however #1's are still impressive things to achieve exactly...but Rihanna seems to be stuck in a rutt where she cant advacne to the next level even tho she can rack up tons of hits. some artists have different strengths and fulfill different niches in the music industry. Artists like Rihanna, Katy Perry or Kesha don't have to necessarily sell excessive copies of their albums the first week of release because they are able to ensure album longevity since their songs are almost always major hits on radio/itunes. This has a lot to do with the fact that their target audiences are generally younger and are more likely to buy individual tracks off of itunes as opposed to running out and buying the album from a Best Buy or Walmart. These artists emerged and/or are reaching their prime post-itunes and the digital download explosion. Beyonce only had one huge digital hit from IASF but the album received a 2x platinum certification. But she, generally speaking, has a more mature following and many more years in the industry than Rihanna, so, she is more likely to pull in larger first week sales than Rihanna, Katy, or Kesha. Rihanna is a huge 'hit' artist and the way the industry and album sales are heading, this is a strength and not a hindrance to her longevity as an artist. If she's able to earn 6 solo number ones across 4 different albums of hers in 4 years, she's clearly a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

What bothers me is the fact Madonna has SO MANY #2 hits. If her #2 singles were #1's-- she'd had 18 #1 hits, and passing the Beatles with Mariah. You are really bothered by that... She holds many other records and accomplishments so...

The thing about #1s is that they dont define an artist's worth. If Beyonce/Eminem/Celine never get another #1 they still would be better and more sucessful/respected than Rihanna. As far as Im concerned she can beat Mariah's record but she still would have had the impact she did. She has 10 more to go...it's good for someone of our generation to be in reach but why act as if Mariah doesn't have another #1 in her. I think she has enough to get 21. She has the urban/rhythmic audience...if she can pull out pop/hot ac on a record with strong enough sales she has a chance to go to #1 again. Also, Usher has 9...I think he will get there too.

She holds many other records and accomplishments so... And Mariah and the Beatles or Elvis had a some #2's too, so your theory don't work, cause if applied too to those who had more #1's on the Hot100 they'll still be ahead of her.

I think Rihanna can easily surpass Madonna (12 #1s) but surpass Mariah? Let's see.

Beyonce actually has garnered more reverence than Paula Abdul. And some are still getting into the No. 1s discussion? After it's been established many times that it has nothing to do with an act's reverence or acclaim/importance. Yes, I said acclaim. :) Look at the list of acts with the most No. 1 hits and then compare to their performance at acclaimedmusic. A completely different picture in many instances. I don't think Aretha Franklin and The Boss are crying about not having 2 and ZERO No. 1 hits on the Hot 100. Beyonce's grammy's didn't even exist when Paula Abdul was around.

Wonder if "Raise Your Glass" will reach the top 5- very nice showing.
"Airplanes" stands as the current longest-running entry on the Hot 100 (30 weeks).
"Farmer's Daughter" persists on the chart, outside the top 50 and in its 21st week on the chart- it's up to No. 5t on Country Songs.

Yeah but what does that say when people will buy one song from you but dont think your worth the 12 bucks for the whole album? or pay to see you live? Legend after 5 albums? Beyonce has consistently sold over 5 mill with all her solo records- If Rihanna is as great as people on here claim--where are the record sales? the tour sales? Forbes list? Grammys? it doesnt exist

Why is it that every week this thread somehow gets turned into Rihanna vs. Mariah Carey? They are two TOTALLY different artists who make two TOTALLY different types of music and are from two TOTALLY different time periods. Yes, they may have both had amazing chart success, but in my opinion there is no point comparing them as it is never-ending battle. Well, if you'll take note, the only thing anyone compared was their chart success, not their music itself. That's what we do in every chart thread. So-and-so sells so much or gets x position on the chart or does extraordinary chart feat, so we all wonder how that compares to other artists and what the future may hold. Why is that so strange? Rihanna's accomplishments are indeed impressive and it's a complement to her star power and her staying power that people are speculating about whether or not she could take down Mimi for the most #1's. And I think this is only the second thread I can recall that's turned into Mariah vs. Rihanna, at least recently. Except that Mariah doesn't have the most #1's. That record, after 40 years, still belongs to the Beatles. ;)

exactly...but Rihanna seems to be stuck in a rutt where she cant advacne to the next level even tho she can rack up tons of hits. Oooh levels? Really? So first you rack up a certain amount of #1 hits and then you become a huge album seller? Is that how it is supposed to work? No, sometimes like the Beatles, you can do both. Not only do they have the most #1 hits, they also have the most #1 albums. :)

58 62 5 Memories, David Guetta Featuring Kid Cudi "Memories" is such a slow climber. Damn. I hope it breaks the Top 40 or something. It's too good to flop. Hot R&B / Hip-Hop Somgs 1 1 14 Can't Be Friends, Trey Songz 2 2 19 Deuces, Chris Brown Featuring Tyga & Kevin McCall 3 4 13 No Hands, Waka Flocka Flame Featuring Roscoe Dash & Wale 4 5 13 Right Above It, Lil Wayne Featuring Drake 5 7 15 Aston Martin Music, Rick Ross Featuring Drake & Chrisette Michele 17 28 6 Black And Yellow, Wiz Khalifa 64 86 2 Lay With You, El Debarge Featuring Faith Evans 70 NEW 1 Gimmie Dat, Ciara The Top 5 is looking nice. Loving the songs from Wiz Khalifa & Debarge/Faith. It's good see "Gimmie Dat" debut.

Can anyone give me the # of #1 singles total in the 1960's and give the the number of #1's total in the 1990's? Quit trying to change the argument to something else. I don't know what the beatles singles were selling for then or the sales pricing and neither do you so there is no way to really compare that information.

56 NEW 1 Roman's Revenge, Nicki Minaj Featuring Eminem Nice! So that is another hot 100 entry for Nicki...I expect at least three more before year's end. The one with Keyshia cole and two from hers during the album week's debut.

Mariah? Get to 21? Always possible but highly doubtful. If nothing else, her ages works against her, not too many 40 plus year old women having #1 hits these days.

They didn't have to, there was always a high demand for them when they came out. And surely you're not suggesting that if Mariah had been around in the 60's that she would have had as many #1 hits as the Beatles? LOL

52 53 21 Farmer's Daughter, Rodney Atkins Can somebody please explain me why this it's still charting???? I thought the rule was for a song to exit the Hot100 if it had spent more than 20 weeks, and if it was below position 50????

They usually won't send a song recurrent while it's still growing.

Rihanna maybe have been in the business for only 5 years, but she has already released as much music as Britney in her career. I can see her reaching as much #1's as JJ and Madonna but MiMi's record is too far away. agreed...and #1s arent as important anymore #1'S ARE IMPORTANT AND RIHANNA IS KILLING IT RIGHT NOW.
