Yes, Katy's just in it to troll Adele and Whitney.

1 160 ADELE MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE (ALBUM) 14267 87 7624 818248
Unbelievable sales for an album track (as opposed to a single). Outranked only by Bruno Mars' "Marry You" and Eminem's "'Til I Collapse" in the digital, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, Katy's just in it to troll Adele and Whitney. Sorry, but not everyone cares about Whitney Houston's death. Katy shouldn't have to wait or "back off for a week" and delay her plans. They went full throttle ahead, and so far they are succeeding.

^Then it still isn't a "true top 50". Yep. It becomes something ridiculously subjective and unfair if GME is not allowed to chart in the top 50 if it has enough points. I guess it'd be acceptable if it can only re-enter when it has an increase in points or something.

So I looked it up. The last time Whitney and Madonna were in the top ten together was the week ending 1/27/96. Madonna dropped out a week later while Whitney was in the midst of a long run at #2 after debuting at #1.
1 1 One Sweet Day MARIAH CAREY & BOYZ II MEN 2 2 Exhale (Shoop Shoop) WHITNEY HOUSTON 3 4 Missing EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL 4 3 Hey Lover LL COOL J 5 6 Name GOO GOO DOLLS 6 8 One Of us JOAN OSBORNE 7 5 Breakfast At Tiffany's DEEP BLUE SOMETHING 8 10 You'll See MADONNA 9 11 Before You Walk Out Of My Life / Like This And Like That MONICA 10 16 Be My Lover LA BOUCHE
The week ending 8/22/09 was the last time they appeared on the Hot 100 together, oddly both of them debuted that week and then fell off the next week.
Madonna at #71 with Celebration Whitney ar #74 with I Look To You

I agree with you (my post was sarcasm), Katy (and Capitol) took a risk releasing a song in a week where there was sure to be huge competition, and its paying off spectacularly for her.

Drake replaced himself at #1 on R&B/Hip-Hop with The Motto knocking out Make Me Proud; anybody know the last time an artist did that on the chart (if ever)?

Ditto @ ry4n -- I loathe Breakfast at Tiffany's
Although I'd say the only one that really doesn't stick as something I could easily hum is the Monica song.

The "Breakfast at Tiffany's" song got on my nerves back then too. It and La Bouche are easily my two least favorite on that list.
On the contrary, I hated "One of Us" back then and enjoy it if I hear it now.
I agree that the Monica song is probably the least well known to the general public, but I think Urban listeners would still recognize it instantly.

I also hate One Sweet Day, but Missing is quite possibly my favorite song ever... I will say that top ten is remarkably accurate as a time capsule of that era.

Katy's record company didn't say, oh Whitney died, let's release another single. it's been planned, so nothing wrong with it.
and no one will even remotely remember what was going on the week this song went to #1. Think back 10 years ago, do you remember that grammy week and what song hit #1 and why it did? no.

Without the new "rules", Katy would have debuted at 98, which would have been just one more than Kelly's MLWSWY.

Not necessarily. Only true if you take into consideration those songs that weren't actually bubbling under that got pushed off because of Billboard's bending the rules to favor some artists while others get slighted?

Oh, for crying out loud... Do you honestly think that Billboard would've changed their policy had they not been through this already with Michael Jackson?

Then all it would have taken would be one song that was on the chart last week, that this week ranked lower than the actual #100 song and higher than #1 Bubbling Under, and then Katy would still be #1 Bubbling Under.

You don't know that though. GME might've been like #56 this week for all we know. And that would make it #53 without the Whitney songs, and therefore would've gone recurrent with or without the rule change... (same thing for Colbie's song)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
On a different note, since there's been so many old Top 10's posted lately, gave me an idea... I can do these every week if you guys like ^^

Oh, so if a song has charted on the Hot 100 it can't appear on Bubbling Under anymore?
Didn't know about that.

Oh, for crying out loud... Do you honestly think that Billboard would've changed their policy had they not been through this already with Michael Jackson? I actually agree with the change itself. I don't agree with them waiting until Whitney died to implement the change. Billboard should've done the rule change leading into the next year so they have consistent rules for the entire chart year. No changing things on the fly type stuff. If Michael Jackson was the reason for the rule change, they should've done it at the end of that chart year.

You don't know that though. GME might've been like #56 this week for all we know. I thought someone already posted that Billboard said the rule forced Pitbull to go recurrent this week? Regardless though, the fact that we don't know is my point. We can't say "Katy got robbed of a record" because there are many other variables that we don't know, both in terms of songs dropping out of the Top 50 and the Top 100. Cool seeing those old charts. Last year's stands out as particularly crap, but some of the others look good overall. Seems so odd now that Fall Out Boy peaked so high in 2007. I've completely forgotten that song already.

You have to account for that possibility too.
