jazzy- in original form, where Madonna didn't add anything lyrically or musically, yeah, "Holiday" would be the instance that another act turned down a track and she ended up recording it.

* "Like a Virgin": Bill Kelly wrote it for no one specific; it was his own experiences that inspired the track. He recorded a demo and had a WB A&R guy listen to it. The A&R guy played it for Madonna and the rest is history. LOL, nice portmanteau of that songwriting team. It's Billy Steinberg, actually. And actually, there is a second one in that group. According to Bruce Gaitsch, Michael Jackson did turn down "La Isla Bonita". It was mentioned a few pages back but the poster didn't specify that he'd rejected it.

Oops- yes, I meant Billy Steinberg in that instance. :) Tom Kelly was the co-writer and the one who supposedly did the demo.
I clarified on the last page that Madonna and Pat Leonard rewrote the lyrics to "La Isla Bonita" after MJ turned down the original incarnation of it.

"How Will I Know" originally meant for Janet's Control album. Later went to Whitney. "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)" meant for Aretha, and later went to Natalie. Stupid move as it peaked at #6 on the Hot 100 and ended Aretha's consecutive wins for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance "It's A Shame" written by Stevie Wonder and shopped around Motown, later went to The Spinners. "I wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat me so Bad?" meant for Patrice Rushen, later recorded by Prince. How Will I Know by Janet Jackson...would have smashed even harder :'(

^How so, when Janet scored one No. 1 from Control, while Whitney had four from her album? :)

"How Do I Live" | The way I heard it was the song was rerecorded with Trisha Yearwood because record execs didn't think the song + movie ("Con Air" w/ Nicholas Cage) was age appropriate for LeAnn Rhymes, who was still underage at the time.
I still SMH @ Christina Milian to this day. Not only did she pass up "S.O.S." but she also passed up "Pon De Replay." Rihanna should send her a thank you card, lol. Christina dedicated her whole cd ("So Amazing") to her cheating ex, Nick Cannon, which was a fail.

Taylor Dayne's stunning 1990 masterpiece 'Love Will Lead You Back' immediately comes to mind.
Diane Warren stated that she had intended for the song to be presented to Whitney Houston until Arista Records CEO Clive Davis decreed that he wanted Ms. Dayne to record the song.
The result became her only #1 single in a year overloaded with exceptional singles from several top-notch female vocalists.

Another Taylor Dayne song, different one this time.
Shadoe Stevens related on AT40's Top 100 of 1990 that Diane Warren had originally written "I'll Be Your Shelter" for Tina Turner. Technically Tina herself didn't reject it - despite assurances from Tina's label that they would use the song on her upcoming album (most likely Foreign Affair, I'm thinking), it didn't come to pass. Diane was angry about that, and around that time, happened to come in contact with Taylor.
The rest - another Top 5 smash for her - is history. :)

Both Busta's What It Is and Britney Spears Boys was originally meant for Janet's All For You album. Michael Jackson rejected Senorita, Take It From Here, Let's Take a Ride, Last Night and Nothing Else; which all eventually were reworked for Justin Timberlake. From Usher's catalog, his team rejected U Don't Have to Call and I Don't Know.

Way ahead of their time. DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love was originally meant for Rihanna but was ultimately given to Usher. Also I don't know if it was posted but Since U Been Gone was given to both Hilary Duff and P!nk before Kelly C. got it. Gold Digger by Kanye West was first given to Shawnna but she didn't like the subject matter.

YES. They still sound so fresh. I can see Duff&Pink doing SUBG. I can't see Shawnna doing GD, but it could've possibly made her more hotter and gave her another number 1 song.

J Holiday's 'Bed' was originally written by The Dream for Chris Brown. CB didn't reject it though he actually was really disappointed he didn't get it. The Dream felt it was lyrically too risque for an 18 year old at the time and didn't want to have to deal with label executives forcing him to change the lyrics of the song which Dream didn't wanna do.
I do think Chris could have done serious justice to the song if he did receive it though and it might have been even more successful than Holiday's version. Chris and Dream do seem to get along now since Dream has done multiple records with him since, including the most recent 'Birthday Cake Remix' with Rihanna.

The only song Chris has done with The-Dream was You and that was after a lot of apologizing on The-Dream's part to Chris Brown for giving the song away. Chris Brown wrote his own sections on Birthday Cake.

RenĂ© & Ăngela offered "My First Love" to Janet Jackson for her 1982 debut album, among several other songs they offered her (including the Top 10 R&B hit "Young Love" and Top 20 R&B hit "Say You Do"). The label rejected the song. RenĂ© & Ăngela released the song from their own album, Rise, in 1983 and the song went to #12 on the R&B chart. Despite initially missing the Top 10 there, the song has gone on to become an R&B classic and was turned into a #4 R&B hit by Avant and Keke Wyatt in 2000.
I'm kind of glad the song was rejected for Janet's debut album. She was 15 when she was recording that album, while RenĂ© Moore and Ăngela Winbush were both in their 20s. Coming from a teenager, the song would have come off as a puppy love ballad, while I think RenĂ© & Ăngela were able to infuse more maturity and depth into it.

Rita Ora turned down Cheryl's new hot single "Call My Name." I'm not surprised. I can't imagine her singing that and it would have made the Rihanna comparisons worse.

Wasn't "Jesus, Take the Wheel" also offered to Faith Hill for her Fireflies album?
Also, Carrie's "Before He Cheats" was offered to Gretchen Wilson, who turned it down.

Probably already mentioned but, HIAM = a Teenage Dream reject. Quite a lot of Britney's hits seem to have been passed on to her from other artists.

Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time
Originally offered to TLC who turned it down.I think this song will never ever fit TLC's style of music.. Pussycat Dolls - Don't Cha
Recorded by Tori Alamaze. The single flopped and Tori was dropped from the label. The song was also offered to The Sugababes and to Paris Hilton. Both turned it down.LOL! can't imagine sugababes singing this.. I'm do a cartwheel as well if Paris does this!LOL! ___________________________________________ These blogs keep the fire of music burning in me: www.scarysquids.comwww.audiomasteringman.com
