Carrie Underwood - Some Hearts
The song was actually written in the mid-90s for Kelly Levesque, who is currently one half of the duo Due Voci. After several staff changes on the label, Kelly's project was shelved.

The Carpenters - Sing Written for the TV Series "Sesame Street" Barbra Streisand also recorded the song, which flopped. After hearing the song Karen Carpenter wanted to record it, despite her manager thinking she was crazy for wanting it. Their version reached #3. The Carpenters' first big hit, "Close to You" was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and pitched to Herb Alpert, but he thought it would be better for a woman to sing and directed it to the Carpenters, then on his A&M label. Sylvia Robinson wrote "Pillow Talk" intending for Al Green to sing it, but it was rejected, so she sang it herself, using only her first name on the record, and it became a hit.

Lupe Fiasco Nothing On You Instead let's just sample/rip off Float On. Atlantic/Warner pretty much forced him to work with more mainstream producers. They almost dropped him for passing on "Nothin On You" and "Airplanes". I don't think he really had a choice in the matter.

I've always heard that LeAnn's version got passed on by the movie producers because her vocals weren't "mature" enough. It would be weird if they said it wasn't pop enough and then passed in on to Trisha Yearwood of all people... That's correct about the producers preferring Trishas interpretation of the song. If someone has a reference for the "too pop", I'd be interested in reading. I think that's just a modification to the story over time. Reba turned down Does Ft Worth Ever Cross Your Mind which became a hit for George Strait. Reba took issue with the alcohol reference in the song. Prostitution, adultery and murder were themes in later songs by Reba. Reba also turned down Independence Day, a signature song of Martina McBrides. Martina turned down Faith's Wild One?

I've always thought that "Wild One" would have suited Martina. It sounds like something she would have recorded in the 90s.

Whitney Houston "Come Share My Love" meant for/recorded by Whitney Houston for her 1987 "Whitney" album. Clive ended up not using it, Miki Howard recorded it instead. "Don't Look Any Further" was recorded for her 1985 self titled debut album as a duet with Jermaine Jackson. The songwriter ended up giving the song to Dennis Edwards and Seidah Garrett and they released it instead. Michael Jackson wanted Whitney Houston/Diana Ross/or Barbara Striesand for "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" - Clive said no on Whitney's behalf because he wanted a Whitney solo song to kick off her second project, Barbra said she was too old, and who knows why Diana turned him down. He used Seidah Garrett (who co-wrote "Man In The Mirror") instead. "I Have Nothing" was written for Patti Labelle - she turned it down. "How Many Times, How Many Lies" was recorded for her 2002 "Just Whitney..." album. The song didn't make the cut, and Diane Warren gave it to the Pussycat Dolls. They even used her vocal as their demo. "Heartbreak Hotel" was written for TLC, who turned it down. Whitney also turned down a bunch of Disney songs in the 90s notably "Colors Of The Wind" Vanessa was perfect for Colors of the wind. It ended up in the right person's hands.

Not really a rejection but, Hero was written by Mariah for Gloria Estefan for a soundtrack of a movie, but Tommy forced Mariah to record the song on her own cos the song was too good to be given to someone else.

I'm pretty sure Christina Milian only turned down S.O.S. because she wanted Dre to do the whole album. Amazing woman.

Not exactly a huge hit or anything, but... Selena Gomez & the Scene's "Who Says" and Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper" were both originally offered to Jordin Sparks. I believe Jordin wanted "Who Says," but Selena released her version first. As for "Skyscraper," Demi used Jordin's original background vocals in her version. The Veronicas' "This Love" was originally meant for Ke$ha. (It was a hit in Australia. ) Also, Miranda Cosgrove's "Disgusting" was originally a Ke$ha song, but didn't make the cut for Animal, and was given to Cosgrove with some lyric changes. Ke$ha's versions of both songs can be found on the Internet. Also for Miranda, "Daydream" was originally recorded by Avril Lavigne, supposedly for her Let Go album, but didn't make the cut and was given to Miranda eight years later. Yes, I know "Disgusting" and "Daydream" weren't even singles, but it's still interesting.

I found out yesterday that Daydream was cowritten by Avril with Chantal Kreviazuk. I had no idea it was recorded by someone else.

"Mirror Mirror" was turned down by The Pointer Sisters management > Top 10 hit for Diana Ross "Tied Up in Promises" was recorded by Stevie Nicks (the demo is out there) . Top 40 hit for Olivia Newton-John Epic wanted "Voices Carry" for Cyndi Lauper, but Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday) held on and it became a Top 10 hit. "Ain't Nobody" was intended for "Thriller" but went to Chaka Khan/Rufus (Thank Goodness)

Biggie's 'Who Shot Ya' was originally for Mary J Blige's My Life album, with Biggie to be featured on it. It was deemed too hard for an R&B album at the time. How times have changed. Its definitely R&B for Monica.

It was definitely Under My Skin and, at one point, it was even considered to be the first single. For some reason (Avril thought it was too poppy?) they ended up ditching the song entirely instead though. I remember being angry at the time because Don't Tell Me was so radio unfriendly in my opinion and Daydream was so much more radio friendly. Now, I do agree DayDream is a little poppy for Avril especially with the image she had at that point and I love Don't Tell Me. **Too much information no one asked for**

"Nobody Wants To Be Lonely" was originally written for Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood, but they passed on it and it eventually made its way to Ricky Martin & Christina Aguilera.

Just thought of one: Faith Evan's "I Love You" was offered to J.Lo but she turned it down. Faith confirmed this in an interview on 106th & Park, and Lopez is credited as one of the co-writers on the song.
Also: "Gold Digger" was originally offered to Shawnna lol Patti Labelle turned down "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here". Cliff Richard and Donna Summer turned down "What's Love Got To Do With It?".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boy Meets Girl - Waiting For A Star to Fall Originally written for Whitney Houston, but Arista rejected the song. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also rejected by Belinda Carlisle after Whitney. MCA insisted that she record it for Heaven on Earth, but she didn't like the song and refused to include it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Faith Hill - There You'll Be Originally offered to Celine Dion. She turned it down fearing it would be labeled as "My Heart Will Go On Part 2." The song later was nominated for an Academy Award. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can't say I blame her, because that's basically what they tried to do with it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vanessa Williams - COlors of the Wind Originally turned down by Whitney Houston --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to Wiki, she did later cover it (as one of many to do so). "Ain't Nobody" was intended for "Thriller" but went to Chaka Khan/Rufus (Thank Goodness) Technically not a rejection; Quincy Jones wanted it for Thriller, but Rufus's Hawk Wolinski had already promised it to Russ Titelman (producer of Stompin' at the Savoy).

Cliff Richard and Donna Summer turned down "What's Love Got To Do With It?". British group Bucks Fizz recorded it in February of '84. Member Jay Aston wanted to sing it, but oddly enough, was told by their producer that the song wasn't suitable for a female vocal (yes, Aston is female), so it was instead sung by Bobby G. According to Aston, their original demo was similar to the style that Tina would later do, but their finished version is quite different. They were going to include it on their I Hear Talk album, but shelved it when Tina released it first. It later turned up on a re-issue of Are You Ready in 2000. Wiki mentions Cliff Richard's rejection, but not Donna Summer's.

Peter Cetera's "The Next Time I Fall" was intended to be a duet with Vonda Shepard. The song went to Amy Grant (who was more known) instead.

Another oldie. "Sugar Sugar" was offered to The Monkees. Davy Jones said they turned the song down cause they were looking for a more mature sound. The song (recorded by "The Archies") ended up being the #1 song of 1969.
