I wonder why this went to iTunes on a Friday. I hope the limited sales week doesn't keep it from debuting top 10 on the Hot 100.

Is there any way to tell how close this is to hitting #1 on iTunes?

Single Review: Carrie Underwood, “Good Girl”It starts off as a typical Carrie “attitude” song, but even in the opening section, something’s different. Her voice is raw and gritty, lacking the typical polish that made earlier songs in this vein sound a bit forced. It leads into a fairly typical country chorus, and as that’s coming to an end, you’re ready for the second verse.
But it doesn’t come just yet. Instead, the hand claps stop, the band slows down, and she lets the melody hang, repeating “go” and “he’s low” in a hypnotizing, almost soothing way. Just as you’re being lulled into submission, the record snaps back to life, as she rattles off the reasons a good girl wants to believe in that no-good man.
Familiarity sets in, and as the chorus runs into the bridge, I was reveling in that “go”/”he’s low” construct the second time around, until the rug was pulled out from me again. Instead of completing the bridge this time, a blistering guitar solo tears through, leading up to a ferocious rock vocal that would make Janis proud.
As the song reaches its climax, I braced for the inevitable. A song that builds up this much energy always ends up crossing the line, ending with a loud and cluttered bang. Once again, she zags. Instead of escalating, the band drops out entirely, and the final ten seconds of the song is just Carrie – no backup singers, no band, not even a hand clap. It actually ends with ten seconds of unadorned a cappella.
In three-and-a-half minutes, Underwood surprised me more than any country recording since “Giddy On Up”, and without any of the accompanying camp. I’ve always been a fan of hers, because Glory to God in the Highest That Voice, but I never suspected that she’d be this relentlessly creative.
An absolutely exhilarating record
A This is exactly how I would have written my review (but not nearly as eloquently, lol). 'Good Girl' totally threw me off base throughout the entire song, because just when I predicted how the song would head, it steered in a different direction. I love the raw, raspy, rocky vocals in the pre-chorus parts of the verses and during the ending at 2:37 while belting then gorgeously transitioning to head voice singing "yeah". The production and vocals are the best for any uptempo to date. As non-country as this song, her vocals sound ultra-twangy to me- in a good way. Overally, this is Carrie's strongest opening single to date, strongest vocal uptempo vocal to date, and only has one negative: the song's theme has been used on nearly every CU uptempo single. iTunes update: #2 with a strong "bullet" at 0.7457 in less than 24 hours ! Ant, I use this website to track iTunes in various countries in "real-time".

Does that mean she's selling approximately 75% of what the #1 song is selling?

I wonder why this went to iTunes on a Friday. I hope the limited sales week doesn't keep it from debuting top 10 on the Hot 100. The whole strategy with GG has been unusual (from previous Carrie history). A simultaneous iTunes and radio release! On a Friday! It initially frustrated me because I couldn't pinpoint the possible reasoning behind it and how it could produce the most impactful outcome. But now, it's just gotten a reaction from me similar to GG -- FASCINATION. I'm truly fascinated. And hella entertained!

Carrie is performing at a private party for the Motion Picture & Television Fund tonight. Short video clips of "Cowboy Casanova" & "Wasted" have surfaced.

I'm not sure if someone mentioned this earlier but as I was listening to GG for the thousandth time today, I was recalling the debate about whether this would have been performed at Crossroads with Steven Tyler. Now that we have heard the song, it really would have fit in quite nicely.

First day on mediabase for GG was as follows: 42 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Good Girl 370 0 370 3.287
No idea how it compares to Carrie's previous singles or other first singles by country's core artists.

She's staying very steady at #2 on that iTunes chart thing. Hovering right around 75%.

Bringing over what I posted in the country forum: That's more than Cowboy Casanova, which after 1 day and a few hours as well, was at #45, had 298 spins and 2.642 million AIs. Take into account, of course, the difference in panel. Looking further into my notes, So Small started at #56 with 145 spins and 1.421 million AIs.

Aw man, wanted to see it hit #1 on itunes, but 2 is still great. #1 is still possible, depending on how much staying power the current #1 has and how steady GG remains. If I recall correctly, it took about 2 days for Cowboy Casanova to hit its peak (#2), whereas GG hit #2 in about 16 hours or so.

If I recall correctly, it took about 2 days for Cowboy Casanova to hit its peak (#2), whereas GG hit #2 in about 16 hours or so. Not likely... She has been hovering around 75% of the #1 song since last night. She has been stable at around 75%. If she were to challenge the #1 spot, she'd still have to be increasing exponentially. I think it's possible for her to drift into the 80s, but I think the "fast" rise is over... From now she'll SLOWLY decline into the teens and twenties, to then rise back up as the song peaks at radio. It looks as if #2 will be her peak on iTunes. Which is still incredible.

If she can stay selling like this through next week, she'll definitely be in the top five for digital songs, maybe even #3 behind Fun. and Kelly (if things stay the same). What's her highest peak there?

I love the fact that she's #2 on iTunes, but I was really hoping she'd get that #1 spot, at least for a few hours. Cowboy Casanova also peaked at #2. :(

Another positive review: 4 stars. www.roughstock.com/blog/single-review-carrie-underwood-good-girlThere’s no denying it. The release of new Carrie Underwood is a major event in country music. Performed first for country radio tastemakers (program directors/music directors and jocks) at 2012’s Country Radio Seminar, “Good Girl” is the lead single of her upcoming fourth album and it immediately created a buzz on the internet with the live performance captured (watch here) by one of those tastemakers. The song, which Carrie co-wrote with Ashley Gorley and Chris DeStefano, shimmies and shakes with 1980s style hand claps and a pop-leaning melody while the lyrics find her saying to a ‘good girl’ that she needs to pay attention to the deeds her man is actually doing and that he’s ‘no good’ for her and that the girl should leave her man. Tammy Wynette, Carrie Underwood is not. While the song isn’t remotely ‘traditional country’ and isn’t too far removed melodically from the rhythmic pop songs that are dominating pop music airwaves right now, there’s also no denying the fantastic vocal delivery Underwood provides on “Good Girl.” Without a shadow of a doubt this is the best uptempo vocal that Carrie Underwood has given country radio, including “Last Name” and “Before He Cheats.” This song, while thematically similar to “Undo It,” also rivals “Before He Cheats” as the best-written tempo song of Carrie’s career. All of this adds up to a song that is destined to scream to the top of the country charts and most likely it’ll find a home on the AC and Top 40 stations too (without remixing as the song’s country elements like steel guitar and fiddle are buried deep in the mix). This is an event record and one that is undeniably catchy and worthy of becoming an earworm, even if it’s got more to do with current pop music than it does current country songs.

From Carrie's blogs yesterday... -confirmed Twitter. [she brought up that it will be used by both her and her team to converse with us] -she's thrilled w/ the GG feedback, and she's glad that it didn't leak. -brought up the fact that if we thought the single was good, we need to wait until the album to be even more surprised. -mentioned that she "definitely won't be running short on singles" this era. THIS PART EXCITES ME SO MUCH ETA: Looks like Kelly is gaining on Carrie fast on iTunes. Carrie's at 77%, and Kelly's at 73%. Promote GG on Twitter, peeps!

The mere release of a song, especially by a country artist, can only push digital sales for a small amount of time so I'm not expecting it to stay this high on iTunes for too long. When she starts to promote it or when its airplay picks up, it may return. Without promo, it already greatly exceeded my expectations. Hopefully, it will stabilize well enough on the country iTunes chart.
