Rolling Stone's review of this was awful. 1.5/5 Stars lol. Their "shtick" (I'd rather refer to it as "quirkiness") is what I feel makes them so endearing and refreshing.

I agree with that review for the most part, except that they don't make me hate pop music. Lol.

I knew from the get-go that this would be the kind of group that would get terrible reviews, and I also knew many would find it hard to take them seriously. I suppose I can see why some would think they are annoying, but I actually find their tunes to be really refreshing and catchy. I have to strongly disagree with Rolling Stone about Amy's rapping - I think she's got a really good flow, and unlike most female rappers, she also has an amazing singing voice.

I'd be curious to know whether their fanbase leans more toward the pop side or the rap side. I wouldn't be surprised to find they have more pop-based listeners such as myself; whereas they seem refreshing and catchy to us, they may indeed be "annoying" to someone who's more of a hip-hop and/or rap fan.

They DEFINITELY have more of a pop base. A lot of hip-hop fans find the whole suburban white girl doing tongue in cheek rap covers schtick (how they got noticed in the first place) to be borderline offensive.

I'm sure majority of Karmin's fans are pop listeners. Personally, I find Amy's rapping to be very cute in a "LOL. awww look at the cute white girl trying to rap" kinda way. I definitely don't take her rapping seriously. I do think this group is very talented and a lot of fun though.

LMAO I think Amy is fantastic. I prefer her to Nicki Minaj/Eve/Lil Kim for the simple fact she has cleaner lyrics and IMO a better delivery and that's a big reason hip hop listeners probably don't care for her. They like that dirty delivery and even dirtier lyrics. From what I see there's always competition to come harder and be more shocking than the next act. I think that was a big reason Will Smith was never taken seriously either.

If you call that trying, you must have ridiculously high standards. Even live her flow is really good, and I can understand what she's saying when she raps better than I can understand most rappers. I hate this assumption that because someone is white they must be "trying" to rap as opposed to actually rapping.

I have the sneaking suspicion that people who have taken to Karmin's talents and the duo's ability to not take themselves seriously, or so they think, are the same people who are quick to turn their noses at someone like Ke$ha. I think that was a big reason Will Smith was never taken seriously either. Or, you know, the fact that he's horrible and a cornball.

Amy can spit rhymes better than 45-65% of the rappers on urban radio can. (See the LAMN cover and the bridge in "I Told You So.") They make pop music, sure, but they add in cool raps that are just fun to listen to. She's not trying to rap, she's actually rapping. Excellently. But she gets hated on due to the fact that she's a white pop artist. People who listen to rap call it offensive or stupid. Well, she can actually rap and they can't get that through their thick skulls. Just like Eminem. His music definitely leans more pop than urban, but there's no reason at all he shouldn't be considered a great rapper. He's not, though, and it just irks me.
Rapping is not a genre. It's a skill that can be applied to every music genre. Yet, the general public associates rap with hip-hop/urban music.
I'd definitely consider Amy a rapper. Though, she chooses to make pop music. And she has fun with it! It's not a chore or a job for her, it's just pure fun. That's why I really like her. Nicki is the same way. She doesn't rap to be "hoss," "hard," or give her "street cred." Otherwise "Super Bass" and the second half of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded wouldn't exist. It's appealing to the mainstream more than most other rappers are, and that's why urban lovers hate that. They don't like hearing actual rapping on mainstream radio. So they diss it and try to belittle it and discredit it, when in most cases it's just as genuine as rap in urban music.

I don't think it's anything to do with them being white. Like you said, Nicki isn't respected now. But she did used to be before she switched to pop. It's not difficult to connect the dots - you're not going to get credit from 'urban lovers' for not doing urban music.

That's what I was trying to say. Urban lovers discredit rap artists who do pop music. It just irks me. Rap isn't genre specific. I should've just said that...

See: Caucasian female hip(-hop)ster music blog sensation Iggy Azalea. Perhaps I assumed too much based on Benjamin's post, but the fact that he felt the need to qualify Amy as a white girl implied to me that had something to do with how cute it was she was "trying" to rap. But I've noticed this with Fergie as well. She raps in some of her songs, but people have a hard time calling her a rapper. To me, if you rap, then you can be considered a rapper, just like if you sing, you can be called a singer.

Boo! I'm only here for Too Many Fish as far as singles are concerned. I don't really see anything else with potential to do anything
