ADELE MAKES DIGITAL INROADS U.K. Thrush Now #1 Digital Album of All Time, Crashes Top 10 Digital Songs
January 4, 2012
If you had any doubt that 2011 was a historic year for Adele, the facts will certainly convince you. The U.K. pop diva’s XL/Columbia album 21, currently closing in on 6 million sold in the U.S. alone, is the #1 digital seller of all time, with 1.8 million, topping the #2 seller, Glassnote’s Mumford & Sons, by almost 700k.
In addition, her “Rolling in the Deep” has moved into the #7 slot on the All-Time Digital Songs chart, with almost 6 million.
21 is now #105 on the SoundScan era best-seller list, nestled between Madonna’s Immaculate Collection and Sarah McLachlan’s Surfacing.
Metallica’s self-titled 1991 album tops the All-Time Album Sales chart with 15.7 million.
The rest of the Top 10 includes Shania Twain’s Come On Over (#2, 15.5m), Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill (#3, 14.7m), Backstreet Boys’ Millennium (#4, 12.2m), The Beatles 1 (#5, 12m), Bodyguard soundtrack (#6, 11.8m), Santana’s Supernatural (#7, 11.7m), Creed’s Human Clay (#8, 11.6m), NSYNC’s No Strings Attached (#9, 11.1m) and Celine Dion’s Falling Into You (#10, 10.8m). Other 10 million-plus sellers include Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me (#11, 10.78m), Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Legend (#12, 10.6m), Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time (#13, 10.54m), Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP (#14, 10.536m), Hootie & the Blowfish’s Cracked Rear View (#15, 10.3m), Titanic soundtrack (#16, 10.1m), Backstreet Boys (#17, 10.1m) and Eminem Show (#18, 10m).
That gives Backstreet Boys and Eminem two apiece of the diamond sellers, while Dion is represented with her own album and the Titanic soundtrack.
Aside from Adele t #7, the Top 10 Digital Songs include Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” (#1, 7.7m), Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (#2, 6.5m) and “Let’s Dance” (#3, 6.4m), Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (#4, 6.3m), Flo Rida f/T-Pain’s “Low” (#5, 6.152m), Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” (#6, 6.148m), Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” (#8, 5.9m), Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” (#9, 5.74m) and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” (#10, 5.72m).
Following Adele and Mumford & Sons on the Digital Album all-time tally are Eminem’s Recovery (#3, 1.1m), Lady Gaga’s Fame (#4, 1m) and Born This Way (#5, 877k), Coldplay’s Viva la Vida (#6, 841k), Taylor Swift’s Fearless (#7, 681k), Kings of Leon’s Only by the Night (#8, 710k), Twilight soundtrack (#9, 682k) and Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (#10, 681k).
You may now return to your regularly scheduled web-browsing.

Brenda Lee reigns as the queen of Christmas BDS spins, while Mimi Carey reigns the queen of BDS Christmas audience and sales. :) When it says "in thousands" for genre digital-track sales, that would be 305.6 million for pop, 291.65m for rock, 262.1 million for R&B/Hip-Hop and 143.7m for country. Those four genres alone account for 859 million of the 1.271 billion digital tracks sold in 2011- or, roughly, 67.5% of the overall total. Also interesting to see that in regards to digital tracks by decade, it follows a backward chronological order- naturally, more recent would rule, but these digital buyers really should seek out pre-21st-century music more. (Some may be doing so via albums, though).

(Some may be doing so via albums, though). I was thinking the exact same thing! Especially since so many older albums are discounted on Itunes and Amazon. I was especially surprised that the 90s only accounted for 7% of digital track sales. Some 90s tracks still feel so current to me!

Millennium was one of the albums priced at $5 at Walmart and maybe another outlet (we saw it on the catalog chart), so that may have contributed to the increased sales (in addition to raised profile, courtesy of the NKOTBSB album/tour).
