Try Indie 102.3 in Colorado. They run a mix of alt and urban alt, though they aren't playing some alt songs such as Then It All Goes Away and Stick Season. They've also given some love to Turnstile this album era. I strongly suspect that "alternative urban" is going to become more and more of a factor as the years go by. Honestly I'm surprised it fizzled out last year. Foushee and Black Pumas scored top 10s in 2021 and then... nothing. From what I understand, alternative urban (in AAA context) would be more like say, Little Simz, Danger Mouse & Black Thought, Steve Lacy (?), Jamila Woods, Genesis Owusu, etc. - iow a more rap and hip-hop focus with some alternative or soul elements added. It will be interesting if alt will bite to some of these artists though I expect they'll probably be still relegated to WEQX or sth

This is fantastic news. Public radio and college radio have always been awesome, and the biggest issue with corporate and commercial alternative is the fact of how conservative they are with playlists of old AND new music. Like, as a fan of 91X this is their biggest issue with the new format (and even before they switched formats). A lot of San Diegans just listen to KEXP because they’re sick of 91X. You go KEXP and Current. Maybe one day San Diego will get their shit together and realize their full potential.

Corporate radio analysts claim that Alternative currents have no consensus and that’s why playing a lot of currents as an Alt is a bad idea. Never mind that said analysts caused the lack of consensus in the first place by advising Alt stations that “rock is dead shift towards pop”. But they’ll never take the blame for their bad advice.

Pile of new Alt radio gold:
Glass Animals - "Heat Waves" Cannons - "Fire For You" Machine Gun Kelly - "bloody valentine" Billie Eilish - "Therefore I Am" Cage the Elephant - "Skin and Bones (Mix 2020)" Dayglow - "Can I Call You Tonight?" The Strokes - "Bad Decisions"
There are probably others I'm missing but those are the ones I can confirm. If I'm not mistaken these are the first songs of the 2020's to achieve radio gold status.

i'm not big on festivals, but i think i might actually go to this one: Where is this at? If in California , or better yet L.A. you'll definitely run into my sister. All those bands are gonna be present? That pure 80's glory. Nice to see new blood like Riki and Boy Harsher up there too. You gotta go and represent all the 80's freaks.

New AAA station in Seattle that's to be ran by Hubbard Radio (and the first hour selection is not bad, given U.S. Girls, "4 American Dollars", is on there...on top of stunting a load of names in their intro video). Interesting to see how they compete with KEXP and, to a lesser extent, Audacy. radioinsight.com/headlines/248672/hubbard-launches-aaa-98-9-kpnw-seattle/

What seems logical, I believe, but this is more my own opinion/musical taste, but Alternative should take a note from the 2000s (and arguably mostly mid-and-later 1990s) where the format also played "Rock"-leaning artists (guitars, more aggressive but still melodic sound). I don't necessarily mean bringing Breaking Benjamin/Godsmack/Seether etc. back into the fold but I'm looking at newer 'rock' artists like Ayron Jones or Bad Omens. I think there are several handfuls of others, too, who can also fit the 'alternative' subformat: post-hardcore, screamocore, emo/punk/metal, and that fit, and then more garage rock-oriented stuff (Ayron, Queens of Stone Age, etc., more Rise Against). This can merge well with the pop-punk, emo-punk the format still (occasionally) has to offer now. Rap-metal and nu-metal once had a scene there, too (for 4-5 years, most notably). I'm not suggesting this involve a merging of stations but more like a merging of playlists. There's really good stuff, I believe, on all three of the formats, so take a look at what the others have to offer right now.
I'm tiring of the 'golds' (even from the 2010s) but then I'm a musical nerd who has been solid into music now for what is closer to 30 years than 20 years. This is of course all anecdotal, but I also know many "Millennial" types like me who don't listen to the format anymore because they don't play enough 'rock'-fitting' artists. They haven't for a decade. They'd prefer more 'rock'-leaning artists, this can include more guitar-oriented pop punk and the like (Blink, Sum 41, et al). Adult alt. is also good so maybe this format can grow - and I think it's an underrated format in that it now more than ever I believe encompasses a pretty wide variety of sound (comparing to what Hot AC has been and still is for pop).
Fascinating discussion and interesting perspectives I'm reading on this, from many sides. Alternative has been at the forefront of cutting edge, well-rated (I believe) music over my entire lifetime (and greater), IMHO. Let's keep it going.

I'm not sure Alt radio can win me back...some NPR AAAs are decent (KCRW, The Current), but otherwise I stick to my curated Spotify playlists. Since I relocated here, I've discovered that CA has a great darkwave/goth scene with new artists that never get played on the radio: Boy Harsher, Drab Majesty, Spellling & Hirakish to name but a few. The best music never ends up on IHeart playlists.

I still find St. Louis' KPNT (105.7 The Point) to provide the best Alternative radio experience in the country. Their DJs are experienced and charming, and KPNT keeps a pretty solid list of currents curated from both Alternative and Active Rock. Right now they have 34 currents but they've had as many as 40. They're a rare Alt that'll open up slots for currents and will run as many medium rotations as necessary if there's an overflow of viable songs for the station, and that's something I appreciate them for. They generally stick to just five heavies though but hey, nobody's perfect.
Daryl's critiqued them for not being super indie-friendly and I think he's got a point on that. KPNT can get pretty selective about indie rock and indie pop songs. But they do add them; they added "Insomnia" by The Moss last week and added "Cannonballers" by Colony House this week, for example. There are some indie/electronic artists that they'll probably never touch (they have never added Cannons and are historically stingy with CHVRCHES and Rufus Du Sol) but again, nobody's perfect.

Latest Frontiers Records releases for February. Couple of old skoolers like Wig Wam and Robin McAuley with mostly newer AOR bands, but nothing mind blowing. Infinate & Divine was probably my favorite. Still waiting on new Ratt, but Stephen Pearcy's health you know?
Frontiers Records - February 2023 Releases - Robin McAuley, Wig Wam, Khymera, Creye, & MORE!

onlineradiobox.com/us/kvrq/playlist/1KPNW's (the new Seattle AAA) mix is not too bad. Some interesting currents and recurrent choices too. Nice to see them play Simulation Swarm as a recurrent/power gold.

Winger is back and there's nothing Beavis and Butt-head can do about it. New album 'Seven" on Frontiers Records rocks proper.

Significant panel changes announced by Mediabase. Expected WBUZ move to active. 2 24/7 IHeart custom stations added to ALT, which will truly give IHeart increased ability to influence the chart. More dramatic- 10 new AAA reporters. The format has come of age and is more important than alt right now. It drives streams and breaks artists. It’s been the industry chatter for some time now - as over covid well programmed live and local community oriented AAA and non comms got big ratings and leaned into new music discovery. At a time ALT is gold based, conservative and increasingly voice tracked by out of market DJs.
Additionally active Mediabase added a bunch of new stations

It’s been the industry chatter for some time now - as over covid well programmed live and local community oriented AAA and non comms got big ratings and leaned into new music discovery. At a time ALT is gold based, conservative and increasingly voice tracked by out of market DJs. Additionally active Mediabase added a bunch of new stations There has been a LOT of chatter about Alt PDs losing all faith in new music completely. From my perspective, it's not surprising. The stuff getting good callouts are throwbacks to what was popular 15-20 years ago. A lot of these PDs would rather slit their wrists than go back to that. They bet the farm on Lorde/Billie Eilish/AJR and that trend and it blew up in their faces. The only Alts doing well are those who lean Active or never dug in too deeply on the alternative pop trend like Milwaukee's WLUM. The stations having the most influence in the new music being picked up are from the Midwest - KPNT, WLUM, WWCD, etc. But the coastal Alts aren't going to follow the lead of Midwestern and Southern Alt stations, they expect things to go the other way around! You look at the playlists, there's a HUGE disconnect between the Midwest/South Alts and what the West Coast/New England stations play. The coastals are also the ones shoving the "gold, gold, gold" trend hard, while the flyover stations are generally playing more new music. I'm not surprised WBUZ, as a perpetual outlier, also lost faith in their usual approach and started leaning hard to Active, which is also generally a heavy gold-based format at the moment. There isn't enough in the way of "classic Alternative" libraries that any sort of "Classic Alt" format can last longer than 5-10 years. In a sense, it's even contradictory - the mission statement of "Alternative" is to play the fresh and new music, and that's something not happening right now. At least, not on the coasts. But the PDs and many of the remaining jocks are only 5-10 years away from retirement. They just need something to hang on until they can collect their pensions and it can all collapse after that. Classic Alternative will manage to hold on for that long before the same issues that ate the current-based version of the format alive arise again. I don't know what the road for Alt goes from here. They're probably going to have to become some bizarre AAA/Active hybrid to survive, and start investing in live and local again. But with the faith completely broken in the format after the alt-pop trend sputtered, who's going to rescue Alt?

It’s interesting being in a market that was starved for alt and is seeing very strong early returns on their classic alt switch. WNNX has jumped into Atlant’s top 10 in only 3 months. 99X, an alternative rock station with original DJs Axel Lowe, Steve Barnes and Leslie Fram so far, has more than tripled the audience of what its predecessor Rock 100.5 was pulling in toward the end of its run late last year. The station ranked no. 9 in February’s Nielsen ratings with a 3.8 share. Rock 100.5, which was airing a blend of classic and active rock, was ranked 24th with a 1.1 share in its final full month of existence.
Things they’re doing well:
-keeping it local. Leslie Fram, morning co-host, is technically in Nashville, but she was the original PD in the 90s and is joining live (not voice tracked).
-embracing nearly 25 years of alt. 80s alt getting as much play as the 90s. They’ve gone as new as around 2010 that I’ve heard. There’s a huge library if PDs will get out of the Lithium XM mindset of only grunge. -as mentioned above, they’re not getting caught in the only grunge/post-grunge trap. Looking at their top tracks on tunegenie (http://wnnx.tunegenie.com/tophits/), I see everything from the expected (Nirvana, Foo, Pearl Jam, Green Day, U2, REM) to NERD, Sponge, Billy Idol and Gorillaz. Personally, I’d love if they would add in some currents. Or at least take their current philosophy of diverse programming and apply it to an HD2 station dedicated to new stuff. They’re also still fleshing out the DJ roster. Right now, it’s really only a morning show, afternoon jock and a specialty acoustic show on Sunday mornings.

The Top 22 has listed most of the 10 new stations listed for AAA. 7 of them are Billboard only noncomms (KUTX, WERS, WFPK, WYEP, WYMS, WTMD and KCSN), the other is KEXP, which wasn't included presumably because of there is only one song they're playing more than six times a week. I've decided to do a mockup of how the top 50 may be impacted with the new stations and... 1 | 1 | 0 | THE NATIONAL | Tropic Morning News | 662 | 2 | 2 | 0 | DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE | Pepper | 586 | 3 | 3 | 0 | THE REVIVALISTS | Kid | 574 | 7 | 4 | 3 | DEPECHE MODE | Ghosts Again | 554 | 5 | 5 | 0 | DAVE MATTHEWS BAND | Madman's Eyes | 520 | 4 | 6 | -2 | LONE BELLOW | Honey | 505 | 6 | 7 | -1 | GOOSE | Hungersite | 491 | 9 | 8 | 1 | BECK | Thinking About You | 458 | 8 | 9 | -1 | THEE SACRED SOULS | Love Is The Way | 440 | 16 | 10 | 6 | BOYGENIUS | Not Strong Enough | 388 | 11 | 11 | 0 | NOAH KAHAN | Homesick | 384 | 10 | 12 | -2 | JOE P | Off My Mind | 374 | 14 | 13 | 1 | THE HEAVY HEAVY | Go Down River | 372 | 12 | 14 | -2 | WHITE REAPER | Pages | 369 | 15 | 15 | 0 | INHALER | Love Will Get You There | 345 | 13 | 16 | -3 | BEACH WEATHER | Sex, Drugs, Etc. | 341 | 17 | 17 | 0 | YEAH YEAH YEAHS | Wolf | 306 | 19 | 18 | 1 | DEVON GILFILLIAN | All I Really Wanna Do | 271 | 27 | 19 | 8 | ARLO PARKS | Weightless | 269 | 20 | 20 | 0 | CHARLEY CROCKETT | Trinity River | 246 | 23 | 21 | 2 | NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING.. | Easy Now | 239 | 26 | 22 | 4 | PORTUGAL. The other station listed I cannot find on AllAccess but they're mostly playing top currents so it'll impact the upper region of the chart more, and it's not listed what the other commercial added would be. It's no surprise that Young the Giant and Beach Weather got hit by this update because most of the noncomms haven't added them. On the upside we see boosts for boygenius, Arlo Parks, Jason Isbell and the New Pornographers, as well as indie artists such as Durand Jones and Bully scraping the chart, and that Everything but the Girl song actually making the top 50. (I'm not so sure if it can last for 11 more days lol since some stations have started to drop it) And obviously the best part is that this'll lower the chances of AAC material being boosted by a few stations making the top 50, lol. Though it could still happen as Joji's max spin count is still enough to make the top 50.

Or at least take their current philosophy of diverse programming and apply it to an HD2 station dedicated to new stuff. That's for sure! I've started listening to Bandtango out of Corpus Christi, they're seriously heavy on newer stuff, rotating as often as many CHRs do. They throw in a few old tunes, but it's not copious; the problem with my local Alt is they're very recurrent/recent-heavy, which is very tiresome, but of course they're trying to skim listeners off CHR and Rock.

Okay so you know how 99X in Atlanta has rebranded a few months back and I originally was very skeptical? The playlist isn't too jaw dropping, just your usual classics, a couple unique cuts, a few deep ones I've seen (especially a Death Cab one on Organic X), but Steve Barnes has been teasing to fans on Facebook that the canned Local X show from a few months back as well as new music WILL be happening, and it looks like they're slowly growing the rebrand, and uhhhh, if they come out with some stupendous adds and a more varied playlist, I am going to be a bit jealous. I already like a bit of the Organic X playlist on Sunday Mornings... On Melancholy Hill from Gorillaz, First Aid Kit, Harmony Hall from Vampire Weekend... San Diegans, 99X might blow 91X's execution of classic/varied alt.

Just for fun, each song's spin and audience percentage increase post MB-panel change. Only for AAA as they had the most stations added and every song that remained in the top 50 gained spins.

here is your list of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductees for 2023. Iron Maiden, Soundgarden ,Joy Division/New Order, Kate Bush , Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliot , Cyndi Lauper , Willie Nelson, The Spinners, Warren Zevon , George Micheal. Rage Against the Machine, the White Stripes andA Tribe Called Quest.
Here are the ones that got got the most votes. George Michael = 1,040,872 , Cyndi Lauper= 928,113 , Warren Zevon= 634,130 , Iron Maiden= 449,682 , Soundgarden= 427,020 .
here are the ones they chose(after they apparantly threw away the real votes in the trash): Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliot, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and the Spinners
The only thing I'm gonna say is that my favorite Pop artist ever....shouldn't be on this list.
So what the hell did they base these results on if not the actual votes?

New video/single:
With "Fence" not even hitting the top 50 and only getting a few adds, and with this song sounding more radio-friendly, I wonder if this one is the *actual* 1st radio single for active rock radio.
Also, it's very possible that with Sevendust joining Alter Bridge on Napalm Records, that active rock radio is way less a part of their promotion strategy than it's been in the past. Ever since Alter Bridge left Roadrunner for Napalm, they suddenly can't chart in the top 15 on active rock after being essentially a staple band who were guaranteed a top 5 single from every record. This newest AB record can't even get its singles to crack the top 20. So something tells me Napalm is paying zilch for active rock radio promo, and the stations that wanna play their singles from Alter Bridge or Sevendust just from them being vets of the format will, and those who'd only play it if promoted to them aren't going out of their way.

On Napalm you say...so touring more often in Europe will be their strategy? Won't complain!

So Block Party Weekend is going on 91X right now, mostly the usual artists from the 90s and 80s, but four other people and I requested Twenty One Pilots. And for the first time since New Years Eve, they got played again. It was a beautiful moment to behold. The Facebook crowd can suck it, Twenty One Pilots IS a 91X staple.
