Maybe it's a separate entity than the album itself but The Fame's impact on the charts as well as the performance of the singles, and its influence on many of the OTHER stuff on the charts 2008-2010 I think allows it to have blockbuster/landmark status at least in the commercial/(pop) cultural sense. Yes, i also think that Stripped was the album which put Xtina into a high status as an artist, too bad the album didn't hit #1. Also, GGGB was Rihanna's biggest album with multiple hits and put her into a high status as an artist, and yet, it didn't even hit #1. About Ray Of Light, it's also a shame it didn't hit #1 cos it's considered as her best album in years (while Hard Candy hit #1?). HC didn't have the Titanic Soundtrack to deal with. Again, chart peaks don't matter for albums, it's the actual sales that count.

If adele's team plays their cards right, 19 could end up at double platnium :O

Adele is a monster! Almost 4 mil with 21 and 1.5 mil with 19, 5.5 mil in 9 months only in us.

Well, Private Parts the soundtrack to Howard Stern's movie- he only appeared on two of the album's tracks. ;)
More than likely, 19 eventually will be certified double platinum.

Even singles peaks don't really tell the story of a track's success- rather, week-to-week chart performance does. No. 1 album peaks have a lot to do with timing (commercial appeal also has to be there, naturally). Ray of Light scanned 371,000 (at the time, the highest first-week female figure in SoundScan's seven-year history)- and it was No. 2 behind the Titanic juggernaut. Meanwhile, both American Life and Hard Candy topped the chart with 241,000 and 280,000, respectively. Erotica missed the top spot by 3,000 units; had it been released the following week, it would have ranked No. 1. Absolutely true. Let's not forget Shania and COO and it's amazing run or Eminem's Friday release that denied Shania's GH the #1 spot (with 530K). Longevity is all that matters.

Has this ever happened before, a current album's success driving older album to sell so relatively much for so long?

"Fearless" didn't exactly drive "Taylor Swift", but the latter probably sold a good part of the additional 1.5 million copies after the former was released based on the success of the follow up.

^I think that may have happened more in the past, and also was dependent on whether the first album was an initial blockbuster or not. After the release of Like a Virgin, for instance, Madonna's first album- which did well but wasn't a blockbuster- stayed on the charts for some time thereafter. Even though there were no more singles, the success of LAV probably kept that album going. Some acts- like Madonna, Adele, Damita Jo Jackson, etc.- see their breakout success beyond their debut albums.

So this week or next week, 21 will be past the 4 million mark. Including this week (Evanescence, Lauren Alaina, etc.), there was 11.5 weeks. 5.5m by 2012? 6m? This is incredible!

Black Friday and the week before Xmas will push '21' past 6 million by the end of the year. It's going to be a major Xmas gift.

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if '21' ends up #1 at some point during the holiday season. Can't wait to see how it holds up against other releases. I know it's a stretch, but imagine if she stayed in the top 5 for an entire year?

Black Friday and the week before Xmas will push '21' past 6 million by the end of the year. It's going to be a major Xmas gift. It sounds crazy but I 100% agree. In months gone by the big question mark was whether XL/Columbia could keep this album 'up there' for the crucial Xmas/Holiday selling season being as it's been out since February. It's clear they've done that so the question mark has disappeared and this album will IMO experience crazy sales in the run up to Xmas. PS as a matter of interest when was the last time an album sold 6 million in the US in a calendar year? Anyone know?

Yeah, but doesn't the Billboard year end on beginning of December, or is it only for singles?

Yeah, but doesn't the Billboard year end on beginning of December, or is it only for singles? People don't care about their parameters though, people are always only going to care about the calendar year when discussing what the highest selling albums of a year were. That's how SoundScan's year-end lists are compiled anyway.
