Even with SUBG peaking before digital was counted, it was the second song to sell a million, right after Hollaback Girl. I think that spoke a lot to how popular the song was overall (for its time). It also mirrored the the album's success pattern in that it racked up its sales steadily during its run. There was never that one week where it (or the album) ever sold a mind-boggling amount for its time or got to #1, but it was wonderfully consistent and that added up to a significant number in the end.
Of course I cannot speak with certainty to how the songs would fare if they were released in 2012, but I do think most of the Breakaway singles would still do well (I think only the title track would do worse on CHR now). Kelly's sound hasn't changed that much from what it was then and we see how well she's doing now, so it's not so far-fetched to think those songs would smash just as much now as they did then, if not more so. At least now there wouldn't be a Candy Shop to get in SUBG's way.

SUBG peaked about a month and a half after digital sales started being incorporated into the Hot 100, didn't it? It was a big seller, "Candy Shop" was just bigger at the time.

SUBG never went #1 on the digital chart though. 50 blocked her there too.

SUBG would be in the group of 5M sellers. In all reality, I'm sure the entire Breakaway era would've done the same as Teenage Dream, only smaller. I still say that album is #2 in the rankings. They are very close.

SUBG never went #1 on the digital chart though. 50 blocked her there too. Exactly. Let's not forget that the 1, 2, 3 punch of Candy Shop, Hollaback Girl, and Gold Digger were #1 digitally for nearly SEVEN MONTHS that year. Aside from Adele, none of the other pop/rock-type singers (not that Adele is pop/rock....just trying to differentiate the genre in comparison to the rest of the current Pop chart makeup) in recent times who have Pop Top 3s have been able to translate those Pop hits into Hot 100 #1s. Stronger is the first (and so far) only example, so it's questionable whether she can, one (do it again) or if this is just an anomaly. It'll be interesting to see.

Would have Teenage Dream sold 6 million copies in 2004/2005 though?

What's going on with Adam Lambert's "Better Than I Know Myself" and Mike Posner's "Looks Like Sex"?? Both catchy, radio-friendly tracks that I thought would be hits.

I have not heard BTIKM, but LLS is definitely not radio-friendly. It seems more like a parody of a Mike Posner track than a Mike Posner track.

You really can't say that if digital sales were higher in the past certain singles would have reached number one or charted higher. It wouldn't just effect the songs we like, you know. No one can say anything for certain, but I disagree that you cannot even speculate. It has nothing to do with liking a song or not as much as it is genre and format based analysis. I think that digital sales truly helped jump start a shift in radio play and formats. For a certain time period, like no pop songs went to #1 because RHY leaning songs always had a huge audience advantage. The increasing power of digital sales led to an immediate shift where, slowly, pop songs or pop-centric songs started going #1 in increasing frequency. Radio play did not change immediately, but once sales data started having more power a pretty quick shift was made that changed both the audience distribution and formats. Furthermore, pop songs tended to do better in sales than urban/RHY centered songs. This is something you can see even today at times. Of course there are always exceptions (I am speaking about trends here), but seeing those shifts happen and looking at the history of the format and the Hot 100 from a genre-based POV leads to a pretty solid ability to say that certain songs WOULD have benefited from the same digital market we have today. Absolutely great post. I remember when Hollaback Girl hit #1 in sales, which was around when Since U Been Gone was also big. It seemed like their success shook radio out of a stupor -- they realized there was an audience for songs outside of the mold they had settled into. 2001-2005 was pretty much dominated by mid-tempo urban/hip-hop tracks, and then we began to see a shift. The past few years have been dominated by the "David Guetta" sound of electro pop but even with that seeming domination there is still a lot more variety at the top of the charts. Adele has just thrown another wrench in things -- it seems like the industry always wants to find a perfect formula and people stubbornly keep being interested in songs that don't always fit a preconceived notion of "hit."

Yes, when digital sales started to take off and people started to use the Internet to find new music, the sound shifted dramatically. In fact, I'm 100% certain that had the Internet never existed, the dance crazy would not exist either.

Can someone post the Fun song's AI tomorrow? Would be interesting to track it, considering its surge in digital sales.

They are very close. The Breakway songs were MASSIVE. Breakaway was on the top 40 for 40 wks, SUBG for 42, BTHE for 30 wks, and BOY for 32 wks. You have to look at more than just peak positions to determine a song's success. Mraz' I'm Yours never hit #1, but was on the top 40 for what, 76 wks?

Yeah - Breakaway spent an entire year in the top 20. The last album from a female to do that previously was ...Baby One More Time.
It was a much bigger "star maker" than Teenage Dream.

Breakaway established Kelly Clarkson as true-blue artist and not just a product of media hype due to A.I. I became a fan during the Breakaway era.
Aside from SUBG, I was also frustrated Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams stalled at #2, was rooting it to reach the top!
2006 was great though, lots of chart movements, and there was no long running #1 (8-12 weeks)

i still remember driving to the gym when i heard SUBG for the very first time...all sped-up on radio...and they announced it as..."here's new Kelly Clarkson...this song rocks!"
:)
I was blown away.

Totally OT, but does a demo version of SUBG exist? I've been a stan since higschool, but I remember my best friend was an even bigger stan than me and gave me a copy of SUBG before it was released, and I remember it sounding wayyy poppier than it actually is... Maybe it was just me reacting to Kelly's new sound, but I feel like it was a demo for some reason.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying, but it really depends how we're looking at this. Do I think that if Breakaway was released now the singles would do substantially better peak-wise? Yes. Do I think that if sales were higher in 2005 they would have? No, perhaps slightly. Whether it's how you personally think, there's definitely a tendency to look back on Pulse classics that peaked apparently anywhere in the top ten and say they'd have gone to number one under different circumstances. It happens with Britney even more. I think it's silly to disregard how huge "Candy Shop" was or how big the five or six songs higher than "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Because Of You" were. It's really weird and skewed to think that in this alternate universe those songs would keep the exact same amount of chart points while Pulse faves would ~slay!!1. It's easy to forget on Pulse that "Candy Shop" was one of the biggest digital sellers of that time too. However, if an album similar to Breakaway came out now, after all the things you said have taken place, then I don't doubt the three middle singles would have got a lot closer to number one, if not gone all the way.

^Tomorrow we will see the first of its few days of decline (with the first of the three-day HEAVY play out of the picture).
Not sure about the Mediabase tally, but Madonna's highest BDS audience peak in the all-formats era (December 1998-present) is "Music" (83 million).

It's "still growing" because today's gain is vs. Thursday 2/2, when it hadn't been released. It's technically impossible for a song to have a loss during its first 7 days. This time next week GMAYL will have about 18-21m audience impressions total, probably, since it's been averaging just under 3m a day since its initial adds.

How many albums have had three singles pass 150m in AI? I have a feeling this will be the first.

Question:
Do all airplay formats use a 7-day rolling chart? BDS?
