Destiny's Child - No, No, No
The song was intended to be given to Brandy, but TPTB wanted Destiny's Child to record it.

Reading this thread from the beginning, Leona Lewis and/or her label have rejected so many massive hits. How come.... There's always the possibility that they didn't see the big hit potential of those particular songs. Leona may have approached the songs' recordings differently had she done them and they might not have been as successful as the versions that actually were by the artists who went on to record the songs.

Leona may have approached the songs' recordings differently had she done them and they might not have been as successful as the versions that actually were by the artists who went on to record the songs. Some of them may also not have been "rejected" per se, but writers shop their songs around, and generally aren't just waiting on 1 artist to say no before taking it to the next. Its possible some of them were just snatched up by other artists and she never actually had a chance to get beyond a demo

Middle of the Night by Elley Duhé was originally written for The Weeknd, but she kept it for herself after he turned it down.

Michael Jackson - Heaven Can Wait
What was supposed to be the 2nd single from Invincible (but was swapped with Butterflies), Heaven Can Wait was co-written with Teddy Riley and was intended to be for Blackstreet, however Michael asked to keep the song for himself.

Toni Braxton - Breathe Again
Babyface originally offered Breathe Again to Pebbles, who was going to give it to TLC, however Toni heard the demo and wanted to try it.

Celine Dion - The Last to Know
Originally recorded by Sheena Easton in 1987, but due to record label complications the album the song was on didn't get a US release until 1999. Multiple songs from the album ended up being given to other artists.

Sia - UnstoppableSia said she wrote this with Katy in mind but Sia ended up recording it for her own album Seems apropos to bring this up again now that the song has managed to go viral and debut on the Hot 100 for the first time this week.

I don’t remember whether it was Unstoppable or some other deep cut, though.

Whitney Houston "Come Share My Love" meant for/recorded by Whitney Houston for her 1987 "Whitney" album. Clive ended up not using it, Miki Howard recorded it instead. "Don't Look Any Further" was recorded for her 1985 self titled debut album as a duet with Jermaine Jackson. The songwriter ended up giving the song to Dennis Edwards and Seidah Garrett and they released it instead. Michael Jackson wanted Whitney Houston/Diana Ross/or Barbara Striesand for "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" - Clive said no on Whitney's behalf because he wanted a Whitney solo song to kick off her second project, Barbra said she was too old, and who knows why Diana turned him down. He used Seidah Garrett (who co-wrote "Man In The Mirror") instead. "I Have Nothing" was written for Patti Labelle - she turned it down. "How Many Times, How Many Lies" was recorded for her 2002 "Just Whitney..." album. The song didn't make the cut, and Diane Warren gave it to the Pussycat Dolls. They even used her vocal as their demo. "Heartbreak Hotel" was written for TLC, who turned it down. Whitney also turned down a bunch of Disney songs in the 90s notably "Colors Of The Wind" I could only imagine if TLC didn’t reject “Heartbreak Hotel”.

Just read this a couple of days ago and perhaps it was already mentioned. Although it wasn´t a rejection. Madonna's Open Your Heart was written with Cyndi Lauper in mind and a bit more rock. Apparently Cyndi never had a chance to hear it. Madonna's team that was looking for songs for True Blue, got ahold of the song and Madonna liked it. The rest is history. ;)

Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters
Lindsey Buckingham was originally asked to write and record the theme to Ghostbusters, but he declined fearing he'd become a "soundtrack king."
Titanic Soundtrack
James Cameron originally asked Enya to score the film, but she turned it down. James Horner got the job instead.

Cyndi Lauper - True Colors
Arguably Cyndi's signature song was originally intended for Anne Murray, but she turned it down.

The two best on the album imo.

Ray Parker Jr - GhostbustersLindsey Buckingham was originally asked to write and record the theme to Ghostbusters, but he declined fearing he'd become a "soundtrack king." For context, this was shortly after National Lampoon's Vacation's "Holiday Road", which is probably Lindsey's best known, though not highest charting, song outside of Fleetwood Mac. As far as being seen as a "soundtrack king", Buckingham may not have wanted that image but Kenny Loggins apparently didn't mind it. Though the apprehension may have been understandable in the case of "Ghostbusters" given Ray Parker Jr.'s career trajectory; he had a bunch of previous hits, but that became and remains his signature song.

IMHO, Butterflies and Break of Dawn are much better ballads than Heaven Can Wait. Unbreakable being a single though - Sony should have listened to him for the uptempos even though I love You Rock My World.

Britney Spears - From the Bottom of My Broken Heart
Toni Braxton recorded the song for "Secrets," but the song didn't make the album.
