^In reality, the people who watch stuff like the VMAs are more likely to make instant music purchases than Super Bowl viewers (especially if SB viewers are, shall we say, a bit intoxicated). The Super Bowl is about the game; the halftime show is secondary, and music purchases aren't in the big picture.
So, yeah, it's great exposure and all to have 100m+ watching a halftime show, but, in reality, that huge number of viewers isn't any more beneficial, comparatively, to sales than some other outlets that have a lot less viewers. And we've seen that year after year, with post-Super-Bowl sales.

Yeah, "Blurred Lines" still saw a sales increase, but not as big as others, which is understandable given how much "Blurred Lines" has already sold.
