Monica has lasted in the industry for 16 years with a notable R&B or Pop hit from each CD-except her 2006 release. That says it all.

The big problem for me is that Monica always steered left of actual pop/r&b domination. In her first era she was eclipsed by Brandy and even Aaliyah who both outsold her. Second, eclipsed by Brandy again in '98 and when she tried to comeback on the scene in 2003 it was all about Ashanti/Beyonce. 2006 it was Beyonce again. She's had a successful r&b career, but never managed to stand out above her peers especially with lengthy gaps in b/w recordings. No one cares if she was outshone by anyone else in any particular year. No one is asking if she was ever the biggest artist in any particular year. Her career overall is more impressive than Ashanti's. It seems like 3/4 of people think Monica was more successful in her career so time to call this battle for Monica.

What if Ashanti comes back with an R&B hit and gold album ala Monica. Would Monica still have the more impressive career? I think most would be changing their vote if she did.

Nope, I agree with blackoutx that this last era along with artist preference may have clouded some people's judgement, but Ashanti's 4 eras combined still outshine all of Monica's. For Monica to have been out as long as she did she really should have outsold Ashanti. You would also think she would have received more industry awards and nominations than she wound up receiving.

So an R&B hit and gold album is what's making Monica have the more impressive career? Lol okay.
Had this poll been done a year ago, everybody would be calling Monica a has been and she wouldn't be getting the praise she is now in this thread. Ashanti would have won it easily based on name recognition alone.

So an R&B hit and gold album is what's making Monica have the more impressive career? Lol okay. No hon. It was two R&B hits including a 7 week #1 R&B hit AND... Neither were that successful, so this fanwar seems a little pointless. ??? ??? ??? Monica has 3 Hot 100 #1s as a lead artist, 12 Top 10 R&B hits (including 6 #1s) spanning a period of 15 years, 7 Platinum singles, 2 3x Platinum albums, another album that sold over a million, and another that went Gold. If that ain't successful....

Monica was more successful, of course, but Ashanti has, for some reason, had more staying power in terms of a recognizable name and career.

Ashanti is a flash in the pan.
Monica is proving to be a career artist.
Ashanti would be lucky to appear on some D-list reality show.
Monica will continue to rack up hits on the R&B charts and tour theaters in the US.

People forget how HUGE Ashanti was during her peak. And I don't blame them, because she came and went very quickly. Monica has never been as big of a sensation that Ashanti was briefly circa 2002 but it doesn't take much digging to see that Monica has sustained a longer, way more consistent career. Ashanti is sort of a joke nowadays while Monica is just cementing her status as a respected R&B singer, something Ashanti will never be.

Considering all the arguments made on this thread are over 10 years old this really should have been a new thread...

Looking at Ashanti’s Top 5 biggest Billboard hits in that infographic and it truly pops out that she’s just the featured act on 4 out of 5 of them.
(Including a strange credit for “Into You” when Tamia was on the hit version.)

Okay this is an interesting comparison.
I’d rather have Monica’s talent but Ashanti’s career.
Imagine had JLo not stolen those hooks.
