I feel as though Katy Perry is the new Cyndi Lauper, not GaGa. I wouldn't be so sure about that. I think Katy avoided getting trapped in the same situation that Cyndi found herself with by following up her debut faster and bigger (although this doesn't really take into account that Cyndi was much bigger during her first album than Katy with hers).

Lady Gaga announces release date for new album 'Born This Way' Follow-up to 'The Fame Monster' will be released on May 23 January 1, 2011 | Lady Gaga has announced the release date for her new album 'Born This Way'. The singer made the announcement via her official Twitter page, Twitter.com/ladygaga, writing that the record will be released on May 23 and that the album's title track will be made available on February 13. She also posted a picture of herself sporting a leather jacket with the album's title written on the back. February 13 is also the date for the 2011 Grammy Awards. Lady Gaga is nominated for six awards, with the release date leading to speculation that she will perform the song at the ceremony. 'Born This Way' is the follow-up to 2009's 'The Fame Monster', which was the biggest-selling album in the world in 2010, shifting over 5.8million copies. www.nme.com/news/lady-gaga/54408

I hope it sounds better than it did when she sang the snippet on the VMAs. I want a classic Gaga song for the first single. Though I guess I can't judge it on a small live snippet...

I don't know if her saying "The Song" actually meant Born This Way as it could have meant the song as in the single but I can't wait!

Smart to release the album that late. BTW sounds like a ballad so in the case that it isn't received well or flops, she has more than enough time to fix things.

I'm confused: so the first single is actually called 'Born This Way'? And it will be a ballad?

Judging by the way she tweeted that picture, it would seem that Born This Way is both the name of the album and lead single.
I hope it is a ballad - we are completely devoid of ballads in pop music right now and if there's anyone to get one to hit, it's probably GaGa.

The person above you was just judging it from the live clip.. I doubt it'll be a ballad. The first time Bad Romance was performed, it was turned into a ballad too. I hope it's not.. especially for a lead single...

Ballad's are never good choices to lead eras off, even for big name artists (see RIhanna), not to mention Gaga's ballads are some of her weakest material. I can deal with a slow electro-jam, but dnw anything "deep" to kick the era off.

Holy sh*t at that performance. :o (post-"LoveGame" obv) That was amazing. You can tell the retro/jazz style is really where her heart's at.

The first single has to be a song that sets the mood, an uptempo, fun, catchy the song that makes people notice the artist again and be interested in buying her music. Roare also has a point: if Gaga releases a ballad as a first single, she may pull it off, but I wouldn't like that.

I'd take them any day over all that electro-pop i$h that gets annoying after not too many spins. All her songs sound better when she transforms them into ballads live imo. I do agree that from a commercial standpoint, it's not wise to start the era off that way though.

All her songs sound better when she transforms them into ballads live imo. It really depends. Live, her ballads sound fantastic because I can really feel the energy, but she never translates them well on-record (Disregarding Speechless, which was terrible live too.) In contrast, her pop records have far more flare and pizazz as we'd expect from Gaga. P.S. Plz keep the Ke$ha shade to a minimum, ty.

At the same time though, she can't release another typical RedOne dance track, because then people would be complaining she didn't 'progress' at all.

It's a weird situation, but I think she'd be fine continuing with the dance trend (just not RedOne). If she pulls something like Bad Romance that sounds a bit different, she'll be okay. Fact: she hasn't put out anything new in over a year, so come February, people will eat up just about anything she puts out. I do agree that the second/third single from the era should probably be a ballad, or at least a little on the slow side.

Sure it's the same producer, but the work they produce together can be better than last time. However, it will be difficult to top BR imo, but it's not impossible. Kpasa: I agree, she's been out of the pop scene as far as CHR radio is concerned for a few months, so the new single will sure smash or at least have a great start.

Impossible was the only success thing to come out from Shontelle's No Gravity era. Licky did nothing, perfect nightmare, stalled early, and albums sales suck.

I'm not saying she can't work with RedOne, but if this song is Poker Face/Bad Romance Pt. II, people might be disappointed, especially since she's been painting this era as ~something amazing~ for like a year now.
