^Well, that's true, but that also followed a huge hit, didn't it? On the other hand, there are big one-hit wonder hits, and that could have been one for The Product G&B. More likely than not, new music labeled just "Santana" would not have done as well as it did at radio and, in turn, sales, for Carlos and company at that time.

Alicia Keys helped ESOM a bit, but it was Jay-Z's second of three consecutive top 10 singles during a period when Alicia had failed to hit the top 20 with her previous 5 singles. Actually ESOM wasn't getting much airplay in the beginning and Doesn't mean a thing was having huge updates the first few weeks. It was only after DMAT stalled that ESOM started to grow, so one could argue those Alicia spins were redirected to ESOM.

This is an interesting discussion and shame it's in a weekly Hot 100 thread. Should there be a separate one?
To continue, Sting had also a decent Top 20 hit 'Desert Rose' in 2000. It featured Cheb Mami so definitely didn't have a high-profile guest on it.

But in general, if you think about sales, today it seems that it's more about the music you release not about your age. Who would've thought that Enrique Iglesias would have more than one Top 10 hits in 2010? He's 36 and not even close to the 'coolest' artist right now.
You have to do uptempo and electronic stuff, but of course there are exceptions like Adele.
Rock doesn't sell downloads without huge promotion, no matter if it's done by young or old. Last year there was only one a bit of rock song in Top 10: Train's Hey Soul Sister. The only rock band I think could go Top 10 right now are Red Hot Chili Peppers.
For country artists it's a bit easier, see Blake Shelton two weeks ago for example but that was after a great promotional platform.
And then we have another question; is there any way rock could get promoted more? Mumford & Sons, Florence & The Machine and My Chemical Romance have proved people are willing to buy the well-promoted rock/alternative songs too.

Rock songs haven't sold particularly well since the hair metal trend died around 1990. There have been exceptions, of course.
There is an argument that once Soundscan underscored (and made public) how badly rock singles ACTUALLY sold, that labels stepped up the practice of not commercially releasing them, thus starting the horrible 90's trend of airplay-only hits.

Hmm interesting. I would've thought that cross-over rock songs like Black Hole Sun and Don't Speak would've been huge single sellers too. I thought it was more of labels wanting people to buy albums. Also, for a few years 2005-2007 there were several quite big rock hits: Green Day, Beverly Hills by Weezer, Mr. Brightside, MCR, Fall Out Boy etc. And then whole genre practically disappeared from Top 20.

Its still moving up pretty fast on Rhythmic and HOTAC and gaining a bit on CHR/POP It really depends on how much longevity it will have on POP. Once it starts to fall on POP, I think it will fall hard. Although it could pass 150mil.

Again, those "Toxic" numbers posted here were Mediabase- which, at that time, were even higher than they are today compared to BDS. "Toxic's" absolute BDS peak BDS- with a No. 10 airplay peak- was 75m-80m. BTW- notable is that both Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle's No. 1 '80s hits were collaborations. Plus, U.S. radio was a lot less ageist in the 80s than it became in the 90s and today. I think you can say post 1995, radio became ageist. Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, and Sting were still getting radio hits in the early 90's. By that point mass appeal pop radio was dead as stations started incorporating gangsta rap and grunge into station playlists. It drove older audiences away to adult contemporary and adult top 40 stations, and artists like Rod Stewart and Sting no longer appealed to a large enough number of people for pop radio to continue playing them. I don't think radio programmers directly decided around this time to blacklist older artists. It was just that most of the music performed by artists over the age of 40 was not appealing to the majority of pop radio listeners.

Re: Rock song sales. You are right, by 1996 labels were withholding singles in an effort to sell more albums (the term at the time was cannibalizing CD sales). But before that, the reason was quite simple - rock singles (like country singles before them) with the odd exception (Smells Like Teen Spirit; To Be With You; Under the Bridge) really were struggling - but their parent album sales were booming (thanks mainly to the grunge effect)
Not sure if something like "Don't Speak" would have smashed the sales chart. I think something like that would have been an exception given its huge airplay, but because of the greedy record labels, we'll never know.

^If the label abandons it, that would be one of the quickest runs, with the video premiering this week and all. It likely will see a boost from that, though. Airplay may be another matter.

This Gaga thing is weird. Given the speed, its like what happened with George Michael & Alanis Morissette right after their monster albums.

I was actually just thinking yesterday that what is going on with Gaga right now reminds me of what happened with George Michael's Listen without Prejudice. He followed an absolutely massive album with one that was supposed to be a grand artistic achievement. A lot of people thought it was just plain old pretentious and wanted the George Michael that released Faith back. The lead single (while polarizing and not what people expected) went to #1, but it fell like a rock after it peaked, and the album overall performed nowhere near the level of his first album.

The issues with this Gaga single might be its content is driving people away

Steph G. did have an 8-track release after the debut, though- in the 80s, some regular albums had that many tracks or one more. :) (though the tracks may have had longer running times)

I think it's back to back preachy content and people are getting over her schtick. Its like the opposite of Cyndi Lauper's sophomore where she dropped the weird and went for serious.

Well, i think Alicia Keys helped a lot for ESOM's success. Obsessed was released in 2009 and Mariah was 39 (however some sources claimed her birthdate year is 1969, she could be already 40 ). It hit top 5 Hot 100 Airplay right? And topping Rhytmic chart. And she had no featuring artist on that song. Eminem Yes, Eminem controversy as well the music video which featured fake Eminem definitely helped a lot

"Obsessed" peaked at No. 6 on Hot 100 Airplay. While that track performed well, it was not a BIG hit, especially by Mimi chart standards.
We can't say it's impossible for a 40-plus act to score a big hit in this day and age- it's just more challenging than it used to be.

^Well, Mimi Daily (which is "in" with Mimi's label) did have contests of some sort, but it usually does that for any single release. :)

I'm not even concerned about the performance of 'Judas'. It's Top 20 on CHR/Pop and has been in the Top 20 on iTunes ever since it's release, which is more than ABOVE AVERAGE for a song that's been out only three or four weeks. Even if it's sales are declining a little, they'll likely go up after Oprah (if she performs it there) and the music video release later this week. They've got lots of promotion planned for it, so I doubt her label is going to abandon it.

Granted, there really has been minimal promo for Judas, but it is strange that the song has been a bit underwhelming. I guess the controversial edge of the song didn't play out as successfully as expected even though I find this song to be a far better one than BTW.

I like Judas and it may squeak thru. The more interesting thing for me is to watch is how quickly arguably the most anticipated follow-up in years has gone from deafening buzz to the label really having to work the second single.

I always had a theory that the hottest star in music at the moment could release anything, including junk and it would go to #1.
'Judas' proved me wrong.
Yes I think the controversial nature of the song is what is keeping it down
The "Madonna"-song she released before this was much better
