Carrie Underwood happy to take it slow

She's one of American country music's hottest stars, yet Carrie Underwood is happy to take baby-steps towards conquering Australia.

The 2005 American Idol winner was all smiles on her first promotional visit, even after volcanic ash forced an unexpected overnight drive from Melbourne to Sydney.

Having sold 14 million albums in the US, the 28-year-old singer now hopes to make a big impression on the international stage.

She's reserved the scale of her ambition for a future tour but sights are set on a long and loving relationship with Australian music fans.

Starting with low-key showcases to media and fans, a bigger stage beckons at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium when Underwood will perform at Friday's Broncos match.

"I wanted to come to Australia and become a part of it and let everyone know I'd love to be part of it," she told AAP in Sydney.

"So far everybody's been really welcoming and sweet and whether I make it big here or not I would love to come back and spend some more time."

Since topping American Idol, Underwood has grown into a superstar back home, surpassing the earnings of original winner Kelly Clarkson and banking a reported $US15 million ($A14.1 million) last year.

She is married to US ice hockey star Mike Fisher and lives in Nashville, counting one-time tour buddy Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman among her neighbours.

Resisting the lure of New York or Hollywood, a southern-state lifestyle offers a grounding easiness which the former beauty queen is keen to continue.

"People are very family orientated there and I can record and do video or photo shoots but it's still a really good environment," she says.

These are lucrative times for US country-pop crossover stars.

The success of Underwood, Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum has attracted attentions from far beyond the heartlands of country music.

With downloads and singles selling bigger volumes than complete albums it makes business sense to spread into new territories.

And former American Idol or not, Underwood knows any forward thinking artist needs to stay on their toes.

"I think it's more difficult for new artists in general to maintain success," she says.

"The music industry has changed so much and so many people now just have singles because no one's buying albums.

"You have a lot of one or two hit wonders or one album wonders."

While Underwood still receives the occasional snipe from country music diehards criticising a glitzy video or shouting `pop', the battle lines have blurred since she started out.

Shania Twain started the trend of good time country sweethearts storming the charts and Underwood is keen to carry on her good work.

"It's a lot more accepted to be different in country music right now," Underwood says.

"You turn on the radio and nobody sounds like the person that was on just before them, everyone's got their own style and there's something for everyone.

"It's a fun time."

Like MJs Big Blog, Yahoo! Music also did a feature on Idols' booking fees but they got a little more info after speaking directly with the liaison agency who published the figures:

...Carrie can earn half a million for a single concert (although her fee might be as low as $200,000 if she's currently touring, or a cool million if she isn't...

So Carrie's fee can range from $200K to $1 million. Not bad at all ;)

I'm thinking this could have been for rehearsal since we haven't heard much about it other than the article posted above.

ETA: The performance is listed for Friday Aussie time and it's approx. 4 AM there. We'll be hearing more about it tomorrow. These particular pics were from the media-only showcase... two separate events.

Carrie Underwood, Gary Allan and Darius Rucker are among those who will be volunteering their time during the second annual ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp taking place June 26-July 1 in Nashville. Little Big Town, Wynonna, producer Mark Bright and songwriters Odie Blackmon and Brett James will also offer their time to the program aimed at individuals with developmental disabilities. Funded by the Academy of Country Music, the camp enables the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center in its work to improve the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families through research, training and service. Activities planned during the camp include a recording session with Underwood and Bright, a songwriting session with Allan, Blackmon and James and a live performance with Rucker at the Grand Ole Opry.

I wonder if a switch in producers would give Carrie that award-winning album? Just a thought.

On another note I feel Carrie and Mark were heading in the right direction with "Play On" after the production level on "Carnival Ride". Hopefully it only continues to improve.

I certainly wouldn't mind Carrie experimenting with some other producers. How awesome would it be if she got someone like Shania's ex-husband, Mutt Lange to produce a song for her?

eh I don't know, he'd probably bust a move.

I think it would be a risk that Carrie might not be willing to take yet.

Country music superstar Carrie Underwood performed a six-song showcase at the Museum of Contemporary Art last night for assorted media and music industry execs.

The 2005 American Idol winner is in Australia to promote the re-release of her new album Play On, which was originally released in 2009.

While not a huge name in this country, the 28-year-old is a megastar at home having notched up 10 #1 hits and racking up 13 million album sales.

And if the reception she received last night is any indication, it’s only a matter of time before Carrie experiences similar success here.

The pretty blonde was introduced by Sony CEO Denis Handlin and wowed the crowd with brilliant renditions of her hits Cowboy Casanova, So Small and Last Name.

She then brought out the big guns, singing her iconic smash Jesus, Take The Wheel, current single Undo It (below) and arguably her signature song Before He Cheats.

A special Australian tour edition of Carrie’s album Play On has just been released and comes with seven bonus tracks.
