Britney Spears Snares Sixth No. 1 on Billboard 200 with 'Femme Fatale'

Britney Spears flies in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with her sixth chart-topping album, "Femme Fatale," selling 276,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. The feat ties her for the third-most No. 1s among women with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. Only Barbra Streisand (nine No. 1s) and Madonna (seven) have earned more No. 1s.

Spears has hit the top with six out of her seven studio albums, only missing with 2007's "Blackout," which debuted and peaked at No. 2 (290,000).

Her last effort, 2008's "Circus," started more robustly than "Femme Fatale," as it launched at No. 1 with 506,000 following its Dec. 2 release. "Femme Fatale's" debut of 276,000 is Spears' second-lowest sales start with a studio set -- only her 1999 debut effort, "Baby One More Time," began with a smaller figure (121,000 at No. 1).

Though, one could conclude that "Circus" was a more highly-anticipated album, in that it was seen as a "comeback" after a number of years where Spears' personal and professional life was in chaotic high-gear. "Circus" was ushered in by the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single "Womanizer" -- complete with a return-to-sexy-form music video.

"Femme Fatale," however, isn't a comeback album. There's nothing to come back from, aside from great success. Spears sold 1.7 million of "Circus" in the U.S., snared three top 20 Hot 100 singles from the set, and mounted a blockbuster global tour.

While "Femme Fatale's" first single, "Hold It Against Me," debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, it quickly peaked at No. 3 on the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart -- Spears' home turf format on the airwaves. This week, it falls 19-26 in its 12th week on the list. The album's second single, "Till the World Ends," earns a bullet at No. 14 on the list, but stands still in its fourth week. To compare, "Womanizer" had climbed to No. 5 with a bullet when "Circus" debuted on the Billboard 200 -- and it reached No. 1 two weeks later.

Also worth noting is that "Femme Fatale" is Spears' first album to see a spring release in over a decade. While her first set dropped in January of 1999 and her second offering, 2000's "Oops! ... I Did It Again," came out in May of 2000, the rest of her catalog (even her hits packages and remix sets) were issued during the always-busy shopping period of November-December.

And, not like anyone needs to be reminded -- but album sales just aren't what they used to be. Even if it's been less than two-and-a-half years since "Circus."

Finally, perhaps Spears' tepidly-received "Good Morning America" performance on "Femme Fatale's" street date (March 29) put a damper on the set's first-week festivities. The social buzz ranged from critiques on her tentative dancing to commentary about her unusually husky voice. She also hit the stage the same night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to moderately better notices.

Spears isn't the only big news on the Billboard 200 this week however, as Wiz Khalifa comes in at No. 2 with his major label debut, "Rolling Papers," selling 197,000. He's already topped the Billboard Hot 100 with "Black and Yellow" and bowed in the top 10 last week with "No Sleep."

Adele's "21" holds at No. 3 (94,000; down 2%), Chris Brown's "F.A.M.E." slides 1-4 (91,000; down 66%) and the "Songs For Japan" charity compilation posts an increase in sales after its first full week in release, climbing 6-5 (71,000; up 5%).

The mainstream release of Radiohead's "The King of Limbs" enables the album's bow at No. 6 (69,000) while Jennifer Hudson's "I Remember Me" slips 2-7 (56,000; down 66%). Snoop Dogg's "Doggumentary" arrives at No. 8 (50,000) -- the hip-hop king's 11th top 10 -- while Kirk Franklin's "Hello Fear" slides 5-9 (46,000; down 47%). Closing out the top 10 is gospel duo Mary Mary with "Something Big" starting with 42,000 at No. 10, the third top 10 effort for the act.

Switching gears to the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry's "E.T." holds at No. 1, selling another 327,000 downloads (up 29%), following the premiere of its out-of-this-world music video last week. The Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough" moves up 3-2 (203,000; down 7%), Rihanna's "S&M" is also up one, 4-3 (159,000; down 4%).

Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" (featuring Pitbull) rises 7-4 (138,000; down 4%), Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now" (featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes) climbs 8-5 (137,000; down 4%) and Khalifa's "No Sleep" slides 2-6 (135,000; down 45%). Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" drops 5-7 (134,000; down 14%), Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" descends 6-8 (129,000; down 12%) and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" rises 11-9 (122,000; up 16%). Finally, at No. 10, we find the fast-rising "John" from Lil Wayne, shifting 116,000 (up 134%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending April 3) totaled 6.62 million units, up 2% compared to the sum last week (6.48 million) and down 3% compared to the comparable sales week of 2010 (6.84 million). Year to date album sales stand at 77.82 million, down 5% compared to the same total at this point last year (81.96 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.52 million downloads, down 1% compared to last week (24.78 million) and up 8% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (22.68 million). Year to date track sales are at 339.12 million, up 9% compared to the same total at this point last year (312.38 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" returned to the No. 1 slot with 102,000 (down 65%) and Usher's "Raymond v Raymond" fell from the penthouse to No. 2 (92,000; down 72%). Slash's self-titled album was the top debut, arriving in third place with 60,000.

Of note: the streak in year-to-year sales did not continue, but only dropped 3% compared to a year ago. If Spears' album (or any of the other debuts) had opened to larger numbers, perhaps the streak would have continued.

Make it an even half dozen. With the chart-topping bow next week of Femme Fatale, Britney Spears will notch her sixth Billboard 200 #1 debut thanks to first-week sales of 276,000 for the pop diva's seventh studio collection.

Though it's nearly half the 505,000 in sales the singer put up with 2008's Circus, the debut easily outpaces the week's #2 showing by Wiz Khalifa, whose Rolling Papers moved 197,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

Among the other debuts in the top 10 are the physical release of Radiohead's latest, King of Limbs (#6, 69,000), Snoop Dogg's Doggumentary (#8, 50,000) and Mary Mary's Something Big, which rounds out the new titles at #10 on sales of 42,000.

The rest of the top 10: Adele, 21 (#3, 94,000), Chris Brown, F.A.M.E. (#4, 91,000, down 66 percent), Songs for Japan (#5, 71,000), Jennifer Hudson, I Remember Me (#7, down 66 percent) and Kirk Franklin, Hello Fear (#9, 46,000).

After debuting at #4 last week, the Strokes take a bit of a dive down to #18, as sales of Angles leveled off by 76 percent to 21,000. The hard-charging soundtrack to the critically panned fantasy film "Sucker Punch" actually rises nine spots in its second week to #22 on sales of 20,000.

The soundtrack to the "Grey's Anatomy: The Musical Event" episode comes in at #24 (19,000), while Sum 41's Screaming Bloody Murder inches on to the charts at #31 (15,000) and Panic! at the Disco plunge 25 places in week two to #32 with Vices & Virtues (15,000).

A number of indie darlings also make their chart debuts, including the Mountain Goats with All Eternals Deck (#71, 9,000), the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Belong (#91, 6,000) and Peter Bjorn and John, Gimme Some (#108, 6,000).

Britney also tops the iTunes albums chart, edging out the Songs for Japan compilation, followed by Khalifa, Adele, the "Grey's Anatomy" album, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More and albums by Brown, Radiohead, the self-titled effort from Sara Ramirez and the "Sucker Punch" soundtrack.

Black Eyed Peas rule the iTunes singles chart with "Just Can't Get Enough," winning out over Katy Perry's "E.T.," Rihanna's "S&M," Perry's "E.T." without Kanye West, then Khalifa's "No Sleep," Brown's "Look at Me Now," Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor," Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Cee Lo Green's "Forget You" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."

The Sum 41 result is particularly striking as they've only sold a third of what their last album did! I bet they won't be on Island for much longer.

Britney Spears this week becomes the first female solo artist in the history of Billboard's pop album chart to amass six #1 albums before her 30th birthday. Spears, 29, achieves the feat with her new album, Femme Fatale, which enters the chart at #1. Until this week, Mariah Carey was the youngest female solo artist to gather six #1 albums. She was 38 when she picked up her sixth #1 album, E=MC2, in 2008.

Only two male solo artists have notched six #1 albums before turning 30. Elvis Presley nabbed his sixth #1 album (1961's Something For Everybody) when he was just 26. Elton John landed his sixth (1975's Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy) when he was 28.

Only four other female solo artists have amassed six or more #1 albums (no matter their age). Barbra Streisand leads the pack with nine, followed by Madonna with seven and Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson with six each.

Femme Fatale sold 276,000 copies in its first week, which is the second biggest one-week total so far in 2011. Only Adele's 21 sold more copies in one week (352,000). That said, this is the thinnest first-week total for a Spears studio album since her debut album, ....Baby One More Time, sold 121K in its first week in January 1999.

Femme Fatale (great title) sold far fewer copies in its first week than Spears' last album, Circus, which sold 505K copies in December 2008. But it sold nearly as many digital copies (113K for this album, compared to 118K for Circus), which means digital sales accounted for a much higher percentage this time out.

Five songs from Femme Fatale are listed on Hot Digital Songs, but "Hold It Against Me" isn't among them. How can that be? (The smash, which reached #1 on both the Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs, was #66 on the digital chart last week.) It's the impact of returns due to customers' "Complete My Album" option. Enough fans took advantage of that clever gimmick that the song showed negative sales this week. (Whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise.)

Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers debuts at #2, with first-week sales of 197,000. This is the first time that two albums have debuted with sales north of 190K in the same week since Kanye West and Nicki Minaj scored in November. Wiz Khalifa's song "Black And Yellow" tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week, but that was no guarantee that the album would sell well. There are dozens of examples of artists with giant singles whose albums sold modestly. You really just never know.

Adele's 21 holds at #3 in the U.S. It also holds at #1 in the U.K. for the 10th straight week. It's the first album by a female solo artist to spend 10 consecutive weeks at #1 since the U.K. album chart was introduced in 1956. The old record was held by Madonna's The Immaculate Collection, which held the top spot for nine straight weeks in 1990.

The Official Charts Co., which monitors U.K. sales, notes that 21 sold 250,000 copies in the U.K. this week. That's its biggest weekly total to date, which suggests that the album hasn't run its course at #1. If it spends one more week on top, it will tie Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill and Shania Twain's Come On Over for the longest run at #1 (continuous or not) by a female solo artist. Check back next week and see if Adele does it.

Chris Brown's F.A.M.E. drops from #1 to #4, but here's a stat that may surprise you. The album has sold more copies in its first two weeks (362,000) than Brown's last album, Graffiti, has in its entire run (342,000). Graffiti was released just 10 months after Brown's assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna. Memories fade. Fans forgive.

Radiohead's The King Of Limbs debuts at #6, with sales of 69K copies. The tally consists of 46K CDs and 23K digital copies. The album's previous digital sales, through the band's website, aren't counted in the album's "release-to-date" total.

Snoop Dogg's Doggumentary debuts at #8. It's Snoop's first album since he landed his biggest pop hit, Katy Perry's "California Gurls," which topped the Hot 100 for six weeks last year. This isn't the first Mr. Dogg has played with his stage name in an album title, witness Doggy Style, Tha Doggfather and No Limit Top Dogg.

Two contemporary gospel albums appear in this week's top 10 (perhaps to help us atone for all the "F word" hits). Kirk Franklin's Hello Fear drops from #5 to #9 in its second week. Mary Mary's Something Big bows at #10. It's the third top 10 album for both acts.

Adele and Justin Bieber this week become the first artists to sell 1 million or more albums in the U.S. in 2011 (combining all their releases). Adele has sold 1,070,000 albums since the first of the year. Bieber has sold 1,053,000. These artists don't otherwise have much in common, but that's pop music for you.

My headline for Chart Watch: Songs will be "And Then There Were Four." It has something to do with "E.T." by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, which tops Hot Digital Songs for the fourth straight week and will probably lead the Hot 100 for the second week. But what does it mean? Check back later today and find out.

6. Radiohead, The King Of Limbs, 69,000. This new entry is the band's fifth top 10 album.

7. Jennifer Hudson, I Remember Me, 56,000. The album drops from #2 to #7 in its second week. "Where You At" drops from #77 to #149 on Hot Digital Songs.

8. Snoop Dogg, Doggumentary, 50,000. This new entry is Snoop's ninth top 10 album. He scored his first, Doggy Style, in November 1993.

9. Kirk Franklin, Hello Fear, 46,000. The album drops from #5 to #9 in its second week.

10. Mary Mary, Something Big, 42,000. This new entry is the sister duo's third top 10 album, following Mary Mary (#8 in 2005) and The Sound (#7 in 2008).

Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. The Strokes' Angles drops from #4 to #18, Panic! At The Disco's Vices & Virtues dives from #7 to #32, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More drops from #8 to #11, Bobby V's Fly On The Wall plummets from #9 to #60, and Lupe Fiasco's Lasers drops from #10 to #16.

The Sucker Punch soundtrack jumps from #31 to #22. It's the week's #1 soundtrack.

Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party jumps from #26 to #23. It's #1 on Top Country Albums for the fourth week. It's the first album by a male solo artist to top the country chart that long since Brad Paisley's 5th Gear in the summer of 2007.

The week's top TV soundtrack is Grey's Anatomy: The Music Event, which debuts at #24. The album features the cast performing such songs as Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" and The Fray's "How To Save A Life." (The cast's renditions of those songs enter Hot Digital Songs this week, though in each case, the original hit debuts a little higher.) This is the third album from Grey's Anatomy to make the top 30. Two albums of music that was featured on the show made the top 20 in 2006-2007, when Grey's was at its buzzy peak.

Two volumes of E-40's Revenue Retrievin' debut in the top 50. Graveyard Shift bows at #40. Overtime Shift opens at #42. The albums were just 200 units apart in sales, which suggests that most fans bought both.

Elton John's 2007 compilation Rocket Man-Number Ones re-enters the chart at #45 in the wake of American Idol's "Elton John Week." (Elton and Leon Russell also appeared on Saturday Night Live.) Rocket Man sold 13,000 copies this week. American Idol had 24.2 million viewers, which means about one in 2,000 Idol viewers bought the album. (That's the difference between watching TV for free and buying something.)

Elton's album is #1 for the first time on Top Catalog Albums. It's the first album with the magic phrase Number Ones in (or as) its title to top the catalog chart since Michael Jackson's Number Ones led the list for 28 weeks in 2009-2010. George Strait's 50 Number One Hits topped the catalog chart in May 2009. The Beatles' 1 and Elvis' Elv!s: 30 #1 Hits also topped the catalog chart.

Four Elton songs re-enter Hot Digital Songs this week. Details in Chart Watch: Songs.

A 25th anniversary concert rendition of Les Miserables is #1 on Top Music Videos. The concert features such notables as Nick Jonas (of Jonas Brothers) and Lea Salonga (the voice of Disney's Mulan and Princess Jasmine). A "10th Anniversary Concert" of the hit musical topped the Music Video chart for 22 weeks from October 1996 to March 1997.

Hop was #1 at the box-office over the weekend.

Coming Attractions: Jim Jones' Capo and Hollywood Undead's American Tragedy are expected to be among next week's top new entries. Also due: Robbie Robertson's How To Become Clairvoyant, Mint Condition's 7, Asking Alexandra's Reckless & Relentless and a reissue of Rush's 1981 album Moving Pictures.

^^ I think that's going a little far. Britney hasn't gone multi-platinum with an album since 2003 so it won't be devastating if this ends up with a 800-1000k total. True, Circus sold over 500k in its first week but a 276k opening in March/April is hardly a sign of failure. She's proven she's still a force as far as singles are concerned and I think the public still cares about her

The top selling digital album so far this year is Adele's "21," with scans of 456,000 units, which is almost half the 942,000 total units the album has racked up as the best-selling album this year so far.

I'm still amazed at Adele's digital sales.

Yah- Spears' "end of an era" probably was In the Zone. Though, it's possible Circus could be certified double platinum at some point. Though The Singles Collection probably hampered its catalog sales. Her hardcore fanbase does strongly support any fresh single releases, though it did less so with this album's second single.

Adele's digital sales are pretty strong, given that her music probably would cater more to CD-buying consumers.

Well 'In The Zone" had "Toxic" at least which is arguably her best single. Well all her personal troubles in the past ended the era so to speak. While she still experienced some success after, it just wasn't the same. Femme Fatale's first week sales are somewhat disappointing, HIAM didn't have longevity ("3" did better) and TTWE is not a smash out of the gate. Crystal NEEDS to promote on idol, or this will be her last week on the chart.

Glad to see Fantasia sneak back in for the week after an idol perfomrnace, the album is at 435k, it should eaisly hit 450k by the end of the year (500k is being a bit optimistic), but i think a 530k to 435k decline isnt bad at all

Glad to see Carrie back as well, who will hit 2 million by the end of the year

^^ to be fair TTWE had a very nice number for its first 6 days on sales (the typical amount in one week for a new track) it just had the sales split up into two different chart weeks.
