Impressive that Scotty McCreery has sold 465k before the official holiday season begins. Gaga needs some serious promo. It'd really help if she performed at the AMAs. its so weird that BTW is already making such big drops & declines when it isnt even 6 months old! gaga implied this was gonna be a long era but if something doesnt give soon then idk how that will happen the thanksgiving will help it keep afloat for the rest of the year & theres a ton of pressure on MTN b/c it has to be really big for this era to continue to the next year ... & remember its a 5th single & she hasnt been a radio it girl this era

^Thanks for posting the breakdown. CDs accounted for 68.5% of all album sales last week; the prior week, they accounted for almost 66.6% of all album sales. Part of that could be consumers preferring to pick up holiday music on CD rather than digital. You are welcome. I post this each week to show people that the cd is not dead. There is an article going around the web that labels are abandoning the cd in late 2012. The article is false.

I think Gaga should just stop this era and move on after this single. How many songs can you release from one album? She has like 4 singles already....granted all of them hit the Top 10 but I think she should move on after this rather than try to do a remix album.

She's been all over the place. Lol. She needs a hit that's gonna sell that album. Her last 2 didn't really do anything for her. Yeah, this. This album has already gotten an immense of exposure to the public, they're not unaware of it by any means. The problem is that the singles haven't been sticking that well so the wheels of the era have sort of come off a bit quickly with nothing to sustain the initial hype. If any song will do it though, it's "Marry The Night". I agree with Adonis that she should just move on after this single, especially if this doesn't end well. EDIT: Damn she's #70?!

Everybody does after a certain period.
At some point everyone will face a situation when only your fans care. And then it's essential how many fans you have. Michael Jackson has a huge fanbase, also Madonna. Look at Madonna, nobody bought American Life. But she kept going, touring and have had a decent success since then.
Gaga has the biggest following in the pop world at the moment and if she can maintain it she'll be fine as long as she wants to do music. There will be flop eras but who cares.

j74, you're forgetting to put The Gift ahead of Jason Aldean's album on the best-sellers list. As for Evancho's O Holy Night, it has sold more than the three titles currently shown above it. Not sure if Dream With Me has sold more than Brad paisley's album, though.

I hardly think you can compare LG's current career to Madonna's at American Life, which came out 20 years after Everybody and 18 years after Holiday (or even post-Erotica). In retrospect, the onslaught for BTW with radio and the Amazon sales hurt more than anything. LG will be fine.

Gaga has the #2 album of the year and has had multiple hits. Seems to be pretty good
Was the expectation that this album performed at the same level as 'The Fame'?
That was never likely to begin with

I honestly didn't really expect her to sell more than 2-2.5 in the US and around 5-6 Worldwide. So, she has already met those expectations I had for the cd (2+ in the US is guaranteed, 6 looks guaranteed worldwide) and depending on MTN/other singles may go further. I am pleased. I do find it funny that other artists sell 5-6 worldwide and are considered massive icons, legends, sales success UNBELIEVABLE but Gaga does it and it is embarrassing for her Shows what standard she set for success.

One blockbuster album is almost never followed up by another of the same magnitude.
So what is happening here is not a shock, it is expected

I think it's more to do with the rate at which the era seems to be losing grounds that people find the problem. I mean, in any case 2 million is great for album sales standards nowadays but I definitely think the fact that the era is still sort of new and already so low is why some are calling it out and it's not completely unjustified. The followup to a huge breakthrough album is always tricky and it wss never going to be possible to top The Fame/TFM sales so anyone holding her to those standards were setting themselves up. I expected it to be a very frontloaded era from the getgo before the album even came out performing similarly to George Michael's "Listen Without Prejudice" which also followed a huge debut era and still sold well (10 million copies) but was deemed a commercial failure because despite opening big on the heels of his debut, it lost hype quickly as well. It's a very identical case because just like with BTW, Michael's sophomore was also not as commercial as his debut and was when he started recording more serious music with deeper messages.

LOL - I'd buy that album based on that statement alone Albums that did as well as 'The Fame' are almost never followed up with albums that are even bigger. Marks set by 'The Fame' may never again be reached by Gaga. Although it certainly can happen, it doesn't appear to be that way so far.

The thing about LG is that with this album, she's carrying the success of it entirely on her shoulders. There is no ¨cheap¨, rent-a-rapper collaboration to keep things going.
In fact, since Just Dance (with Colby O'Donis...lmao) she has only done 1 more collab, but this time with a highly prestigious artist: Beyonce.
I think she will do fine, even tho this era has been plagued by mistake after mistake, my take is that even tho she might seem like batshit crazy, she is regarded by the public as an artist that has artistic integrity.
Also, she seems to me that she is one of those artists that needs to tour.
PS: Honestly she should have credited both TEOG and Hair as Lady Gaga feat. Clarence Clemmons.... but whatev.

On another subject, even tho is still early to call those numbers. I think Foster The People will go at least Platinum..... or maybe become the new Mumford next year.
LMFAO is selling comparatively well compared to their equals (Pitbull, Enrique, Jlo, etc.) who all seem to be unable to go beyond the 200-300K mark.

People were expecting Gaga to do the kind of numbers Adele's being doing for the last 10 months.
Follow ups to huge eras are almost always frontloaded and fade away fast. It's happened many times before. (I wouldn't be surprised if 23 is extremely frontloaded as well when it comes out late next year.)

Albums that did as well as 'The Fame' are almost never followed up with albums that are even bigger. It's easy to say that in retrospect but at the time many thought Gaga's "peak" was still to come. Maybe nobody should have expected those kinda sales but that doesn't mean it couldn't have stayed in the top 20/40 for a longer time, not to mention it only yielded one huge hit while other female acts eclipsed her in that aspect. So it's not hard to see why many are saying BTW is underperforming, we heard it way too many times that she's the most important female artist of the last 20 years, will have a career as long as Madonna, Mariah etc...

Personally, I prefer BTW to The Fame era quality-wise.
Sales are a different story.
