Albums that did as well as 'The Fame' are almost never followed up with albums that are even bigger. It's easy to say that in retrospect but at the time many thought Gaga's "peak" was still to come. Maybe nobody should have expected those kinda sales but that doesn't mean it couldn't have stayed in the top 20/40 for a longer time, not to mention it only yielded one huge hit while other female acts eclipsed her in that aspect. So it's not hard to see why many are saying BTW is underperforming, we heard it way too many times that she's the most important female artist of the last 20 years, will have a career as long as Madonna, Mariah etc... Only Adele has eclipsed her album sales this year. Why does that mean she won't have a long career?

Yeah but there's no guarentee she'll be Top 2 by year's end. I have a feeling she's going to knocked down to #4-6 (especially if MTN becomes a complete flop.) Weezy's catching up and Drake, Bieber and Buble are coming.. But that's not to say it's done badly.

Why does that mean she won't have a long career? b/c she has had a huge drop off in hype & excitement since the era started ... even tho BTW started super strong on the charts it died down very quickly so she's ending the era at a completeley different state than how it began. i think her next album will be what proves if she will have legit longevity or not b/c this era has kinda created some doubt into that theory i'm not saying this album is a flop or anything like that so dont go crazy lol but she was once at the top & isnt anymore compared to how other females this year have been doing. i know she's at 1.8 sold but b/c of her first week 99cent discount idk if it really means much either. like Billboard said, the sales caused by the discount doesnt really indicate an accurate portrayal of sales in comparison to other acts ... which directly conflicts statements like "she's the best selling after adele"

The true test to longevity is success after the peak. Gaga's next album will be the litmus test. But that's what happens when you oversaturate the media early on in your career. Things like this have happened many times in the past. Very few artist can be low key yet everpresent (i.e. Pink, Rihanna, Drake, Eminem). I think she will have longevity...I just am unsure whether she will continue to have impact. I don't know if she will continue to have the shock value of her early days as it gets tiresome. It will be interesting to see how she reinvents herself to stay relevant.

Eminem is always big whenever he has an album & he used to be kinda all over the media in the early 2000s for doing controversial stuff but now not so much anymore yet he still sells i know Britney never saw BOMT sales again but it still seemed like her hype was still growing even after her first album & even though he next few albums sales werent as high as her 1st, she still was the #1 popstar & still made huge impact on pop culture long after her debut. actually didnt most of her iconic moments come after her sales had peaked? idk if thats gonna be the same with Gaga b/c it already seems like shes trying to change her image a lil bit ... i think she knows the shockjock thing might already be tiring to ppl & that might be why the hype has died down so early for this era but idk if she can really last without all the outlandish outfits & stuff assuming that people get tired of that & she has to switch it up to make it clear again so noone misinterprets me lol i'm not saying that this era means the end for Gaga but its just kinda a shaky era where shes not performing as well as she used to .. she could easily get back all her hype & be huge stuff again next year :)

Well, Spears' biggest-selling album was her first, but the second shipped 10m+, so she was still hugely successful (along with BSB and Ny Sync's follow-ups and such). The big drop came with the third album, which, while dropping 50% or so from the second album, did 4m-5m in the USA. While the three big teen-pop acts (Spears, BSB. N Sync) remained multi-platinum sensations into their third albums, only Spears had a multi-platinum studio album thereafter (In the Zone- and Circus may be certified down the line). N Sync didn't make a fourth studio album, but that's here nor there. Not sure if I'd categorize her crazy personal-life antics as "iconic," but media interest in her swelled big time around the time of the "breakdown."
RE Stefani Gaga- "Marry the Night" is making decent gains, and the video has yet to hit. But the trouble is, as some have said, is that she's had such success- especially at pop radio- that if a single doesn't do as well as predecessors, it's a "flop."

And what I'm saying is this: Michael Jackson never topped Thriller. Madonna never topped True Blue. Britney never topped BOMT. Mariah never topped Daydream. Whitney never topped the Bodyguard.
Every Pop star peaks.

I believe Music Box is Mimi's biggest worldwide seller.
But, yes, every act- regardless of who they are and whether it happens with their debut or after- hits a commercial peak that it does not approach again.

And what I'm saying is this: Michael Jackson never topped Thriller. Madonna never topped True Blue. Britney never topped BOMT. Mariah never topped Daydream. Whitney never topped the Bodyguard. Every Pop star peaks. its not about peaking lol. everyone does that but a lot of artists like the ones you mentioned still had their hype & excitement up afterwards, Gaga's lost a lot since BTW era started already & the hype just seems to be going down still. & did you see slw's post about eminem still having huge hype & sales & interest a decade after even though his sales peaked long ago? lol. i brought up how Britney's sales peaked with her debut but her cultural significance as the #1 popstar & iconic moments started & continued after that era so she still remained on top in other ways. for gaga it seems like her big moments are all tied in with her debut ... also mariah, michael & madonna all still created huge moments after their biggest albums & created impacts with their songs after ... during fame monster gaga's songs were doing that but none of her singles this era have really made that much of an impact other than BTW which some ppl even debate ... holiday guy: yeah her sales hit super hard during Britney era b/c of oversaturation which might be what gaga is going through now also .. for gaga tho, her big iconic moments were all tied in with her debut unlike Britney who became a bigger media figure after her debut. and i'm not talking about her personal antics as being iconic lol , i meant all her classic moments like the Slave 4 U snake & the Madonna kiss. i think gaga doing those type of shock moments so early on in her career might backfire ... & now that BTW is falling hard on the charts & oversaturation might be setting in with ppl tired of her of the crazy stuff from her, idk what she could do from here. or maybe she's just gonna go the more serious route like where she's heading now ....

Outside of her debut video, I think Spears' most iconic moment was the 2000 VMAs- the snake performance doesn't really compare to those (or even the VMAs kiss).
I do think Stefani Gaga needs to take another page from one of her idols and pull a "reinvention." Perhaps ditch the crazy-outfit schtick, for starters.

On another subject, even tho is still early to call those numbers. I think Foster The People will go at least Platinum..... or maybe become the new Mumford next year. LMFAO is selling comparatively well compared to their equals (Pitbull, Enrique, Jlo, etc.) who all seem to be unable to go beyond the 200-300K mark. I really hope FTP can go platinum. They need a follow-up to start taking off though, I'm still confused as to what they're doing next. "Dont Stop" is in the iTunes Top 200 but I heard they switched to CIWYW but now I'm hearing "Houdini"... I really hope they get some Grammy nods, maybe that will add more fuel to them. People were expecting Gaga to do the kind of numbers Adele's being doing for the last 10 months. Follow ups to huge eras are almost always frontloaded and fade away fast. It's happened many times before. (I wouldn't be surprised if 23 is extremely frontloaded as well when it comes out late next year.) Yep and I'm almost sure that's going to happen. This. But I could care less as long as she keeps making music like her current stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if Gaga completely reinvents her image and trecks even further down the more serious route. If that means more "You & I/BrownEyes" less JD/PF type stuff then I'm all for it. :'( It's only the ones who stan for her success and want bragging rights on forums that will care.
