I know this is weird, but I don't think it's any less Alternative than Cee-Lo Green

I do, because Cee-Lo's previous work with Gnarls Barkley is really alt-leaning.

The song is decent, and she has a great voice. This shouldn't be on Alt, IMO, though. It's doing well on pop, too.

In order for alternative radio to stay relevant as more than just a niche, it needs to have a handful of songs in rotation that the average radio listener recognizes so that the pop listener might keep them as pre-set #5 rather than ignoring the station altogether. And if Neon Trees is alternative enough to have a #1, this is alternative enough to make a sizable dent in the chart. If this were a band with a male-fronted singer (with a very high voice), this song would easily be considered alternative. The anti-solo artist bias and anti-female biases that exist in rock radio are the only things that makes this not alternative, but also help its singer/songwriter cred at AAA and Hot AC.

I would have placed this girl alongside Amy Winehouse & Duffy before her latest album. I think Alt. is becoming a "non-rock" chart with choices like this.

Well the format is called "Alternative" and not "Rock".

I mean this song is the epitome of AAA, but AAA has alternative as one of its elements. And I'd say she fits pretty well alongside the current crop of alternative acts. Also, if Fiona Apple was an alternative artist, then I'd say Adele isn't too much of a stretch.

If a song isn't pop/mainstream, guess what? It's alternative. Alternative is a blanket term, alternative music isn't just rock.

Alternative is a blanket term, alternative music isn't just rock. ??? Ok, so, what happened to styles such Blues, Folk & Soul? (I could mention about a dozen other styles, too) This girl is more of hybrid of those three, than Alternative. Also, if you look at her influences, the majority are from the 60's and beyond (Etta James, Dusty Springfield) Someone with her type of voice could have easily appeared back then, and I don't think they'd be calling her "Alternative" in the 60's. She has a really good old timey voice. It's good to see Pop embrace a singer such as her, however, I don't think this should be on Alt. As for the chart, you seem to be forgetting that Billboard formerly called this chart "Modern Rock". I would still call it an Alt-rock chart, but it's starting to drift.

But this isn't the 60s. What was mainstream then is not mainstream now.

Doesn't stop this from not being Alternative. I've heard people in the pop forum call this a "gospel ballad". I think it's more of a modern-soul tune than anything. I'm sure some people agree with me.

And modern soul is not mainstream in the US.

Yeah, I think it's Alternative stations trying to attract pop listeners that are turned off by the uber-dance lean of the pop format - and apparently, it's working, since a lot of the stations playing this have shot up in ratings over the past few months

I remember when they did it with the Katy Perry song. I guess they did it with Cee Lo Green, too. I just find it irritating when this happens.

Adele definitely isn't pop though - she's AAA, and there's a pretty solid link between those two formats - honestly, I think if this song were credited to a band instead of a solo female artist, this wouldn't even be an issue This is essentially the same genre as Fitz & The Tantrums, and no one thought that sounded out of place on Alternative radio

OMG, I love how the alternative chart is changing. Its like the 90s again when females were able to go Top 20 amongst so many males. I got so happy when I saw this in the Top 20 and the Three Days Grace new single flopping.

Also, Alternative is changing for the worse. I want it to go back to 2005.

I think alternative is changing for better in some ways. It's taste in obscure indie bands has gotten a lot better. I'll take The Naked & Famous over Interpol any day.
I just wish its taste in active rock would improve. More Sevendust, Fair To Midland, Hurt, 10 Years, etc....less __________ (you can guess which bands I'm hinting at).

Also, Alternative is changing for the worse. I want it to go back to 2005. I kind of feel like there wasn't an Alternative format in 2005 - just former Alt. stations that evolved into Active Rock
