"Pumped Up Kicks" has been hanging around No. 3 in sales for weeks, and airplay has continued to rise. How does it 'deserve" to hit No. 2? I like the track and all, but I'm aware that has nothing to do with the charts. :)

Posted by Paul Grein in Chart WatchThree of the hottest female stars of the past two decades enter the Hot 100 with the latest singles from their #1 albums. Curiously, they debut in reverse order from the magnitude of their albums' hit-generating status. Beyonce's "Countdown" opens at #85, Britney Spears' "Criminal" bows at #92, and Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" starts at #94.
"Countdown" is the sixth song from Beyonce's 4 to crack the Hot 100, though she has yet to crack the top 10 with any of these releases. The two primary releases were "Run The World (Girls)," which peaked at #29, and "Best Thing I Never Had," which hit #16. She has also charted with "Love On Top" (#20), "1+1" (#57) and the current "Party" (featuring Andre 3000), which jumps from #95 to #87 in its second week.
If "Countdown" doesn't do the trick, I think they should pack it in on this album. This flurry of releases is starting to seem like a desperate bid to find a hit. People seem to be a little Beyonce-d out. It happens to every artist eventually. Beyonce should take a break from recording and have the assurance that her time will come around again.
Spears has been much more consistent with the hits from her album Femme Fatale. The first three singles all made the top 10. "Hold It Against Me" debuted at #1, "Till The World Ends" rose to #3 and "I Wanna Go" hit #7.
And Perry has had historic success with the hits from her album Teenage Dream. The first five singles all reached #1, matching Michael Jackson's record for the most #1 hits from one album. If "The One That Got Away" also hits #1, Perry will own the record outright. If not, as Capitol Records executives have explained, she'll still be on the radio with a current hit in the busiest sales season of the year.
Incidentally, Beyonce's "Countdown" isn't the first song with that title to make the Hot 100. Dave "Baby" Cortez had a chart hit with a song called "Count Down" in 1966. (Of course, true chart fans will always associate the word with Casey Kasem, thanks to his immortal segue, "Now, on with the countdown.")
"Young, Wild & Free" by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa featuring Bruno Mars debuts at #10. It's the first single from the movie Mac & Devin Go To High School, in which Snoop and Wiz Khalifa will co-star. "It's a great buddy film," Khalifa recently told The Juice at
www.billboard.com. "Snoop's the cool guy and I'm kind of the nerd."
Snoop has acted in many films, including such hits as Training Day and Starsky & Hutch.
"Young, Wild & Free" is the 12th top 10 hit for Snoop, the third for Wiz Khalifa and the seventh for Mars. Snoop has been the lead artist on exactly half of his top 10 hits and has been the featured artist on the other half, supporting Dr. Dre (twice), Chingy, the Pussycat Dolls, Akon and Katy Perry.
Adele's "Someone Like You" holds at #1 for the fourth week. "Rolling In The Deep" was #1 for seven weeks earlier this year. Adele is the first "lead artist" to spend 11 or more weeks at #1 in a calendar year since the Black Eyed Peas were on top for 26 weeks in 2009.
Adele co-wrote and co-produced "Someone Like You" with Dan Wilson. She also co-wrote "Rolling In The Deep" (with Paul Epworth), but she didn't co-produce it.
"Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon5 featuring Christina Aguilera holds at #2 for the third week following a four-week run at #1. Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" holds at #3 for the eighth week.
The last song to spend eight weeks at #3 (among songs that peaked at #3) was LL Cool J's "Hey Lover" in 1995-1996. Only other song has spent eight or more weeks peaking at #3: Real McCoy's "Another Night," which logged 11 weeks at #3 in 1994-1995.
"We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris jumps from #7 to #6 in its fourth week. This is Rihanna's 20th top 10 hit, which equals the number of top 10 hits amassed by the Supremes (with or without Diana Ross). It also ties the career totals of top 10 hits by Chicago and Les Paul (with or without Mary Ford).
"We Found Love" holds at #1 in the U.K. for the second straight week. It's Rihanna's sixth #1 in the U.K. It's Harris' third. The Scottish pop artist topped the U.K. chart on his own in 2009 with "I'm Not Alone" and as a featured artist in 2008 on Dizzee Rascal's "Dance With Me."
You may think that Calvin Harris is one lucky guy to get featured on a Rihanna single. He is, of course, but he earned the right: He wrote the song and produced the single.
Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.
1. Adele, "Someone Like You." The song holds at #1 for the fourth week in its 15th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (207K).
2. Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger." The former #1 song holds at #2 for the third week in its 17th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (166K).
3. Foster The People, "Pumped Up Kicks." The song holds at #3 for the eighth week in its 25th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (174K).
4. LMFAO, "Sexy And I Know It." The song holds at #4 for the second week in its seventh week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (206K).
5. Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine, "Stereo Hearts." The song holds at #5 for the second week in its 18th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (136K).
6. Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, "We Found Love." The song jumps from #7 to #6 in its fourth week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (174K).
7. David Guetta featuring Usher, "Without You." The song jumps from #8 to #7 in its seventh week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (129K).
8. Cobra Starship featuring Sabi, "You Make Me Feel..." The song jumps from #9 to #8 in its 14th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (107K).
9. LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem." The former #1 song drops from #6 to #9 in its 30th week on the chart. This is its 22nd week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (94K).
10. Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa featuring Bruno Mars, "Young, Wild & Free." This new entry is from the soundtrack to Mac & Devin Go To High School, which is due in December. It's Snoop's 12th top 10 hit, the third for Wiz Khalifa and the seventh for Mars. Digital sales rank: #6 (159K).
Lady Gaga's "You And I" drops from #10 to #11. Digital sales rank: #10 (96K).
Alexandra Stan's "Mr. Saxobeat" jumps from #26 to #21 in its 14th week. I hope Emilio and Gloria Estefan like the record, which sounds a lot like their old group Miami Sound Machine. Which is a compliment..."5 O'Clock" by T-Pain featuring Wiz Khalifa & Lily Allen surges from #30 to #25 in its third week. The song is likely to become T-Pain's seventh top five hit; his fifth as as a lead artist.
"Ni**as In Paris" by Jay-Z/Kanye West jumps from #32 to #27 in its 10th week. I think it's probably just a coincidence, but the latest album by Diddy-Dirty Money is titled Last Train To Paris..."Fly" by Nicki Minaj featuring Rihanna jumps from #39 to #34 in its eighth week... Coldplay's "Paradise" vaults from #68 to #38 in its fifth week...Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" jumps from #77 to #42 in its third week. Dr. Luke co-wrote and co-produced the song.
The Fray's "Heartbeat" bows at #43. This is the first single from the band's third studio album Scars And Stories, which is due in February It's vying to become the band's fourth top 10 hit. (I don't think I need to tell you that this isn't a cover of Don Johnson's 1986 hit. The actor, then starring on Miami Vice, took a song with the same title to #5.)
Selena Gomez & the Scene's "Love You Like A Love Song" jumps from #52 to #45 in its 17th week. It's a very good record....Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain" jumps from #64 to #47 in its third week...Luke Bryan's "I Don't Want This Night To End" jumps from #73 to #54 in its third week...Zac Brown Band's "Keep Me In Mind" jumps from #83 to #66 in its third week...Big Sean's "Dance (A$$)" jumps from #93 to #69 in its second week.
Martina McBride's "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" re-enters the Hot 100 at #71. McBride's latest album, Eleven, enters The Billboard 200 at #10 this week...China Anne McClain's "Calling All The Monsters" re-enters at #86. McClain stars in the Disney channel series A.N.T. Farm. The soundtrack enters The Billboard 200 at #29...."Still Got It" by Tyga featuring Drake bows at #89. This is the second single from Tyga's second album, Careless World: The Rise of The Last King, which is due on Nov. 19.
Roscoe Dash and Wale, who were featured on Waka Flocka Flame's top 20 hit "No Hands," are both listed on this week's chart with hits of their own. Roscoe Dash's "Good Good Night" bows at 91. It's the fourth single from the rapper's album Ready Set Go! Wale's "That Way" (featuring Jeremih & Rick Ross) jumps from #71 to #64 in its seventh week.
Jessie J's "Domino" bows at #96. She has had three top 10 hits in the U.K. in the past year, including the chart-topping "Price Tag," which reached #23 on the Hot 100.
"Make Me Proud" by Drake featuring Nicki Minaj bows at #97. This is the two stars' third charted collabo. "Moment 4 Life" peaked at #13. "Up All Night" peaked at #49. "Make Me Proud" is the second chart hit from Drake's second studio album Take Care, which will be released on Nov. 15.
Evanescence's "Lost In Paradise" bows at #99. This is vying to become the group's fourth top 10 hit. The group's third album, Evanescence, enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week. You already know that if you read Chart Watch: Albums. If you missed it, here's a link.
Richard Marx had three #1 hits on the Hot 100 in the late 1980s: "Hold On To The Nights," "Satisfied" and "Right Here Waiting." Marx's recording career has cooled, but he remains in demand as a songwriter. Last week, he notched his third #1 hit on Hot Country Songs with Keith Urban's "Long Hot Summer." It follows Urban's 2005 hit "Better Days" and Kenny Rogers' 1985 hit "Crazy." Marx co-wrote all three hits with the artists.
Cali Swag District's 2010 hit "Teach Me How To Dougie" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. The song, which reached #28 on the Hot 100, got a sales-boosting shout-out in Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song."
Eli Young Band's "Crazy Girl" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales. It's the first million-seller for the band, which is headed by Mike Eli and James Young (hence the band's name).
Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" tops the 1 million mark in sales this week. The song was featured on an eponymous album by the band in 1975, but wasn't released as a single (or even a B side) at the time. Dixie Chicks' faithful 2002 cover version has sold 692K digital copies.
