Wow, who was the last female artist to hit 800k in first week? There's only ever been three. Britney Spears - Oops! Wow, so the last artist to do more than 800k is Norah Jones back when weekly sales were more than twice as strong as they are now. Taylor can potentially claim the #3, perhaps even the #2 spot. :o

I just wish Carrie would push a crossover as well because I know she'd be doing big things like this along with Taylor. It almost makes me jealous... Carrie did it, and then backed out after Some Hearts........ oh well... Anyway, I'm thinking 1 million is going to happen! I can just feel it, and it would be amazing for someone in the year 2010 to sell 1,000,000 copies in 1 week. Regardless of having the extra day, that would just be amazing. The music industry is on Taylor's shoulders!

The list is missing SuBo, with 700,779 copies for I Dreamed A Dream.

Some believe he'd be the last to ever do it. But this week might change that.

Wow, i think she can beat at least Shania's Up first week sales (and maybe Norah's first week sales, but it's a bit difficult, but who knows?) so she's gonna have at least 3rd best first week sales ever among female artist.

I'm a huge Taylor stan but doesn't HDD usually overestimate predicted sales?
I'd rather this album have longevity rather than a splashy big opening week(but I'd take both of course)

It's gonna be hard for her to reach 1 million I believe. But if she does reach the million mark, I'll be damned.

Even still, a 700k+ debut would be pretty darn sweet as well. Imagine if she'd had a crossover hit that went top 10 on pop (perhaps on the level of "You Belong With Me" or "Love Story"). We'd be looking at one million copies sold first week out easily. That's not a given. lol There are several factors at work here.

Can someone tell me some examples of HDD overestimating and how big was the difference with final sales? 100k? 200k?

But Carrie was having success without the push which is why SH sold 7 million copies. Imagine if there was a crossover push for "Undo It", "Cowboy Casanova", "Last Name", "All-American Girl", and even "Before He Cheats." Sure there was some push, but not like Taylor's. I'm just saying, there is no question in my mind that Carrie would be this big too had she pushed for a crossover. Based on the success of SH with barely any crossover promotion, I'd say Carrie would easily be up there with Taylor. Obviously this unfortunately isn't the case. I'm just imagining, Carrie's had a great career so far....but a fan can wish!

congrats to Taylor!!!! Go girl :) though i wonder, does releasing the album on itunes with all of its tracks purchasable hurt the album's sales because it may discourage people from just buying the album if they like and choose to just buy select tracks. I'm sure this might be negligible but it would be interesting to see.

I'm just imagining, Carrie's had a great career so far....but a fan can wish! Carrie didn't need a lot of "push" for her first album. She was fresh off of winning America's biggest singing competition (which obviously exposed her to a very diverse audience). Point blank, there is no guarantee Carrie would be shifting 800-900k with a successful crossover. It's not that simple. Taylor sells as much as she does, not because she simply crosses over, but because she attracts a wide range of people (it's key that she's able to attract both younger and older audiences) and writes material that people really seem to connect with. It would take a lot more than a crossover hit to bring Carrie to that level (commercially speaking).

It's looking like Carrie will follow in the footsteps of Faith Hill and there would be a HUGE backlash if she crossed over. And it looks like Taylor Swift will follow in the the footsteps of Shania Twain crossing over with minimum backlash. Interesting isnt it? ;)

Please, let's not compare Taylor and Carrie? :) I'm not trying to be rude or anything at all, but those fan wars are pretty tiring. God knows I've been a part of a few of them. Honestly, both are successful and Carrie is already pretty big, so, in the end, she might as well have been as big as Taylor, truth is, we'll never know.
I'm a bit skeptical about the predictions, like, I don't want to hope for too much and be disappointed with something that is amazing but not quite what I expected. So far, I'm expecting Taylor to deliver around that range, and hoping she can cross the million mark, but if she doesn't, that's alright, it's still an impressive amount. Hopefully the word of mouth for this will be amazing, and we've got the whole holiday sales to root for this, as I think this might cross the 3kk mark by the end of this year. Well, that's all I can wish for.

^^ WOW ! Most of us underestimated this girl. If this were released in 1999-2000, this would debut ~ 2.0 million (if the final numbers of 'Speak Now' are 800-900k) adjusting for the nearly 60% decline in sales from that period of time to now.

I hope she does do a million-that would be awesome especially in 2010 and especially when a lot of stars are struggling to hit a million sold after 3 hit singles and constant promo.
Hits has over and underestimated before so it is pointless to try and analyze whether they are doing that now or not. These early numbers are just estimates and they can swing either way. She has a TON of momentum though so I would not expect her to drop significantly.

I think it was the "industry insiders" who were predicting figures ranging from 350k to 700k prior to the release of the album.

Yeah HDD was actually the most accurate prediction for Katy-her label and other music industry people were the ones suggesting she would clear at least 500K first week. I still want to know what was in the water that made them even start to think that.

Japan has 3 female albums with over 2 million and one with 3 Utada - Distance 3,000,000 Ayumi Hamasaki 2,900,000

Actually many artists don't really care about sales, they just want enough to be able to continue making music. I'd say record labels, not artists, wish they had those sales.
