#20 on the Billboars 200 :(
had they move the album two weeks up, it could have gone top 5 or 10.

It only sold 3,000 less copies than "Sci-Fi Crimes," though. This album was released at the wrong time of year if they were targeting a high debut.

Damn, that's brutal that they only got #20 with that. You'd think it was the '90s again! Oh, December...

Yeah, it's all about timing. Cake got a #1 album with 44,000 earlier this year.

I don't know why bands keep releasing albums in December. You'd think they'd learn their lesson by now.

I don't know why bands keep releasing albums in December. You'd think they'd learn their lesson by now. Well I think it's harder to score a high debut on the BB200 then. But you also have to figure financially it's a good time to release albums because they can be Christmas presents. My guess is Chevelle suffered 10ish spots on the chart but may gain thousands in sales over the month from this decision because more people are in CD purchasing mode now than at any other time. Accolades vs. money...you could argue the benefits of either.

Or you can argue financially it's a bad time to release an album because people are usually buying better things for Christmas gifts than an album. Has any artist really done phenomenally well during December with a release? I really can't remember any in recent memory.

Her albums have been released typically in October and November, well before it would matter.

I don't know why bands keep releasing albums in December. You'd think they'd learn their lesson by now. Sales matter for albums, not peaks. Albums sell more when released around the holidays, full stop. The album would have sold less the first week despite a likely higher debut if it had been pushed back a month.

Honestly, can anyone tell me a single album that was released in December that ended up doing well? I think people use December more for the albums that either they've been waiting on all year, the ones earmarked for Grammy success, or God help us all, Christmas albums. If anyone can give me an example of an album that dropped in December that did well, I'll give up this line of questioning, but so far no one has. I think that's telling.

Blige released 3 consecutive studio albums in December, starting with the 3x Platinum 'The Breakthrough.' It's worth nothing that all 3 were released in the 2nd half of the month: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_J._Blige_discography#Studio_albums

I don't follow pop that closely if at all, so okay, I concede this. Give me a rock release now.

You have to also concede that while it hurt Chevelle's opening week position, the fact that rock artists don't generally dare to release albums this late in the year pretty much opened the gates for Chevelle to have a lead single with very little competition from other artists' lead single. And now look...I'm pretty sure Chevelle has never had this many consecutive weeks at #1 on any format. And this success at active rock radio is with a song that's fairly average compared to their other singles.
Granted, radio is not as important as album sales, but you figure it gives them an advantage that they can just dominate the radio landscape at this time of the year, as much as their opening position on the BB200 was negatively impacted.

It's pop to me. And This Is War took two years to go gold versus A Beautiful Lie, which took one year to go platinum. That's not a very good example.

This Is War only entered at #18 with 67,000 copies sold upon its release, so that's similar to Chevelle. If the right singles are picked from this album and they experience longevity, Hats... could go Gold in a year or two also. And pen, you're acting as if "-is" was added to the end of your username. (Mary J. Blige is R&B by the way.)
