Whereas, in other cases (like The Fame, 21, Jagged Little Pill) the highest week sales of their respective albums weren't even 5% of their total.... Now that's consistency.

This is incredible for Wayne and he completely overshadowed WTT. I hope he can make 3milli, but 2milli is all but guaranteed. I do wonder how many more singles will they push, though.

It's like when Kanye "only" got 957,000. Oh well, now I hope he has the longetivity Carter III had.

Word of mouth is going to hurt him a bit in the long run due to mixed reviews (whereas Carter III is considered his best, Carter IV was getting trashed by some as soon as it leaked; some feel it is much weaker than the rest of the Carter series). But I agree that 2x platinum should not be a problem for him to reach at all...he'll probably top out at 2.5m. I'm also interested in seeing how many singles they put out, as it seems he has more rhythmic/pop stuff on this album than on previous ones.

People will forget about Amazon deciding to sell her album cheaper soon. Everyone who is close to this stuff always thinks memories last forever and they never do. Like, does anyone remember or still harp on when Mariah Carey used free downloads to get a #1 quicker than she would have with WBT? Or when JLo caused the change in remix rules? I am sure some here do, but I doubt anyone would say they are "still desperately trying to live it down". I know someone will shoot back with "those weren't a big deal!!!!!!" but if you had been here when they happened they were and just as many "cheating" accusations were being thrown around. Come back in five years and let me know if she is living in shame from it. It's not about "shame". She shouldn't feel shame about it, business is business. If her company thinks it's profitable, there's nothing we can say. The reason we will never forget about it and will keep bringing it up as long as her career continues, is that her place in the "1 million debut week" club feels undeserved. It's an insult to the other artists and companies who achieved the same feat with full prices. Whenever Gaga's name mentioned in a "Top 20 - one week sales" chart, an asterisk will be needed and we will be here to provide it

^Well, new titles often ARE discounted in their first week of release, just not to the extent of 99 cents.

new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/74408/week-ending-sept-5-2011-albums-weezy-does-it/Week Ending Sept. 5, 2011. Albums: Weezy Does ItLil Wayne's Tha Carter IV sold a whopping 964,000 copies in its first week. That's the second biggest one-week sales tally of the year. It trails only Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which sold a discount-boosted 1,108,000 copies in May. It's the heftiest tally for a rap or hip-hop album since Tha Carter III debuted in June 2008 with sales of 1,006,000. Tha Carter IV is already the fifth best-selling album so far this year, trailing only albums by Adele, Lady Gaga, Mumford & Sons and Jason Aldean. It's the year's best-selling rap album, surpassing Watch The Throne by Jay-Z and Kanye West, which has sold 787K copies in its first four weeks. Throne ranks #7 for the year-to-date. Lil Wayne released two studio albums in between the third and fourth installments of Tha Carter. The new album has already outsold them both. Rebirth has sold 775K copies to date. I Am Not A Human Being has sold 953,000. Rap is responsible for the last three #1 albums on The Billboard 200. Tha Carter IV follows Watch The Throne and Game's The R.E.D. Album. This marks the first time that rap has accounted for three or more consecutive #1 albums since late 2004, when Jay-Z/Linkin Park's Collision Course, Ludacris' The Red Light District, 2Pac's Loyal To The Game and Eminem's Encore were #1 in succession. Tha Carter IV sold 362K digital copies, which is the second largest one-week tally in digital history. Born This Way sold 662K digital copies in its first week. Watch The Throne is in third place, with sales of 321K digital copies in one week. Thus, the three biggest one-week tallies in digital history have all been recorded in the past four months. A growth area in the music business! Sixteen of the 18 tracks on the deluxe version of Tha Carter IV are listed on Hot Digital Songs. Here's another striking stat: Seventeen of the 18 tracks are flagged by Amazon.com for explicit content. (The sole exception: the hit "How To Love"). Tha Carter is one of the most successful series of albums by a single artist in music history. All four installments have reached the top five on The Billboard 200. Other successful long-running series include Jay-Z's The Blueprint (the first three installments have all reached #1), Rod Stewart's The Great American Songbook (all five installments reached the top five), Barry Manilow's The Greatest Songs Of The... (the first three volumes went top five), Johnny Cash's American Recordings (the last two installments reached the top three), Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series (the last three installments reached the top 20), Jill Scott's Words And Sounds (the last two volumes made the top five) and, back in the day, Ella Fitzgerald's Song Book (two volumes made the top 15). Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You debuts at #2, becoming the band's sixth consecutive studio album to make the top five. That's the band's entire studio output since 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik put them in the big time. This is the band's third studio album in a row to debut at #1 or #2. I'm With You sold 229K copies in its first week, which is the heftiest total for an album debuting shy of the #1 spot since Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday debuted at #2 in November with first-week sales of 375K. This constitutes the second-best sales week of 2011 for a rock album. Foo Fighters' Wasting Light sold 235K copies when it debuted at #1 in April. I'm With You sold 104K digital copies. This marks the first time that two albums have sold 100K or more digital copies during any one week. I'm With You enters the U.K. album chart at #1. It's the band's fourth #1 in the U.K., following By The Way, Live In Hyde Park (which wasn't released in the U.S.) and Stadium Arcadium. David Guetta's Nothing But The Beat debuts at #5. The French producer and DJ first charted in 2009 with One Love, which debuted and peaked at #70. (A Frank Sinatra compilation in 2008 had a very similar title: Nothing But The Best.) Jake Owen's Barefoot Blue Jean Night debuts at #6. It opens at #1 on Top Country Albums. I doubt that it was intentional, but the title could be seen as a sly nod to Jean Knight, whose "Mr. Big Stuff" was one of the sassiest hits of 1971. (If you don't know it, You Tube it. Right after you finish Chart Watch.) Adele's "Someone Like You" leaps from #11 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs in the wake of her tender performance of the song on the VMAs. The song reaches the top spot in its 28th week on the chart, the slowest climb since Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" finally chugged into the top spot in its 31st week in March 2010. Will it leap into the top 10 or maybe even the top five (from #19 last week) on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums. 1. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV, 964,000. This new entry is Lil Wayne's eighth top 10 album, counting an album with Hot Boys and a collabo with Birdman. Sixteen songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Mirror" (featuring Bruno Mars), which debuts at #6. 2. Red Hot Chili Peppers, I'm With You, 229,000. This new entry is the band's sixth consecutive studio album to make the top five. "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" drops from #41 to #74 in its seventh week. 3. Adele, 21, 154,000. The former #1 album holds at #3 in its 28th week. It has been in the top five the entire time. Five songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Someone Like You," which leaps from #11 to #1. 4. Jay Z/Kanye West, Watch The Throne, 80,000. The former #1 album drops from #2 to #4 in its fourth week. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Otis" (featuring Otis Redding) jumps from #24 to #22. "Ni**as In Paris" drops from #77 to #89. 5. David Guetta, Nothing But The Beat, 56,000. This new entry is Guetta's first top 10 album. Five songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Turn Me On" (featuring Nicki Minaj), which debuts at #19. 6. Jake Owen, Barefoot Blue Jean Night, 55,000. This new entry is Owen's first top 10 album. His previous best mark was 2009's Easy Does It, which reached #13. This is #1 on Top Country Albums. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" holds at #23. "Anywhere With You" debuts at #104. 7. Beyonce, 4, 39,000. The former #1 album rebounds from #12 to #7 in its 10th week. B's performance and baby bump reveal on the VMAs triggered the resurgence. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Three songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Love On Top," which vaults from #135 to #10. 8. Game, The R.E.D. Album, 39,000. The former #1 album drops from #1 to #8 in its second week. It's the steepest fall from the top spot since Amos Lee's Mission Bell plummeted from #1 to #26 in February. The album has sold 137K copies in its first two weeks. 9. Barbra Streisand, What Matters Most, 37,000. The album drops from #4 to #9 in its second week. The album has sold 105K copies in its first two weeks. 10. Various Artists, Now 39, 36,000. The album drops from #6 to #10 in its fourth week. The album has sold 253K copies in its first four weeks. Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Pistol Annies' Hell On Heels drops from #5 to #22, Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines drops from #7 to #11, Muppets: The Green Album drops from #8 to #21, Jason Alden's My Kinda Party drops from #9 to #13 and Eric Church's Chief drops from #10 to #15. Adele's 2008 album 19 jumps from #25 to #17. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 22nd week. It's #27 on Nielsen SoundScan's running tally of the best-selling albums for the year-to-date. Pop Quiz: Only other artist, besides Adele, has two albums among the 40 best-sellers for the year-to-date. Who? Answer below. Lenny Kravitz lands his seventh top 20 album as Black & White America debuts at #17. Kravitz first cracked the top 20 with 1993's Are You Gonna Go My Way. (This may be the first time that two concurrent top 20 albums feature photos of the artists as children on their covers.) Glen Campbell's Ghost On The Canvas bows at #24. This is Campbell's highest-charting album since Southern Nights hit #22 in 1977. Campbell was one of the hottest country crossover stars of the late ‘60s and early '70s. From 1967 to 1970, he had nine consecutive top 30 albums on The Billboard 200. Campbell has gone public with his diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer's. Victorious: Music From The Hit TV Show drops from #32 to #41 in its fifth week. It's the #1 soundtrack for the fifth week...Country Strong drops from #45 to #83 in its 32nd week. It's the top-ranking soundtrack to a theatrically-released movie for the 17th week. Young The Giant's eponymous album jumps from #130 to #42 in its second week. This was the only rock act to perform on the VMAs...Tyler, the Creator's Goblins rebounds from #102 to #48 in its 10th week. This is the album's highest ranking since its second week on the chart in May. Tyler, the Creator was named Best New Artist at the VMAs. Quiz Answer: Justin Bieber is the only artist besides Adele with two albums among the 40 best-sellers for the year-to-date. Never Say Never-The Remixes is #10. My World 2.0 is #18. The Help was #1 at the box-office for the third straight weekend. It's the first movie to rank #1 for three weekends since Inception in July 2010. Alas, the soundtrack is not doing well. It drops from #106 to #175 in its sixth week. Louie Giglio's Indescribable jumps to #1 on Top Music Videos. The Contemporary Christian video was first released in 2008. Coming Attractions: George Strait's Here For A Good Time is expected to be next week's top new entry. Also due: Lindsey Buckingham's Seeds We Sow, Grace Jones' Hurricane and The Rapture's In The Grace Of Your Love.

Such a tease that he gave digital singles sales positions but not sales totals.

^Probably because he's aware that there are readers who follow the airplay info and can do those calculations. Such a difference compared to the pre-leaked-info days. I remember watching CNN Showbiz Today back in the 90s each Thursday, glued to the TV when the top 10 countdown came on. :)
Billboard will be publishing the digital figures soon enough, though.

Yah, for the people here who check iTunes updates every hour I can't imagine how they would have behaved in the mid-90s when you often had to wait until the print issue of Billboard hit the newsstands to see things like airplay and sales positions.

It's an insult to the other artists and companies who achieved the same feat with full prices. Don't even play that card. So were you OK that Katy Perry released remixes of her singles ET and LFN to get to #1 on the Hot 100, or is that an insult to every other artist who has "achieved the same feat" the right way

^Well, the Kanye West "remix" was released around the same time the track hit radio. The LFN "remix" did boost the track in that first week, but then it held the top spot for a second week, when sales of the "remix" plummeted.
Some labels do pull out all the stops, but the albums thing was notable, regardless of whose album it was, because it was a FULL album, at 99 cents, not just one track.
Some Hip Hop DX info:
1. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV: 964,000 (965,000 to date)
4. Jay-Z & Kanye West, Watch The Throne: 80,000 (787,000) 5. David Guetta, Nothing But The Beat: 56,000
7. Beyonce, 4: 39,000 (739,000) 8. Game, The R.E.D. Album: 39,000 (137,000)
19. Eminem & Royce Da 5'9 (Bad Meets Evil), Hell: The Sequel: 18,000 (499,000) (HG Note: Half-a-Milli Next Week!)
46. Tyler, The Creator, Goblin: 9,700 (118,000)
124. Tech N9ne, All 6's & 7's: 3,700 (137,000)
165. Glasses Malone, Beach Cruiser: 2,700
191. Slim Thug Presents Boss Hogg Outlawz, Serve & Collect Part 3 (Immahogg): 2,400

MTV VMAs Boost Adele, Beyonce on Billboard 200; RHCP Scores Big Debutwww.billboard.com/#/news/mtv-vmas-boost-adele-beyonce-on-billboard-1005340772.storyAs previously reported, Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" lights up the top slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart as it arrives with 964,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But Weezy's achievement is a mere chunk of the chart news this week, as we take a look at the rest of the top 10 selling albums and songs. On the Billboard 200, Red Hot Chili Peppers' "I'm With You" bows at No. 2 with 229,000, marking the band's sixth top 10 album. The rock act's last release, 2006's "Stadium Arcadium," became its first No. 1 set when it launched with 442,000. Red Hot Chili Peppers Top U.K. Album Chart; Dolly Parton Debuts High Adele's "21" posts a whopping 88% sales gain, though it holds at No. 3 (154,000) thanks to the singer's performance on the Aug. 28 MTV Video Music Awards. On the show, the diva sang the album's latest single, "Someone Like You," which also flies 11-1 on the Digital Songs chart with 275,000 (up 191%). She bumps "Moves Like Jagger," by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, down 1-3 with 207,000 (down 5%). Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" is sandwiched between the two, standing steady at No. 2 with 218,000 (up 12%). Other obvious gainer thanks to the VMA show is Beyonce, who announced she was pregnant during her performance of "Love On Top." Her "4" album returns to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 with 39,000 (jumping 12-7; up 87%) and "Love" debuts at No. 10 on Digital Songs with 113,000 (up 803%). This marks the first time the "4" album has posted a weekly sales increase since its arrival. Jay-Z and Beyonce Are 'Ecstatic' About Pregnancy, Says The-Dream Elsewhere on the Billboard 200 albums chart, David Guetta's "Nothing But the Beat" bows at No. 5 with 58,000, earning the superstar DJ his first top 10 set. His last effort, "One Love," debuted and peaked at No. 70 in 2009 off an 8,000 start. Country singer Jake Owen starts at No. 6 with his third album, "Barefoot Blue Jean Night," selling 55,000. It also debuts at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart -- his first leader there. His last effort, 2009's "Easy Does It," took a bow at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 with 23,000. Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Watch the Throne" slips 2-4 (80,000; down 16%), Game's "The R.E.D. Album" falls 1-8 (39,000; down 60%), Barbra Streisand's "What Matters Most" drops 4-9 (37,000; down 46%) and the "Now 39" compilation descends 6-10 (36,000; down 18%). Outside the top 10 on the albums chart, we also see VMA gains by an assortment of performers and winners. Lady Gaga, who opened the show with "You and I," posts a 20% gain with "Born This Way" (13-14). Bruno Mars, who celebrated the late Amy Winehouse in a tribute segment, rises 37-32 with "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (12,000; up 31%). Young the Giant, the only rock act that performed on the show, flies 130-42 with its self-titled album (10,000; up 189%). Tyler, the Creator, who surprised many by winning the best new artist trophy, jumps 102-48 with his "Goblin" album (10,000; up 133%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, there is a ton of movement in the top 10. Aside from the big jumps from Adele and Beyonce, two more singles hit the top 10 for the first time. Cobra Starship's "You Make Me Feel" (featuring Sabi), rises 13-5 with 159,000 (up 75%) while Lil Wayne's "Mirror" (featuring Bruno Mars), debuts at No. 6 with 149,000. The former was performed on the VMA pre-show, while Wayne closed out the awards with a rendition of "How to Love." Cobra's new album, "Night Shades," also debutes at No. 50 on the Billboard 200 with 9,000. Rihanna's "Cheers (Drink to That)" posts a 9% sales gain (with 143,000 sold), but gets pushed back 5-7, while LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" also slides despite a gain, falling 4-8 (141,000; up 5%). Lady Gaga's "You And I" charges 8-4 with 175,000 (up 61%). That's the best sales week for any Gaga song since "The Edge of Glory" debuted at No. 1 with 266,000 on the May 28 chart. Rounding out the rest of the Digital Songs top 10 is Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts" (featuring Adam Levine), which falls 3-9 with 140,000 (down 4%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 4) totaled 6.65 million units, up 29% compared to the sum last week (5.14 million) and up 27% compared to the comparable sales week of 2010 (5.22 million). Year to date album sales stand at 206.57 million, up 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (200.55 million). It is the 15th week in a row where year-to-date album volume is greater than the same time in the prior year. Digital track sales this past week totaled 22.43 million downloads, down less than 1% compared to last week (22.44 million) and up 15% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (19.44 million). Year to date track sales are at 868.33 million, up 11% compared to the same total at this point last year (781.81 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: Sara Bareilles' "Kaleidoscope Heart" debuted at No. 1 with 90,000, pushing the previous week's leader, Disturbed's "Asylum," down to No. 5 with 57,000 (down 68%).

^Just think how dull albums-chart activity would have been had Adele not released an album.

Should be able to have a year-on-year increase next week as it was the lowest sales week ever last year (4.83 mil) The week after Labour Day is typically one of the lowest sales weeks of the year, expect big drops for the whole top 3.

This week is the most interesting chart week I've ever witnessed: Lil Wayne, Adele, Katy's end of top ten streak = the first airplay #1 to miss top ten on Hot 100 like ever... Fantastic.

Why is that "fantastic"? LOL It's not like fifth single "Last Friday Night" has not performed smashingly- No. 1 Hot 100, No. 1 Hot 100 Airplay, No. 1 Digital Songs, No. 1 Mainstream Top 40, etc. etc.
And her top 10 streak looks pretty safe for some time to come.

The week "Hips Don't Lie" went #1 on airplay, it was #16 on the Hot 100, it wasn't released to iTunes til two weeks afterwards. I can't think of any other examples besides the ones not allowed to chart in the mid to late 90's

If the current No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay already didn't spend time in the top 10 (11 weeks)- and at No. 1- it would be more of a story.

The lowest peaking recent airplay #1 I can remember is Ne-Yo's "Closer" -- I think it only made #7 on the H100.

Fantastic referred to the amount of action. As a chart nerd I love everything unusual, no matter who are involved. And I was talking about the consecutive weeks in top ten, not consecutive top ten hits.

I know what you meant, spoilt- when I said top 10 streak, I was referring to the weeks-in-the-top-10 streak.
Wonder if the charts will appear again this week- it was a treat to have them the last couple of weeks. :)
