Having a bunch of hits does not make someone an icon or a legend. Olivia Newton-John had over a dozen Top 10 hits that spanned over a decade. She also had several Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum albums. How often do you hear people talking about how legendary and iconic she is? Where is she on this list? Connie Francis ranks among the top female artists in terms of Hot 100 entries. Another icon and legend? thats actually a great comparison. Rihanna could infact be the Olivia Newton John of this decade.

Christina's success is completely overstated here. Christina is far from an icon or legend in a lasting sense, as of now, anyway. Because some 50 year old in Bulgaria or whatever seems to recall her and puts out isn't an indication of cultural popularity or relevancy, really, but feel free to keep telling yourself that. Let's be real: she's hit "reality judge to cling to what's left of her career" status. Anyway, back on topic: If anyone actually looked closely at these rankings of 'legends/icons', you'd see that pretty much every one is also ranked by the amount of time that they've been on the scene. People put Elvis and the Beatles at the top, MJ/Madonna together, Mariah/Whitney/Celine, Beyonce/Britney/Eminem, etc. Time is the biggest issue here so naturally Rihanna has a way to go. Precisely. And while I'm at it, allow me to second the notion that this thread is... cringe-worthy.

I don't think so bew. Britney was the most searched and popular celebrity of the last decade. That's true fact. But bew there's no point in arguing with someone who spells it Eminim and regards Xtina as iconic Having millions of young people look up to you and have your songs performed on all these The Voice/Xfactor/American Idol shows all over the world by different people = iconic. Christina's voice alone has already made her a pop icon at least on a worldwide scale. Not to mention that people keep dismissing her and yet she's still getting paid millions constantly for all these private gigs. I'm not saying she's the biggest thing ever but to say she hasn't made an impact well that's being foolish. Right, making millions off of playing birthday parties, not touring or new music.

Except that even before they officially broke up in 1970, the Beatles were already regarded as legends and one of the greatest rock/pop groups of all time. They would have been near the top/at the top of this list even then. In fact, the last 40 years have really only enhanced their legend and their legacy.

Not that you're wrong, but the whole point of that post was that the term "legend" is getting thrown at these girls because of how near "the top" they are right now (barring Christina -- why she's in this thread is beyond me at all). That doesn't mean they'll have the same legendary status in 40 or 50 years as the Beatles do. People are naturally going to call big names legendary in their current time like it means something because of sensationalism, but that might not mean anything down the road nor does it make it any less inane.

I dont see Rihanna, Ke$ha or any of these other girls getting that much for a 4-song gig? She's making million whether through private gigs or touring it's still millions of $$$..

It's not about the $$$ here sweetums, it's about how you got it.

During Mariah's period of career floundering in the early 00s, she was getting paid ridiculous amounts for private gigs too. Meanwhile she couldn't sell out theaters when she went on tour. These private gigs mean very little; just that one extremely rich person is willing to pay a ridiculous amount for a private performance. It says nothing about overall relevance.

Can we all just take a step back and look at how we're honestly discussing whether or not Christina Aguilera is a music legend? Christina Aguilera. The way that word has been devalued (or even seized on at all) on music forums is insane. Aretha Franklin is a music legend. Elvis Presley is a music legend. Christina Aguilera is NOT a music legend. I think it comes from the amount of time some people invest in their favourite artists. If you spend weeks, months and years following an artist's every step and songs' every move on the charts, you want something back. Being able to bestow some sort of title on them in return for your effort seems to be what people have hit upon. The thing is, most people's favourite artists aren't music legends (or icons or whatever - the pain with which people assign various levels to similar words is also excruciating). That's just the way it is. Unless we see a sudden influx of Phil Spector stans it's unlikely that will ever be the case. Most 'active' artists are not legends. But that's not a bad thing. Enjoy your favourite artists for what they are because by calling someone a legend every time they debut at #97 on the Bulgarian Hot 100 all you're doing is making yourself and your favourite artist look ridiculous. Sometimes it takes a little distance to see it, but it does. It's funny, because the conversation this thread is actually about has been fairly calm and measured and reached a smart conclusion.

These private gigs mean very little; just that one extremely rich person is willing to pay a ridiculous amount for a private performance. It says nothing about overall relevance. Unlike Mariah, Xtina sold out arena though. Also, Mariah was in a much higher status in early 2000s than Xtina today. Mariah came after a huge decade. While today, Xtina has a very low status, lower than Glitter era, cos many people seem to hate her so much. If she still gets paid for lot of cash in many private shows even during her low career, i think she slowly has built her iconic status (probably), and she doesn't need hits to stay relevant and popular for certain people, juts like Celine Dion. But I don't say she's a legend yet.

If we're going to insist on drilling this whole Christina issue further into the ground, can we at least make a thread for that or change the title of this one?
