Given the performance (or lackthereof) of Ashani‘s recent efforts, many have been scratching their heads as to why the singer is releasing her project via own label Written Entertainment.

For, while her present-day stock may not be high, her Platinum flavoured achievements from yesteryear precede her. Hence, the former INC songstress would likely be a shoe-in for a fresh deal at any major label of her choosing.

In an interesting new interview with Sirus radio, the 32 year old sounds off on her reason for going independent and the difficulty in turning down a whopping seven record contracts in the time since her last studio album ‘The Declaration’.

I'm all for going independent and making your own money by cutting out the middle man, but damn, at least have a golden team and vision!!! And Hits.

Tyrese went independent, released an album that has sold 410k to date (which is AMAZING!), and has had some decent airplay hits.

Ashanti, Torrey DeVitto and Elle McLemore are reporting for duty on Army Wives.

The trio have booked series regular roles on the upcoming seventh season of the Lifetime drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Singer-songwriter-producer-actress Ashanti, whose credits include Resident Evil: Extinction, John Tucker Must Die and Coach Carter, will make her series regular debut as Latasha Durant, an optimistic mother of three: 11-year-old Quincy Jr. (known as Deuce), daughter Nyah, 8, and Gabe, 6, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. Latasha is described as a survivor with no self-pity who is determined to wrench all the joy out of life that she can. She's a sexy, fun woman who knows how to keep a husband -- and keep him in line.

DeVitto will play Maggie Hall, an ex-Army Airborne-turned-truck driver. She's sexy and smart with an edge and has a blue-collar upbringing in Saginaw, Mich., where the economy went south -- along with her marriage. Leaving her deadbeat husband and taking her son Tanner, 10, with her, she joined the Army to start over and found love again and married Eddie, a staff sergeant who has a 14-year-old daughter. Maggie left the Army in order to devote herself to being a wife and mother, with Eddie recently transferred to Joint Base Marshall Bring.

McLemore, who starred on Broadway's Bring It On and guest starred on The Middle and The Suite Life on Deck, will play Holly Gordon, a wide-eyed, bespectacled farm girl from Effingham, Ill., who's newly married to a soldier and homesick, having never been more than 100 miles from home. She's a pretty girl who doesn't know it who's further described as sweet, honest and in need of friends in order to make it through her husband's deployment.

Army Wives, which was renewed in September, will return with a major shake-up for its seventh season with star Kim Delaney exiting the drama and co-star Sally Pressman recurring as the series will confront the aftermath of the deadly plane crash featured in its sixth-season finale.

Ashanti is repped by Media Artists Group and Universal Attractions. DeVitto, who recurs on both Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, is with APA, Insight and Hansen Jacobson and next appears in Lifetime's holiday movie The Real St. Nick (set for Dec. 15). McLemore is with Paradigm and Morris Yorn.

I'm pretty excited for this! I guess I gotta start watching the previous seasons of the show!

NEW YORK, NY (January 23, 2013) – The seventh season of Lifetime’s hit drama Army Wives will see new challenges to the tribe, including a heartfelt and final goodbye to one of their own in one of the series’ most dramatic and pivotal moments. Army Wives follows the struggles, dreams and friendships of a diverse group of women – and one man – living with their spouses and families on an active Army post. The series stars Catherine Bell, Brian McNamara, Kelli Williams, Wendy Davis, Terry Serpico, Alyssa Diaz and JJ Soria. Sally Pressman and Sterling K. Brown will also appear in several episodes.

Ashanti will make her series regular debut in Army Wives as “Latasha Montclair,” a force of nature and an indomitable spirit for whom “southern hospitality” isn’t just a concept, it’s a way of life. Latasha finds joy in navigating the daily chaos of singlehandedly wrangling her three children while her husband, “Quincy” (Joshua Henry, Godspell, The Scottsboro Boys), is deployed overseas.

DeVitto will portray “Maggie Hall,” a former airborne soldier with three deployments in Iraq under her belt who is more comfortable fixing Army trucks or riding her motorcycle than decorating her living room. Maggie is hanging up her dog tags and focusing on her new mission: motherhood and marriage to her second husband, Staff Sergeant “Eddie Hall” (Burgess Jenkins, Remember the Titans).

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter and actor McCartney, best known for his chart-topping hit song “Beautiful Soul” and his role on All My Children, for which he received two Daytime Emmy nominations, joins Army Wives as Private “Tim Truman,” an enthusiastic young soldier determined to prove himself on his first deployment.

McLemore, who starred on Broadway’s Bring It On, will play “Holly Truman,” Tim’s high school sweetheart and newlywed wife. I never understand how an entire album gets scrapped like this, especially someone like Ashanti who doesn't do concept albums and sticks to a certain sound from album to album. They just came to the realization that all the material they recorded was garbage?

I don't necessarily mean release the album as is, but I don't understand how the entire album gets scrapped. You'd think they'd record a few new songs but not scrap everything they've already recorded.
