Is pretty much a given that Firework will be #1 this week.....
.... and I find it particularly interesting (and touching) that the three songs calling for acceptance, inner strength and whatnots all made it to #1. Is really touching that all three songs (WRWWR, RYG and Firework) had the struggles the gay community faces every day in mind.

Exploitative of the current climate while not really sending out a meaningful message, sure. I feel disgusted by the manipulation. It's like what Rich on FourFour said: ""We R Who We R" is a callous response to teen desperation, if it is in fact one at all (and I think we all know that it isn't). You hear about suicides and you think, "We'll be forever young," really? Is she saying that the ultimate in "going hard" is going so hard that you die? I know that young people sometimes equate maudlin with cool, but I seriously doubt that it is those dead gay kids are the ones who are making the hipsters she sings about fall in love. Seriously, what is this woman talking about? Actually I know the answer to that: nothing as usual. Except this time she's pretending like it's something. Ke$ha has no business talking about queer people. She doesn't seem to know the difference between drag queens and transgender people (whom she refers to as "trannies"). In her It Gets Better video, she assures those subjugated because of their sexuality and/or gender identity, "However you are choosing to live is beautiful." In the interest of fairness, I'm willing to concede that perhaps she has no other choice than to be ignorant. However, no matter where it's coming from, the fact is that she is combating ignorance with ignorance. She makes me long for the days when, "I am not a role model," was sufficient. I'll take apathy over exploiting the cause du jour for the sake of marketing any day. That is some cancerous s**t right there. Not that such exploitation is new to pop culture. Obviously, this is how the game works: the best gift a celebrity can give herself is one that appears to be given to others."
Plus the songs themselves are just generic diva songs.

^ I get your point, but one can't be so callous.
If, as you say, a stupid diva's exploitative song CAN bring a change of heart in a young person regarding gay rights, then I'll take that as something good.
PS: These three songs aren't the first, nor they will be the last, to some say ¨exploit¨ others say ¨address¨ the ¨cause celebre¨of the day.

I just wanna say that We R Who We R (and to a less extent Raise Your Glass and Firework) helped me come out to my mom. That might not mean much to anyone, but the song HAS done its purpose, whether it's exploitative or not

I doubt any of these songs were written after the spate of gay bullying, so the idea that they're specifically for this cause doesn't really hold water. Especially when you consider how vague the lyrics are to each song; they could be applied to pretty much anyone who feels put down or not good enough. I don't really know how I feel about these three chicks tying their careers to this band wagon, it feels extremely shady.

Just because it doesn't live up to your standard doesn't mean that we should doubt what the creator is saying about their song. This isn't even the first time bullying has happened to the point where people were killed.

I don't know when they were written but clearly the songs were chosen for the message of acceptance.

It's her stans i can't stand, and they make me not like her. I don't blame Rihanna by any means. Songs like Disturbia and Rude Boy will forever live on my ipod. I'm just impartial to her new stuff. It's a step down for me. WMN > OG for me. I like WTC.

Damn boo. #tellemhowufeel They're all great simple pop records at heart and they all have a positive message which will mean a lot to certain people. Marketing or not, if it's something positive and makes people feel good about themselves that's all that matters.

Why is Edward Maya dropping and why is Pink gaining so slowly? Is it the whole Christmas freeze or is that about all the love they're going to get from radio here?

I had posted that with Thanksgiving day and possibly the day after out of the mix, the gains for holiday tracks could lessen or even decline. Because the 7-day rolling period that includes Thanksgiving day and the day after usually involves robust gains, as that's when radio stations really kick up holiday airplay. So, the new 7-day rolling period that doesn't include those days will have less airplay. Make sense?
That's how it's worked in the past. The big gains then usually come as Christmas gets closer.

kingofpain, the Christmas freeze hasn't really happened, at least at non-mainstream-AC formats. Pop usually plays holiday tracks more in the week-prior and week-of Christmas, whereas many mainstream AC gets right into it in November and then especially once Thanksgiving hits.

It is interesting to hear what the cultural touch stones are for younger gay people today in terms of coming out. In my day it was Ellen. Anyway, that influence is positive but it doesn't automatically mean a song itself is any good musically speaking.
I think my biggest beef with Kesha's song is that it seems really disingenuous to sing about being who you are when she has clearly worked so hard to create an artificial persona. But I guess that fits under "choosing" an identity. Except equating that with being gay is also odd, since that is not a choice like covering yourself with dirt is a choice.
