4. RIHANNA - S&M: 105.341 (+ 2.503) She is truly the queen of radio. Beyonce might have something to say about that. Their Hot 100 Airplay stats are both impressive, though. Katy Perry has become quite the radio staple this era as well and Lady GaGa is getting there. Those other ladies have been impressive but Rihanna has been dominant. Rihanna has occupied the top 2 spots on the airplay list at the same time.

I still don't understand why they would pull the Kanye version. What could the rationale possibly be? This is really selling a lot, let's make it unavailable? Hm.... its back now on iTunes, so it was a glitch. both versions are top 20 now for the first time. maybe a sales tactic and her label are geniuses?

I think Perry and GaGa's topping is much more impressive, considering neither ladies have the Urban, which is a huge format and has contributed to much of her #1 success on this chart, support behind their songs that Rihanna has.

Rihanna's about to reach her 8th pop #1; clearly her radio success is not reliant on the urban format which has only notably supported a small handful of her songs.
And since when does appealing to a more diverse audience become a negative attribute? Ultimately the goal with every artist or product is to do such. The most impressive feat, on the Hot 100 Airplay Chart, is to come out with the biggest numbers - inarguable.

If her songs were just on pop...how well would they chart. And since when does appealing to a more diverse audience become a negative attribute? Ultimately the goal with every artist or product is to do such. The most impressive feat, on the Hot 100 Airplay Chart, is to come out with the biggest numbers - inarguable. >>Well, when was the last time you heard Gaga and Katy played heavily on urban radio. The same argument holds when it is beyonce doing well with multi format success. When Gaga can outsell beyonce when she doesn't have urban support and when Katy can score bigger hits with more longevity when rihanna has urban support is quite impressive to many. They are all doing amazing but it does seem impressive for those with a smaller audience to do just as good as their competitors. The same with Adele...she sells more than some of those pop stars that endure media saturation. Some see Adele's success as amazing considering she is not on the level of some of her competition.

^ I didn't see anybody say it was "her fault."
They just said she has a larger audience potential because she CAN get Urban airplay, which is true. They also said that it's impressive that people with less airplay audience can sell as well as (or better) than Rihanna, which is true.
I think a better example of this would be Carrie Underwood, who has had three multi-platinum albums without really getting radio airplay outside of country radio (main exception was "Before He Cheats"). Adele is another great example of somebody who sells well without tons of media exposure.
It is impressive how well these artists sell without being shoved down peoples throats by the media... people like Rihanna wouldn't sell without that exposure.

Lets not forget Rhythmic as well.
Katy & GaGa don't get as much support there, (especially GaGa) .
But on the Flip Side rihanna doesn't get support on AC & Hot AC
Katy - Pop/CHR, AC, HOT AC & Decent amounts of Rhythmic RiRi - Pop/CHR, Rhythmic & Urban on some singles GaGa - Pop/CHR, Decent support on AC/Hot AC & Partial Rhythmic Support.

The fact that Rihanna gets more airplay does make her the current queen of radio, and the fact that she can be played on Top 40, Rhythmic, Urban, and Hot AC simultaneously only bolsters this fact not detracts from it like some are trying to do.

The fact that Rihanna gets more airplay does make her the current queen of radio that's the keyword previously missing. It seems her fans forget with her last album Russian Roulette was a disappointment at radio, Hard struggled for airplay, and and we wont even comment on Rock Star 101 last year. So yea, she can have the title for NOW, but the real title goes to whoever can dominate radio album after album. And with that dismal song California King Bed going out next, her reign will end. Then again, when CKB flops they may try to push one more but they will be dumb and not go with Cheers, the only hit left on the album. just like they were dumb and picked Rock Star 101 over Firebomb or Photographs.

I really hope Katy get's number 1 next week. But I won't hold my breath! She will. The tricky tactic her label used seems to be paying off as both versions of E.T. are top 15 on itunes now. Her sales will be greater than last week, as will her airplay.

I don't believe that statement, and there is no data to support such a view, but we will never know since she does have media exposure.

MC is the queen, it's usless to deny that.

Oh good. We're fighting over who's a princess and who's a queen. Why does anyone care about this kind of stuff? Unless one of these singers is in line for the British monarchy there's no point in this.
Anyone have any actual chart updates or commentary relevant to the Hot 100?

Exactly. S&M had a much talked about video + the fact that she's coming from two hits which automatically makes people/radio interested in the follow-up. Without all the media exposure I do believe she'd be back to the kind of success she had with her first album.
