the Valiants.
First released as a single in 1989; charted on the country charts for the first time during the 1993 holiday season. This is a nice enough track- and gets decent airplay on country radio during the holidays. The melody supposedly is based on a 1964 Bobby Vinton hit.

I just started listening to this and I really like it. I'm surprised I never really heard it before, although I'm sure I have.
LeAnn Rimes covered this on her "What A Wonderful World" Christmas album:

Someone told me that a guy (Vince Vance) sang this, and I believed them, so I convinced a lot of people of the same thing. It turns out I was wrong.
Having said that, this is a Christmas staple. I think it would be covered a lot more if it weren't for the other song with the same title. That's not a dig, as I love both.

^Indeed. it's the track that usually gets the most play at country radio during the holidays (even topping Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree").

My Dad for the longest time thought that Vince Vance sang this song and he just had an incredibly girlish voice. This is still one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs and a welcomed listen every year from Thanksgiving to Christmas Day.

I remember being so surprised hearing this for the first time, just because it had the same title as Mariah's but was completely unrelated. For a long time, I had no idea this one came first.

This has been one of my favorites for many years now! A loved one passed and I always miss them at Christmastime, and this song's lyrics speak to that for me.

WYRK every year plays 1 Christmas song per hour on Thanksgiving weekend. And I actually heard this song this afternoon when I went out. It's like they read my mind since I was hoping for the slim odds I would hear this today. ;)

seemed this was more successful several years back.probably having the same title as the Mariah song has hurt it even though this was released first.both songs are great but i actually prefer this one . Kelly Clarkson did a cover of this version last year.
the video's in the previous posts have been taken down.

Yeah, it looks like it's declined some in popularity the last several years.

Probably the most underrated Christmas song. My local station plays this religiously during their holiday season programming.
