i personally think Hard Candy had some excellent songs: Give It 2 Me Heartbeat Miles Away She's Not Me Beat Goes On Devil Wouldn't Recognize You Voices i think the album is much stronger than what people give her credit for. I still enjoy it. I'll agree to that Spree, and add Dance Tonight to the list. It's my ultimate fav from Hard Candy.

Lack of promotion never hurt Madonna's album sales before. :) She was almost 50 when the album hit, too, which didn't help in terms of radio play to support the album.
I like the album alright enough, but it's not a favorite.

Madonna: Comic Book HeroMadonna will soon find herself in a whole new material world: the pages of a comic book. The star will have her life story told in 32 pages by Bluewater Productions Inc, the latest celebrity to be part of its semi-regular line of "Female Force" comics, the publisher said on Thursday. "Our goal is to show the little-known events and influences that resulted in Madonna becoming the phenomenon she remains to this day, more than a quarter-century after she burst upon the scene," said Jason Schultz, Bluewater's executive vice president. "A visual medium provides perspective that is not only accessible but more relatable to the average person without losing any of the information involved." The one-shot issue - due out in August for $US3.99 and written by CW Cooke and drawn by Michael Johnson - will look at her life as it transformed from a little-known singer into a multimillion-record-selling entertainer and trendsetter. Lack of promotion never hurt Madonna's album sales before. :) That was at her apex though when MTV was spinning her videos constantly and she got huge radio play. It's 2011 and she has neither of those now so naturally more promotion is required. To the average person who doesn't follow all her movements the Hard Candy era lasted from "4 Minutes" to about a week after the album came out. I liked a few tracks off Hard Candy ("Heartbeat", "Beat Goes On", "Dance 2Night, 4 Minutes) but I haven't listened to it as an album in ages.

But even with the complete lack of any promotion for Hard Candy, and really only off the back of one single (since "Give It 2 Me" wasn't that successful), she still sold 3.6 million worldwide. And then Celebration with another 2 million.
Obviously she would be in a better position with promotion and she should go that route, but I think she's reached a status where she can rely on her name and a single to push a respectable amount.

She definitely reached a point some time ago that without sufficient promotion from her, she could sell a certain level. of course, promotion would not hurt the cause. But at U.S. radio, it's going to be a challenge- she will be 53 soon, after all. It's not out of the realm of possibility that she could score OK airplay without having a younger collaborator on a track, but the odds are against her.

we've heard this argument so many times. It's so tired.
I really do think that if the material is hot as fuck, it will get played regardless of who it is. Madonna is still one of those special artists that radio gives a chance to. If it does superbly well on iTunes right out of the gate, radio will take notice. (ex: Adele)

Yes and also there really is high anticipation for her to come back. And I mean strong . Especially with the long wait for a new album and everything else that is going on with her. I believe she will get a new younger audience with glee and gaga etc. Her first single is going to be everywhere. and she will deliver big. Just her name alone is all that matters these days. Her age doesn't matter anymore. Look at Sade , long wait - great sales.

It seems like all she cares about now is touring (where the money is), and thus all she does is make an album and promote the first single. The first single gets a decent video, decent promotion, and then she says f*ck it to the rest of the era, becuase she knows everyone will come to her concert regardless. We get 2 crappy videos and no promo. I want her to release great videos for at least 3 singles. One or two appearances to promote singles 2 and 3 would also be nice. Does she have to? No... of course not. She can make tons of money from touring for the rest of her life with her extensive back catalogue and promoting the first single from a new album. I just expect more from Madonna. Especially in the video department. I think she knows all of this and will deliver the goods.

It may be "tired," but it's still true. :) Radio still gives a chance to Madge? "Hung Up" was a worldwide smash, and U.S. radio only gave it a No. 42 airplay peak, despite the sales success. And, of course, the follow-up singles fared even worse. Since 2002, just two top 20 peaks on Hot 100 Airplay- and one featured Justin Timberlake.
It would be great if U.S. radio supports a new *solo* Madonna track in decent numbers (cracking at least top 40 on Hot 100 Airplay), but there's no denying U.S. radio ageism (more now than ever before, outside of the one-off possible hits)- no ifs, ands or buts about that.

^SoundScan was not in existence until 1991. Only a handful of albums debuted at No. 1 from the 60s through 1991. The charts were compiled from stores' ranked reports- each title received a set number of points based on their ranks on those lists. So, it may have been that the No. 2 album, No. 3 album, etc. actually sold more units in a week than the No. 1 album. The airplay chart was compiled in a similar manner (ranked reports from radio stations).
