If she is #1 this week, then congratulations. Honestly Rihanna and her team have been brilliant in marketing this era for her. I like how, instead of trying to bring new life to Rated R with a re release, they moved on to a whole new project. They ¨cleaned¨ her image of all the satanic/illuminati* undertones (not that I believe in any of that in the first place, but the public is gullible) and gave her radio friendly hits. They re introduce her to the public by her feature with Eminem (something Christina should do before her next album, a feature with the hot star of the moment would do her image and marketability good.... at least it did to Rihanna now, and Mariah). GaGa, should really clean her image a little for her next era. *For real, if I were Rihanna, GaGa, Jay-Z, Beyonce, et. al, I would consider suing the crap from that loon @ the vigilantcitizen.com Rihanna is different from Christina though, she didn't really need that much work done, the public was still there when she came back with Loud. Rude Boy was a big hit, and it came from Rated R, so, it sort of showed how the public still liked her... Christina can't score a hit even with a commercial song, so, I'm not sure what she should do to 'get back' to the game.

Rihanna's 'Only Girl' Rebounds to No. 1 on Hot 100
by Silvio Pietroluongo, N.Y. | November 24, 2010 7:30 EST
Two weeks after topping the Billboard Hot 100 with "What's My Name?" (featuring Drake), Rihanna will return to No. 1 on the chart released Thursday (Nov. 25) with "Only Girl (In the World)," the debut single from her new album, "Loud."
It's the first time in Hot 100 history that an album's debut single reaches No. 1 after the second single does. "What's My Name" dips 7-8 on the Hot 100, though it does take the Airplay Gainer for a fourth straight week. "Loud, meanwhile, debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
"Only Girl" is Rihanna's fourth single to ascend to No. 1 in 2010, making her the first female, and first artist overall since Usher in 2004, to hit the top that many times in a single calendar year. Rihanna also moves to the forefront for most No. 1s in the millennium (since 2000), as "Only Girl" is her ninth track to lead the list. She had been tied with Usher for the past two weeks, with eight chart-toppers since 2000.

Rihanna also moves to the forefront for most No. 1s in the millennium (since 2000), as "Only Girl" is her ninth track to lead the list. She had been tied with Usher for the past two weeks, with eight chart-toppers since 2000. The latest "Glee" episode, titled "The Substitute," brings only a pair of titles by the cast onto the Hot 100, each one featuring guest vocals by Gwyneth Paltrow. Coming in at No. 11 as the Hot Shot Debut is the "Glee" Cast's version of Cee Lo Green's "Forget You," while "Singing in the Rain/Umbrella" debuts at No. 18. After topping Digital Songs for the first time last week with its cover of "Teenage Dream," the ensemble goes for back-to back No. 1s, as "Forget You" debuts atop that chart with 192,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Rain/Umbrella" shifts 140,000, while Green's own "F**k You (Forget You)" is lifted into the top 10 of the Hot 100 for the first time, on the wings of the "Glee" Cast cover. The original recording, including its version with decidedly un-"Glee"-like language, is the top Digital Gainer, moving 191,000 (up 94%), a week after its previous best sale frame (98,000). The explicit version makes up 68% of the title's sales for this week. Elsewhere in the Hot 100 top 10, P!nk celebrates the holiday week with a 4-2 lift for "Raise Your Glass," while Far*East Movement seems to have exhausted its No. 1 run, dropping to No. 3 after three non-consecutive weeks. Ke$ha rebounds 6-4 with "We R Who We R," which debuted at No. 1 three weeks ago due to a huge opening week sales frame. Nelly's "Just a Dream" spends an eighth consecutive week in the top five, holding at No. 5. Katy Perry streaks to No. 6 with "Firework," with the track showing a steady upward trajectory in its five weeks on the list (57-29-10-9-6). Bruno Mars dips 3-7 with "Just The Way You Are," while follow-up single "Grenade" explodes 30-17, improving more than 50% in both sales (up 58% to 100,000 downloads) and audience (up 51% to 37.1 million impressions). Rounding out the top 10 is Trey Songz, who holds onto the anchor spot for a second week. Dr. Dre makes his first chart appearance as a lead act in more than 10 years, as "Kush," featuring Snoop Dogg & Akon debuts at No. 48. The song moved 45,000 during a partial week of sales. The last time the rap icon appeared on the list with his own track was when "The Next Episode" peaked at No. 23 in July 2000. Akon also assists another chart legend this week, aiding Michael Jackson on the King of Pop's 48th Hot 100 hit, "Hold My Hand," which debuts at No. 84. Akon also appeared on Jackson's last charting effort, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008," which peaked at No. 81 in February of that year. Jackson's new track sold 19,000 in less than three days of availability as it reached digital retailers on Friday, Nov. 19. www.billboard.com/#/news/rihanna-s-only-girl-rebounds-to-no-1-on-1004130511.story?tag=hpfeed[/b]Congrats Rihanna!

Just sharing something I read a couple of days ago. On a different note, congrats to Rihanna. I hope P!nk gets it next week.

I don't mind "Only Girl"- actually like it more than the second single.
RiRi is setting her sights on snatching those female Hot 100 No. 1s ranks- next up is Janet, then Whitney, then Madonna. And then she will have some time yet to get to Mimi.

Well, yeah, The Supremes had 12 Hot 100 No. 1 hits. It's funny, these acts who watch the charts so closely. Now, I'm sure Madonna was told how her hits were doing back in the 90s (she did talk about having that dream about Billboard in late 1995 lol and spoke about it as if it were ridiculous: "This is what I'm dreaming about!"), but I liked when Bryant Gumble asked her in 1996 if she cared about having more hits than any other female. She's like, "I didn't even know what you just told me; I thought Whitney Houston had passed me or something," and added that she didn't care if any of the other "divas" passed her. She brushed it all off to them just being lists, what do they mean anyway. And, in classic Madonna fashion added, "They can't do what I do." Sometimes I miss that I'm-the-be-all attitude of hers. Today's acts like Lady Gaga and Rihanna obviously are watching the charts intently (almost as much as Mimi perhaps)- Stephanie G. even keeps track of her No. 1s at pop radio.

Yeah, they're "just lists" because she's not the one breaking records in that department. I am sure a different story would be told if that was the case.

I remember when people were saying OG would not go no. 1 with such certainty.
It took awhile, Rihanna even had another no. 1 in between, but it happened. haha

Junkie, at the time, she WAS the leader in whatever hits category Gumble was talking about (top 10s, #1s, etc.), so wouldn't have been a different story in that respect. :)
colson, I think it's safe to say that Madonna enjoyed doing well (duh- she got emotional when Confessions on a Dance Floor came in at No. 1 in the USA), but it's also obvious that the charts were not the priority for Madge as they were for some other acts (and usually only talked about them when someone brought it up). she certainly wouldn't have expressed herself the way she did in her work and taken all those risks if being the most popular girl was top priority for her. She also joked about the charts in 1994, making a comment about how she wanted to be No. 1 when Bedtime Stories debuted at No. 3, then said it was alright because Snoop Dogg's soundtrack was at No. 1. She also joked about that "damn" Bodyguard soundtrack hogging the No. 1 spot (as she was laughing, she was clearly having fun with it).
Anyhow, it's always nice for chart action when someone is racking up the hits at a rapid pace. Good for RiRi. And it's further evidence of the cliche, "Records are made to be broken."

In 1996 both Madge and Mimi had 11 #1 hits (with Mimi coming almost a decade after Madonna's debut). I stand by what I said. Given those girls' rivalries and Mimi's obsessions with the charts, I'm sure Madge just wanted to act like she didn't care to be the "coolest" one of the two.
It's ok if she truly doesn't care about the charts tho. Madonna's ego is HUGE on its own anyways. However, that doesn't take away from the importance of these lists -or Madonna's legendary status-. They are a part of pop culture, and serve as references of what once (or currently) were the most popular songs and acts. It's obvious that someone with the amount of #1s of Mariah, for example, was someone who impacted not only the charts, but music and pop culture as well.
Rihanna is well on her way of becoming a very important pop icon of these times. As Mimi, she's usually very discredited, but her music and chart achievements are signs of her true impact.

#9 is F*ck You / Forget You by Ceelo Green right base on that billboard article
" while Green's own "F**k You (Forget You)" is lifted into the top 10 of the Hot 100 for the first time, on the wings of the "Glee" Cast cover"
Anyway, congrats Rihanna!

Congratulations to Rihanna's marketing team for creating a situation where OG would sell enough copies to finally make it to #1, since it clearly couldn't do it on its own merit.
Chart manipulation lives.
And I'm not even close to pressed so don't even bother. I don't hate Rihanna and my favorite artists OWN the Hot 100 #1 record and have for over 40 years now. I just don't like blatant deck stacking when I see it.

But of course, she thinks herself too big of a star to do that. Huh? She has done multiple guest vocal features like that and said she will continue to do them. Several of them have been released as singles, as well. I don't really follow comparing Christina to Rihanna-I am assuming there is some line of thought that started it, but they are so different and in such different places in their careers that I cannot compare them. Rihanna's marketing team IS brilliant, but every team has to market a song correctly to get a #1. It isn't like they "faked" airplay or were so far away that this could be considered cheating or manufacturing a #1. Only Girl is a huge hit that is getting steady high sales and has massive airplay numbers. It is one of my favorite songs on Loud so congrats to her!

Chart manipulation lives. I'm sorry but I am going to have to call you out on this stupidity. Every song is the subject of chart manipulation. The whole point is to sell records to begin with. The Beatles manipulated the charts in the 1960's to their advantage as other artists do to this very day. Record companies are in the business of selling records and no amount of chart manipulation will make a song #1 or chart at all that people simply have no interest in....take a seat.

I think that Madge interview may have occurred before Mimi reached her 11th with "Always Be My Baby"; but no matter. As we've been discussing wirh the number of "Glee" Hot 100 entries, amounts of hits really don't mean anything more in the big picture. Sure, "Glee" is a big part of pop culture right now, extending beyond music to TV- but no one's going to be proclaiming the cast one of the best or most important musical acts of all time. Sort of how it is for Mimi, in terms of the amount of No., 1 Hot 100 hits she has and how it does not put her at or near the level of other acts with a high number of No. 1 hits (musically, culturally, etc.)- though she's certainly more notable than "Glee" in musical terms, as well as Westlife (who I often use as a comparison in UK purposes, with its 14 Uk No. 1 hits). :)
StreetDate, Madonna is fine with Whitney and respects her. She's actually fine with all the "divas" at this point.
peigan- no chart manipulation with Rihanna. But the marketing team does deserve come credit. Nothing wrong there, as all labels have the opportunity to pull out their best marketing strategies.

*For real, if I were Rihanna, GaGa, Jay-Z, Beyonce, et. al, I would consider suing the crap from that loon @ the vigilantcitizen.com As loony as vigilant citizen is, I don't think any of the above really mind. Jay Z actually plays up to it A LOT. You can't tell me he didn't intentionally put all the direct symbols in the "On To The Next" video for nothing. I guess it depends on the artist because I wouldn't expect all the illuminati rumors hurt Jay or Kanye in any way...for pop stars that could be another thing.
