Thought it might be worth noting that this coming weekend will mark the 40th anniversary of Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40. The show made it's debut the weekend of October 8, 1983.

There was an announcement of the, then upcoming, new show on page 8 of the 9/23/83 issue of R&R:

I haven't listened to Dees in years. Has he ever acknowledged any of the show's previous anniversaries?

I don't think people realize how long 40 years is and to have continually hosted a weekly 4-hour radio show over that period of time is incredibly amazing.

I was 10 years old in 1983. Hard to believe he's been on basically my entire radio listening life so far.

No one has ever done what Rick has. The closest would be Casey Kasem and Bob Kingsley. Bob hosted his country countdown show all the way up to a few weeks before he passed.

I doubt Rick will mention it this weekend, but one thing I believe we all wonder, is how much longer his show will run.

i am surprised that the network who does Ricks show has not cancelled unless the ratings are good . he is 73 and the demographics of top 40 of course are so much younger.

Between American Top 40, Casey's Top 40, and the various spin-offs of both shows, Casey had a 39 year run hosting syndicated countdowns (July 1970 to July 2009).

Between American Country Countdown (which he took over in May 1978) and Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40 (which he would host until shortly before his death in October 2019), Kingsley had a run of almost 41-and-a-half years.

I'm pretty sure WT40 is AI-generated. No, I kid, but it often seems that way.

As has been discussed on this thread, it's hard to discern why it keeps going - do people actually download/use the app? Presumably it's not being created for free. Say what you will about Ryan Seacrest, it does appear some effort is put into making AT40 relevant.

As for mentioning the 40 year anniversary, the show as it stands has no awareness of its own history.

This seems to be a fairly common occurrence, where the top 40 is mostly stagnant and yet magically two songs by the same artist drastically switch places.

I agree with you on this. Once again, they will be able to debut a new song without getting rid of any of the ancient songs in the bottom 10.

Rick blends Hot AC with Pop music. I think they look at both charts and try to mesh a Top 40 together.
