Whitney Houston
"Come Share My Love" meant for/recorded by Whitney Houston for her 1987 "Whitney" album. Clive ended up not using it, Miki Howard recorded it instead.
"Don't Look Any Further" was recorded for her 1985 self titled debut album as a duet with Jermaine Jackson. The songwriter ended up giving the song to Dennis Edwards and Seidah Garrett and they released it instead.
Michael Jackson wanted Whitney Houston/Diana Ross/or Barbara Striesand for "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" - Clive said no on Whitney's behalf because he wanted a Whitney solo song to kick off her second project, Barbra said she was too old, and who knows why Diana turned him down. He used Seidah Garrett (who co-wrote "Man In The Mirror") instead.
"I Have Nothing" was written for Patti Labelle - she turned it down.
"How Many Times, How Many Lies" was recorded for her 2002 "Just Whitney..." album. The song didn't make the cut, and Diane Warren gave it to the Pussycat Dolls. They even used her vocal as their demo.
"Heartbreak Hotel" was written for TLC, who turned it down.
Whitney also turned down a bunch of Disney songs in the 90s notably "Colors Of The Wind"

All posts on page 1 have been added to the main post. Thanks all who added.
Here's a couple more
Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing At All
Originally written for Meat Loaf, however his record label didn't want to pay royalties to Jim Steinman. He took back the song and it became a #2 hit for Air Supply (Bonnie Tyler later recorded it as well).
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
Originally written for Meat Loaf, but like with MLOONAA, his label refused royalites to Steinman, so he gave it to Bonnie. Incidentally, at one point both Steinman songs were #1 and #2 on the Hot 100 simultaneously.
Sugar Rush*
The song was originally recorded by the pop group A-Teens, and was later recorded by Dream Street. Although neither version of the song was officially released as a single, the song led to tension between the two groups, even at a point where the female members of A-Teens refused to perform at venues where Dream Street were also performing..
Toni Braxton - How Could An Angel Break My Heart
Babyface originally wrote the song for his own album, but later decided it was more suited for a woman.

I don't have confirmation of this, but there are reports that Timbaland originally wrote "Promiscuous" for Aaliyah. (Not including it on the first post for now)
And here's one recorded by the artist who rejected it:
Celine Dion - Goodbye's The Saddest Word
Originally offered during the "All the Way" sessions, however Celine turned it down cause she couldn't connect to the song. She also preferred another offering "If Walls Could Talk." After having her first child, she remembered the song, and went back to Mutt Lange and was able to get it back.

"Where Did Our Love Go" was rejected by the Marvelettes since they thought it was too childish. So it was passed to The Supremes, who also resented it when they recorded the song. It ended up being the first of twelve #1 hits for them, the most for any Motown act and the most for any girl group.
"Holiday" was rejected by Supremes member Mary Wilson for the same reasons she resented "Where Did Our Love Go"
"My Girl": Smokey Robinson had initially intended to have his group, The Miracles, record it but after some persuasion from The Temptations, he allowed them to record the song instead, which became their first #1 hit.
"One Bad Apple", by The Osmonds, was turned down by the Jackson 5 in favor of recording "ABC". Later on, "Ben", which was originally written for Donny Osmond, ended up being recorded by MJ.
"Got to Be There" was turned down by The 5th Dimension and was recorded by MJ.
"I Feel Good All Over" was rejected by Patti Labelle and ended being recorded by Stephanie Mills.
"I've Got Love on My Mind", was evidently turned down by Aretha Franklin. The song was recorded by Natalie Cole.
"Upside Down" was originally intended for Aretha but she turned it down and it went on to be a #1 hit for Diana Ross.

Brook Benton - It's Just A Matter of Time
Brook co-wrote the song with Clyde Otis, and offered it to Nat King Cole. Cole was preparing to record it, when Otis suggested to Benton that he keep it for himself instead which he did. Otis asked Cole not to record the song.

"I wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat me so Bad?" meant for Patrice Rushen, later recorded by Prince. I've heard this. Prince apparently had a crush on Patrice back then and wrote those songs specifically for her to sing. She wasn't feeling them so he just used them on his album. The former became his biggest hit until the release of "Little Red Corvette". I have one to add. Aaliyah originally recorded both "Come Over" and "I Don't Wanna" in 1999 during the same recording session. I Don't Wanna" was submitted by Aaliyah's label to Priority/EMI for the Next Friday soundtrack. "Come Over" was offered to R&B group Changing Faces by it's producer since Aaliyah hadn't planned on doing anything with it at the moment and it ended up on their 2000 album "Visit Me". They sung it the same way she did and it's pretty much the same exact song with their voices replacing hers. Their version wasn't released as a single. Aaliyah's family decided to put her version of "Come Over" on "I Care 4 U" as one of the unreleased tracks in 2002 and her version of the song ended up as her final single release and Top 40 hit on the Hot 100 in 2003.

I've always heard that LeAnn's version got passed on by the movie producers because her vocals weren't "mature" enough. It would be weird if they said it wasn't pop enough and then passed in on to Trisha Yearwood of all people...
I know these aren't HITS but J.Lo included Ryde Or Die on her Rebirth album, however it was originally written for Brandy's album Afrodisiac. Later they both recorded Loubotions and J.Lo released it. Ironically enough, right after this happened, they both got dropped from Epic.

"He Loves U Not" was originally intended for Britney for her sophomore album but it was passed to Dream.
Pharrell Williams had intended "I'm a Slave 4 U" for Janet but it was passed on to Britney. He had also intended "Milkshake" for Britney but it was passed on to Kelis.
"Sweet Dreams My LA Ex" was originally written for Britney as her answer to JT's "Cry Me A River" but went to Rachel Stevens.
"Hold It Against Me" was written for Katy Perry but the writers later felt that it wasn't a Katy song.
"Beautiful": Linda Perry wanted to keep it for herself but Christina convinced her to allow her to record it.
"Let's Get Loud" was originally for Gloria Estefan but she felt it was too similar to her previous work so it was recorded by J.Lo.
"La Isla Bonita" was offered to MJ for his "Bad" album but was passed to Madonna.
"Disturbia" was written for Chris Brown but he felt it was better suited for a female voice.
"I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" was originally written for Celine Dion but she passed on it so it went to Aerosmith.
"Can't Get You Out of My Head" was offered to Sophie Ellis-Bextor but she passed on it and it was given to Kylie Minogue.

"Hold It Against Me" was written for Katy Perry but the writers later felt that it wasn't a Katy song. Thank God.

I thought the writer said that he was influenced by something Katy said, which drove him to write the song. However, the song was never meant for Katy.

"Glamorous" was originally meant as a follow-up to Gwen Stefani's "Luxurious" but ended up being recorded Fergie instead. Actually the production and Ludacris's verse were meant to be used for the remix to "Luxurious" (with the same lyrics) but Gwen either scrapped it or wasn't able to finish it. Fergie wrote "Glamorous" over the beat which Luda had already rapped over, she decided to keep the verse because it fit her song also. Part of Gwen's remix eventually leaked on a mixtape. Pharrell Williams had intended "I'm a Slave 4 U" for Janet but it was passed on to Britney. He had also intended "Milkshake" for Britney but it was passed on to Kelis. Janet would've done Slave justice. I cannot imagine Britney doing Milkshake, though. Katy Perry doesn't really fit the song at all. I can't imagine anyone but Britney singing it, it really feels like it was tailor made for her. Didn't P!nk want it? I thought this was what lead to them hating each other.

Didn't P!nk want it? I thought this was what lead to them hating each other. Yes. Linda told her she wanted to use it for her comeback. Which Pink was cool with. She wasn't cool with Linda basically saying "no" to her and then "yes" to Christina. She said in an interview she was basically jealous. She thought she was losing her friend to someone she didn't even particularly like.

I thought about including Pink in my post but decided not to b/c she didn't reject "Beautiful". She did want it but wasn't given a chance to record it b/c Linda wanted to keep it for herself.
That's also why I thought about but didn't include "Halo" in my post. Leona's team/label wanted it but had to wait to see whether Beyonce wanted to record it or not. So technically they didn't reject it either.

"I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" was originally written for Celine Dion but she passed on it so it went to Aerosmith. Steven Tyler originally passed on the song himself. After the song went full circle, Diane tried having Liv Tyler (Steven's daughter, who also starred in Armageddon) to convince her dad to do the song. Liv & Diane arranged for Steven to have an advanced screening of the film, and tearfully he finally agreed to do the song.
