Paula's 4-year hiatus while still early in her career in the 90's killed it more than anything. Same happened with Ashanti. At least JLO stayed visible somewhat and was able to grasp a major lifeline while still marketable.

I love Rihanna to death, but if she stayed gone for 4 years right now things would be very different for her when she returned. Only few female artists could pull this off.

Christina's 4 year hiatus also killed her career (so far). Avril after 3 years isn't exactly setting the charts on fire.

Only Britney was able to have a 3-4 year hiatus and then somewhat have success (with Blackout).... but mostly because she stayed constantly on the public mind with all the tabloids, etc.

That's why now that they are hot (GaGa, Perry, Kesha) they should strike it, and release constantly until they want to retire or they flop.

Avril evolved in an interesting way...I knew after her first album that she would be in those dresses Now she makes good pop music but I wonder what she is trying to do now where her first two records I had a vision.

She released Stripped late 2002 and promoted it until 2004...did a soundtrack and lame features with Nelly and Diddy and then released B2B in 06...a GH in 08 and Bionic in 10'

Am I the only one seeing that her attitude and also the fact that she reinvented herself too much had a major effect? You can't reinvent yourself so much that it's contrived and you lose your audience.
It should be more natural...Even if People like Cher, Gaga, Rihanna and Madonna's reinventions came across somewhat contrived they had the charm and personality to pull it off. People like Janet, Gwen, Missy, Usher, MJ, Pink, Britney, Beyonce, Eminem, Mariah, evolved a little more naturally and kept with the sign of the times to have their signature on it. I guess it depends on the type of artist you are.

Yeah, getting Justin on a feature is going to do wonders...people need to give him more credit. I think he is a d-bag but I still give him credit where it is due.

Can't wait for his new album so I can add another album from that dbag to my collection. He makes great music what can I say... ;)

True, and though "Winner" is, thus far, the highest peaking single (on the Hot 100) from Jamie's new album, thanks to downloads from it's debut week, it flopped on every format and didn't make it high on the airplay chart. "Fall For Your Type" was an R&B #1 and urban #1 and a bigger airplay hit than "Winner".

So I'd disagree in saying JT magically saves everyone.

yeah she released a GH in 08, but all it did was have one single and a moderate one at that. so her break is often viewed as 4 years. unlike pink whos had a GH and two massive singlels people wont say she was on break

Aguilera really isn't regarded as a great artist/entertainer, though (vocalist, another story), so that makes her "reinventions" somewhat uneventful. Other acts may not be regarded the highest as artists, either, but they're reliable in what fans can expect from them, so that gives them continued support (i.e. Britney Spears, Mimi Carey, Celine Dion, etc.) Her attitude indeed may be a turn-off; she's not as good (artist-wise) as she'd like to think she is.

And, what's happened, is that someone like Stephanie G. is more effective in post-Madonna provocation (and has been making stronger music, to boot).

BTW- No. 24 is missing from that digital list- not that we can't guesstimate sales at around 72K. :)

Sad, because I've always regarded Christina as the most talented of the crop that emerged at the end of the last millennium. She's definitely one of the greatest and most versatile voices in Pop.

I disagree in terms of S&M. That will have long declined in sales by April unless she performs it on like American Idol or something. Rihanna doesn't have the Urban support behind S&M like she's had with most her other singles to push her up the Hot 100 airplay chart.
Same with ET...not as much but it definitely will have. It has to be timed right.

I think it's gonna do it. It's popularity bars are still really high and there's really no new songs released this week (except Glee tracks) but I don't see Glee topping it over JLo.

Great numbers for J-Lo! and solid for Britney after only a few days. I assume if she stays Top 3/2/1 for the rest of the sales week she can get upwards of 200,000! Would be interesting for her to actually see a sales increase for her second week - not common for her at all!
