^Less than Rihanna and Britney's last eras? Like someone said before hitting those high profile platforms, you really can't get any higher, she did trumps any roundup of late night talk show performances. Some act like she did karaoke club dates. Yeah she had more high profile promo than Rihanna and Britney.....Rihanna just had hit singles, she wasnt everywhere promoting...only big thing from her I recall around the time Loud dropped was the AMA opening performance + that was even after it was in stores....... Britney promoted only the week of her album + that wasnt that much..... Beyonce's promotional slots a month ago reached a much bigger audience than either of them did before their album came out. Not sure about Katy Perry thou....dont really follow her lol Okay so you're saying 2 big shows A MONTH before your album that didn't even help your single to not flop has a greater influence on your album sales than a string of successful singles? And YES singles are a form of album promotion. But again, I don't even know why people are making it seem like selling because of promo is a bad thing.

Not only is she starting off better than alot of her current female rivals(minus Godelle & GaGa)...she's also getting better reviews too. I'm sure the word of mouth and the very positive reviews are helping her out. Sales & Critical acclaim, Oh Bey....you making the gurls seeeeth. And Chris hit it on the head. Now a days when people don't like an artist who's seeing some success there accomplishments are always brought down because of promo. Well Adele had soooo much promo. Well XTina/Maroon 5 had the voice promo/JLO had AI promo/Katy performed at such and such award show. When the fuck did promo become a bad thing? You do realize promo is good at getting the word out, but if people don't like what they are hearing(RTW for example or Bionic for example)they aren't buying.

I don't think it was off topic. My point being a Chris Brown fan, thinking sensibly isn't really your thing. Not a personal attack or anything. The 3 big shows a month before the album dropped got her more recognition+praise than any of the others......it didnt save her single from flopping but I recall vividly how the stans kept going on about it rising over 100 spots on itunes and reach the top 20 after almost falling out the top 200 so it did have some effect. And yes, performances that cause widespread praise+recognition by the public is better than simply a string of successful singles........JasonDerulo,Jay Sean,Pitbull,Florida anyone..........esp if those artists with big singles dont have big platforms to promote themselves or albums on. U cant survive just being a radio or digital artist

Rihanna appeared at EVERY award show, EVERY talk show and BOTH morning shows. None of that happened BEFORE Loud was released.........What u said has nothing to do with promotion that affects 1st week sales which is what we were talking about..........she did not appear at every award show or talk show or morning shows leading up to her album release

I just don't understand the issue here...the fact the Beyoncé did promotion for RTW (as any pop star would for their first single) gave her an unfair advantage?
No one was stopping Britney (or others) from doing promo, I'm sure a lot of late night/morning talk shows would have welcomed her with open arms. It's her/her team's own fault for not taking advantage. I'm not seeing the point in faulting Beyoncé for taking advantage of the tools at her disposal.

Loud was also released during the holidays with a big hit single.....All this is moot. Doesn't take away from Bey's good sales and even with a flop single she's selling on par or above alot of her "rivals".......
I'm just happy the album is going to post good opening numbers :) She still has a great fan base and with her talent the sky's the limit!

Whatever. The how & why is irrelevant.- Beat Britney's debut without having a hit single? CHECK
- More than double Katy's debut without having a hit single? CHECK
- Beat Rihanna's debut without having a hit single despite Riri benefiting from November? CHECK
- More than double Ke$ha's debut without having a hit single despite Ke$ha having the biggest song of that year? CHECK

Are you all actually saying because she had a series of notable appearances a month ago they had little to no effect on album week? Like really??? So I guess Columbia completely wasted their efforts.
Seriously if they waited to start the promo trail this week like a lot of R&B acts do her fanbase and name alone would have never gotten this north of 250k after how the singles performed. The only mistake they made was continuing to beat a dead horse with RTW instead of switching to BTNH earlier even though her profile was kept high.

No the promo obviously helps(that's the point of promo)but you do know no matter how many times you promote the public actually has to like what you are promoting for it to work(RTW, Xtina, ect).
Bey had some nice promo, all the stars get promo, it's just even with the promo...a week ago people still predicted gloom, and the fact she's possibly starting out with this much is good news. Jeepers, nobody;s taking away from Rihanna, Britney, Katy, ect ect ect success, we are just happy that the album is pulling in these kinds of numbers when not too long ago the words "Bionic" "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" and even "Basic Instinct" numbers were being thrown around.
With the good reviews coming in for this album, and with songs like Countdown and End of Time, and Columbia now behind the project again, this era's turning around for the better :)

Rihanna appeared at EVERY award show, EVERY talk show and BOTH morning shows. Most of the Award shows were after her album release. The AMAs were about 5 days after her release date and she did not do every talk show. She did not do Oprah, Ellen, The View, Wendy, Monique or any of those shows. She did GMA the week the album was released. She did not do The Today Show until June again the album came out in November. What are you talking about?

Slayin' :'( :'( :'( Hit single or not you still have to promote your album unless you're Alicia Keys or Sade. Hit singles don't affect first week sales. Hit singles affect longevity.

Rihanna appeared at EVERY award show, EVERY talk show and BOTH morning shows. Exactly Exactly. I don't know why her fans keep lying she didn't. I remember she had AMA's somwhere during the release week and she did mtv, all thos shows like letterman, bet, mtv7 and so on. 300k for beyonce is not good, however. I know she doesn't have a hit single and I expected this numbers but for someone who strives to be an icon and works harder than everyone else she is underperforming. I would not copmare her to rihanna, britney and gaga, katy since she is a league of her own. And that's what makes 300k for her bad, if you understand what I'm trying to say. pS, I love the album.

It's a Chris Brown fan.... I'm not really sure what you expected. What does that have to do with anything???? Jesus, some of U get so emotional if there are any conflicting views....especially when its a view so obvious that U cant respond with anything other than lashing out with personal attacks or going off topic That's the main thing keeping me from stanning for bey... I'm a fan but the stan are quick to attack when their fave isn't doing so well and when there fave is...they r constantly going to bring up others...but if you were to bring up.someone doing more than their faves...its trolling. Same stuff, different day. But to jump in...whoever made a comment about the bet awards well they are a core urban audience with decent audience numbers...in fact this year was their second highest viewed of all time.

Slayin' :'( :'( :'( The first bullet isn't determined just yet...most likely though. Remember Britney also had projections of 275-300k. Tomorrow they should do an update to determine how close it will get or if it will go higher. The others have been determined but why would she be slaying...does that mean the artists that can actually score hit singles and show consistent sales with their latest efforts are slaying or are they just successful in their own right. Or is this just gloating because this is.all there is to.go.on now?

She was never gonna do less than 250k first week with all of the promo. Frankly I would have been shocked if she did, but the lack of Irreplaceable type radio smash on the album is what's going to get her in the end like Alicia. I don't think her promotion has been any more over the top than most big artists pull out on their release week. Hell, she isn't even doing anything till the weekend! Christina had about as much if not more with Bionic and that obviously went quite differently. The fact that her singles have bombed and its still doing this well shows Beyonce's gotten to the point where she's respected enough to not necessarily need big hits to sell albums. People try to throw out 'oh, they promoted a bunch' when someone they hoped to see fail doesn't and it never really makes much sense.

We have to disagree to agree on this one, sorry. That BB tribute and the ubiquitous commercials alone (watching one as I type) contributed a considerable deal of that 275-300k. To shrug it off makes no sense. She would have most likely not sold that had she had the exact same debut promo schedule as Brit and Rihanna for example.
A solid debut week was never in doubt at least with me, but let's see how this fares when the smoke clears and the songs have to stand on their own.

This is probably the least promo I've seen from Bey ever. She promoted her concert video s**t more than this album. Word, anyone who has followed Beyonce's career can tell you this promo is relatively light for her. I really fail to see how what we're seeing this week is any bigger than what Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, Christina, etc. etc. did when they dropped their latest CDs. Does anyone honestly believe some month old performance at and award show caused these numbers to blow up? It just seems like people were expecting a bloodbath this week and are looking for excuses now that they're not getting it.

Was gonna point that out also- double Katy Perry's opening would be more than 380K.
I doubt Queen B's album will end up in tons of best-of lists (the true measure of level of acclaim)- none of her other albums have, either- but it's good that it's getting a decent reception.
I hope the number is closer to or exceeds 300K.

She's not even promoting until the weekend on the week of her album release! All of her promo has been over a month ago and a BET Awards performance aired via satellite is not huge promo. The point here is that everyone expected her to flop and she's not and now you can't even fathom how she's winning. Well, she's Beysus. She don't FAIL. they seem extremely upset.. what happened to 4" doing Bionic numbers?

^No, her *singles* were- i.e. "Crazy in Love," "Single Ladies." Her albums, on the other hand, did not receive comparable level of acclaim. Go check Acclaimed Music (especially spreadsheet for the 2000s- the decade-end lists have not yet been officially added to the site).

I remember people here on Pulse and other blogs were being over dramatic saying "oh her career is over", " nobody's checking for her", "this is Bionic pt 2", she might not even pull in 80k", blah blah blah. It's really ridiculous, people are just making up excuses now, her promo schedule has been nothing compared to her last era's. Bey has worked too hard to let one underperforming single stop her, people should just accept that she's not going anywhere and she's still a force to be reckoned with.

This thread is a mess.
I especially enjoy how people have set up all these arbitrary parameters for what will/won't make this album a success. They keep raising the bar. "It hasn't turned around yet, it might have turned around if it hit 400k, but not now", "It will only be a success if it makes some top ten albums lists", "Britney would have had 100,000 more copies than Beyonce if she'd had similar promo".
Let's quickly dispel this myth that Beyonce has been on some massive promo blitz in the US for the last week. Did someone really try and credit Beyonce's performance at Glastonbury for a significant portion of her opening US sales? She did Oprah, Billboard and Idol a month ago. For the single. And it didn't really do all that much. For whatever reason. So can someone explain to me how the promotional benefits were so specific and selective, that they didn't turn the single into a smash then and there, but a month later it's been permeating in people's minds enough to make them rush out and buy the album?
I don't think people realize how quickly the general public forget. On Pulse, we remember the when, where, what and how of every little performance but that's not how it works in the real world. Months old performances don't sell albums. Hit singles do, massive presence during release week does, genius marketing tools (Amazon discounts) do. So it's remarkable that in the middle of summer, without a hit single and ONE performance in the US during the release week so far, Beyonce's number's are projected this high.
They're impressive taking everything into consideration, they're impressive relative to what everyone else opened with, they're impressive relative to her own openings. I'd say more so than Sasha Fierce, which sold a hundred and fifty thousand more with two hit singles, Q4 release and a true promo blitz that week. If people were trying to 'blame' (through some backwards logic, that's the word) the album's European opening week numbers on promo, I'd swallow it, but not the US. Sorry.
As far as Britney goes...their domestic promotional schedules for the album release will not be all that different. High profile awards show slot(s), MTV Special, Good Morning America. Let's not try and pretend there's been a massive difference.
Again I shouldn't be surprised. The single thread's gone quiet, the album thread's gone quiet. This seems to be the last place people can discredit and devalue a project that was widely-projected as doomed by most around her and many in the press. Clutching on straws in an effort not to admit you were wrong isn't cool. Just enjoy the naysayer pie and move on. Lots of artists are having lots of success. It's strange to think there'd be a more positive vibe to this thread if she'd had the Bionic situation that so many people were crossing their fingers for.
