Forgettable era? Both Mine" and "Back to December" peaked in the top 10 on Hot 100 Airplay, and "Mean" is another country top 10- so let's not cry for Ms. Swift just because has not scored a multi-format smash along the lines of "Love Story" or "You Belong with Me." :) Exactly. I think Choco just meant that he finds the singles released this era to be forgettable in terms of their musicality, though.

If Adele's song and album can hang on top for just a little longer she's won the hotly contested pop diva race of 2011 hands down and also positions herself as the one to beat for AOTY. It's pretty remarkable for an artist like her to be receiving this type of mainstream success. Gaga will debut huge, but the album's longevity is still in question if she doesn't get another radio smash. I'd say Katy's pretty much even with Rihanna and then we have Britney then P!nk, etc. in terms of overall impact as we head into the middle of the year.

Looks like radio isn't all that thrilled with "The Story of Us" as of right now. This has been a pretty forgatable era for Swift in terms of singles. Indeed, you have to wonder how much it would've sold if it had "Love Story" and "YBWM" sized hits on it.

Hmm, if things don't pick up this could be her floppiest promoted single. How disappointing; I quite like it.

it's so dumb how you refer to one album as an era.

Oh, well...country is still Taylor's primary format, and her latest single there was/is a hit. I won't be too disappointed if 'The Story of Us' fails to smash. I think Taylor's music sounds incredibly out of place on Mainstream radio. It's incredible both "Mine" and "Back to December" peaked as high as they did considering there's been nothing else remotely country on top 40. I expected "The Story of Us" to outperform those two singles on top 40 because it's faster and a bit less country... but looks like it might not go as high.

sorry, i wasn't following Taylor's singles for quite a while. Just check on Allaccess, so "Mean" is a country single and "The Story of Us" is a top 40 single right?

^Correct. Not sure if "The Story of Us" was promoted to Hot AC- it's not currently in the Mediabase top 40 there.

It's currently top 50 on hot ac. 46 44 TAYLOR SWIFT The Story Of Us 323 286 37 1.745 If it stalls, her label should wait until Mean peaks in the next few weeks on country and send out Sparks Fly to all the formats. If any song is capable of being that YBWM/LS sized hit of the record, it's that song.

Isn't "Mean" the most country-sounding of tracks on the album, though? Then again, "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me" were big country hits.

You are right about Mean being the most country-sounding track on the record. What makes Sparks Fly so accessible is that it's country enough to be a possibly #1 on the country chart, yet catchy enough to be a possible top 5 pop hit.

thanks for the answer, i was pretty confused when i saw the video of TSOF. I was like, so early? So her label is aiming for a sizable top 40 hit to revive the era.
Agreed with "Sparks Fly" to all formats.

Why would an album NOT be considered an era?

Why would an album NOT be considered an era? Maybe he means an era is a longer stretch of an artist's career? Like Britney's first four albums would be considered an "era" of her career and the most recent three would be another? Doesn't make much sense for the way we use the term, but some people may use it that way.

I can understand both sides. Like, I get why if an an artist releases albums in short time span or with a specific sound I get why a 4 year-period can be called an "era" for them. Like Britney Spears first four albums like wolf said.
But for artists that change up their sounds drastically every album I can get why each album is called an era, like say Rihanna whose image changes frequently.
Meh, it just depends on what people like to classify it as. There's no wrong way to look at it.

I am annoyed with Taylor's single choices. It feels like they have deliberately chosen songs that won't do that well or become LS/YBWM sized. I know people seem to love The Story of Us and think it would be that type of hit, but eh, no. It never sounded like a smash to me. Maybe she is just focused on country this album though?

I had a bad feeling when they choose Story of Us as the pop single. I was never really crazy about it but grew to like it. Better Than Revenge should have been the third pop single. This is what I'd do: End of June: Sparks Fly (all formats) Beginning of November: Better Than Revenge (POP/HAC/AC), Speak Now (Country)

Fame Hooker-she has better songs on her cd though. I feel like she is falling slightly into Carrie Underwood territory where they are releasing really safe "no-brainer" singles that are so safe they just cannot have the impact that a great, but slightly outside the box release would have. Both girls have great cds, great songs, and enough fire to pull off great songs-both of their labels need to realize this! Maybe they will pretend like The Story of Us never happened and move on from it?

I think that after Memorial Day weekend the chart will see a lot of movement. Alot of the songs in the top 20 will plummet and the summer songs will FINALLY start to really take off - Last Friday Night, Super Bass, etc.

I think people set their expectations too high for Taylor on the pop format. Coming off two singles that didn't crack the Top 10... it seemed obvious that 'The Story Of Us' would have performed about the same, if that even.

I would say that baby one more time and oidia can be looked at as an era based on similar style of.music. Britney was a transitional album...in the zone was her experimental college years...I don't see how any of these albums can be clumped together. But if you all are going to do it...that would make the most sense. I still believe each album era has a different mission and objective for.most artists which is why I call each album its individual era...but whatever.
