Just getting a head start -- the HITS numbers this week also serve as the YTD chart for 2011 This time last year, January was off to a strong start with Ke$ha's Animal set to debut at 151k. Not so this year as Taylor Swift may add an unwanted footnote to her career by setting a record for the lowest total ever for a #1 album. Currently the Dreamgirls soundtrack holds that undistinguished title with sales of 60k for the week ending 1/14/07. Should Swift not exceed next week's projected range, that title would then belong to her. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend: Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 55-60k Nicki Minaj (YM/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 40-45k Daft Punk Tron: Legacy (Walt Disney) 35-40k Lady Antebellum Merry Little Christmas (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 35-40k Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/IDJ) 35-40k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 35-40k Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 30-35k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 30-35k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 30-35k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 27-30k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k R. Kelly (Jive/JLG) 24-27k Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 21-24k Lady Antebellum Need You Now (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 21-24k Kid Rock (Atlantic) 21-24k T.I. (Grand Hustle/Atlantic) 21-24k ** No debuts this week (1/6p)

Just getting a head start -- the HITS numbers this week also serve as the YTD chart for 2011 I see you're not about to let me beat you to another post. ;) I wonder how long Speak Now will hold on as 2011's biggest seller. Do you think it could go all the way, like Fearless did in 2009?

Do you think it could go all the way, like Fearless did in 2009? Well, unless one of the singles does well I don't think it will. Fearless had LS, You Belong With Me as the main singles that were huge and then it had several minor singles like Fifteen or the Country-only singles to help sales. So far, it seems like Back to December is doing OK but she could really use a bigger hit.

Plus other competition may come from Evanescence, Kelly, Leona, Adele, Jojo, R.E.M, The Script and others. Unless it has two huge singles. Its best bet is a re-release near chirstmas time.

Hope I'm not treading on 2m's toes here, but as he does not appear to be updating, there's a thread on UKMix that follows the Year To Date sales. Here's a link for those who have not already found it... www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=78284&start=0

Adele is killing it. "21" is at 1.5 million already in the UK alone - twice the US tally - and keeping up an incredible sales pace of around 150k a week.

Bruno Mars' YTD sales are pretty much the same in the US and in the UK although it was released in the UK later, earlier this year.
R. Kelly has surprised me with Love Letter.... Gold level already!

09 - 311,000 - SPEAK NOW - Taylor Swift she really isn't holding up very well.. I know its no surprise with the way her singles have been performing, but late last year we all predicted her to blitz the competition. Now it doesn't look like she will surpass Lady A's sales let alone Eminem's.

It also came out about a month earlier in the UK, which is part of why its sales are higher there (although she does seem more popular there regardless).

I see you're not about to let me beat you to another post. ;) I wonder how long Speak Now will hold on as 2011's biggest seller. Do you think it could go all the way, like Fearless did in 2009? That will be a really hard job. Gaga, Brit, Bey & Avril seem to all be releasing this year. Plus other competition may come from Evanescence, Kelly, Leona, Adele, Jojo, R.E.M, The Script and others. Unless it has two huge singles. Its best bet is a re-release near chirstmas time.

BILLBOARD YEAR WEEK 30 7 months down, 5 to go on the "Billboard" year! The "Billboard" year began with the chart dated 4th December 2010 and will finish with the chart dated 26th November 2011. Billboard only count sales whilst the album is in the weekly top 200. Key: Rank - Wks On Chart - Sales 000's - TITLE - Artist 001 - 16 - 2,208 - 21 - Adele 002 - 30 - 1,891 - SPEAK NOW - Taylor Swift 003 - 09 - 1,634 - THE GIFT - Susan Boyle 004 - 29 - 1,419 - PINK FRIDAY - Nicki Minaj 005 - 03 - 1,383 - BORN THIS WAY - Lady GaGa 006 - 30 - 1,312 - LOUD - Rihanna 011 - 30 - 957 - TEENAGE DREAM - Katy Perry 012 - 30 - 945 - DOO-WOPS AND HOOLIGANS -
Looks like the top 5 will be all females...Hopefully Katy will hit top 10 and Gaga will be #3 with Nicki #4 (top and only rap female)

Chart Watch Extra: Top 10 Albums at Mid-Year Posted Thu Jun 30, 2011 5:11pm PDT by Paul Grein in Chart Watch Share retweet How slow were album sales in the first half of 2011? Only two albums have sold 1 million copies so far this year, and one of those famously had a little help from a near-giveaway promotion. The paucity of hits makes Adele's achievement all the more remarkable. Her sophomore album, 21, has sold 2,425,000 copies, which would be considered a solid total in any sales climate..
Three of the five best-selling albums so far this year never reached #1 on The Billboard 200, which shows that topping the charts isn't everything. Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More and Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party both peaked at #2. Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans peaked at #3..
Three tracks appear on two albums each in the mid-year top 10. Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are," Chris Brown's "Yeah 3X" and Rihanna's "Only Girl (In The World)" all appear on Now 37, as well as those artists' studio albums. "Just The Way You Are" and "Only Girl (In The World)" both won Grammys in February, for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Dance Recording, respectively..
Gwyneth Paltrow did surprisingly well in the first half of the year. She performs three songs on Glee: The Music, Season Two: Volume 5, which is the best-selling soundtrack so far this year, and four songs on Country Strong, which is the best-selling soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie..
Technically, the first half of Nielsen SoundScan's tracking year doesn't end until Sunday night July 3. Those charts will be published on July 6. But the tallies won't change much. Figure that Adele will add about 90K to her total. Other albums in this report that will add significantly to their totals include Jackie Evancho's Dream With Me (about 50K), Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party (about 40K) and Lady Gaga's Born This Way (about 35K)..
Here are the top 10 albums so far this year, with selected other title holders..
1. Adele, 21, 2,425,000. This is the best-selling album so far this year. It's also the best-selling pop album; the best-selling album by a female artist; and the best-selling album by a British artist. The album debuted at #1 the week ending Feb. 27..
2. Lady Gaga, Born This Way, 1,502,000. This is the best-selling album so far this year by an American artist. The album debuted at #1 the week ending May 29. It was her first #1..
3. Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More, 962,000. This is the best-selling album by a duo or group so far this year. It's also the best-selling album so far this year that was released in a prior year. The album got a big boost from the group's performance with Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers on the Grammys. The album sold an additional 626,000 copies in 2010..
4. Jason Aldean, My Kinda Party, 715,000. This is the best-selling country album so far this year. It's also the best-selling album by a male solo artist. Kelly Clarkson is featured on "Don't You Wanna Stay." The album sold an additional 687,000 copies in 2010..

Chart Watch Extra: Top 20 Songs At Mid-Year Posted Thu Jun 30, 2011 6:39pm PDT by Paul Grein in Chart Watch Share retweet The fourth single from a 2010 album is the best-selling hit at the midway point in 2011. Katy Perry's "E.T." (featuring Kanye West) has sold 4,029,000 copies since the beginning of the year, more even than Adele's monster hit "Rolling In The Deep" (3,937,000)..
In a cover story on Perry in the current issue of Rolling Stone, Erik Hedegaard reports that Perry's record company pushed for the super-catchy "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" to be released as the fourth single from Teenage Dream. But Perry wanted the moody, spacey "E.T." to come out first, even though it isn't as obviously commercial. Perry's stubborn faith in the song was rewarded when "E.T." set a record for the most radio spins in a single week. .
Perry has a second song in the mid-year top 10. "Firework" ranks #10. It would have placed even higher but its sales were split between two years. It was the #28 seller of 2010..
Bruno Mars, Pitbull and newcomer Skylar Grey each have two songs in the mid-year top 20. Mars is represented with "Grenade" at #9 and "The Lazy Song" at #16. Pitbull is featured on Jennifer Lopez's "On The Floor" at #6 and has his own "Give Me Anything" at #14. Grey is featured on Dr. Dre's "I Need A Doctor" at #13 and Diddy-Dirty Money's "Coming Home" at #20..
Technically, the first half of Nielsen SoundScan's tracking year doesn't end until Sunday night July 3. Those charts will be published on July 6. But the tallies won't change much. "Rolling In The Deep," which sold 170K copies this week, will edge closer to "E.T." (which sold 105K this week), but it probably won't be quite enough to close the gap..
Here's the low-down on the 20 best-selling songs so far in 2011..
1. Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, "E.T.," 4,029,000. Perry co-wrote this song, which topped the Hot 100 for five weeks in April and May. It was her fifth #1. The song sold an additional 131K copies in 2010..
2. Adele, "Rolling In The Deep," 3,937,000. Adele co-wrote this song, which topped the Hot 100 for seven weeks, starting in May. It's her first #1. The classy smash is the front-runner to win Grammys for Record and Song of the Year. The song sold an additional 108K copies in 2010..
3. Cee Lo Green, "F**k You (Forget You)," 3,184,000. Cee-Lo co-wrote this rule-breaking smash, which peaked at #2 and won a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. It was his best showing since Gnarls Barkley's 2006 smash "Crazy," which also peaked at #2. "F**k You" sold an additional 1,688,000 copies in 2010. It was that year's #46 song..
4. Lady Gaga, "Born This Way," 2,994,000. Gaga co-wrote and co-produced gay-friendly anthem, which topped the Hot 100 for six weeks from February into April. It was her third (and longest-running) #1 hit..
5. Rihanna, "S&M," 2,700,000. This frisky song hit #1 in April, thanks to an assist from Britney Spears. It was Rihanna's 10th song to reach #1 (and her third in a row). The song sold an additional 107K copies in 2010..
6. Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull, "On The Floor," 2,593,000. J.Lo's comeback smash reached #3, her best showing since "All I Have" (featuring LL Cool J) topped the chart in 2003. Pitbull co-wrote the global dance smash, which Lopez promoted on American Idol..
