HUNGER GAMES THE CHART
Universal Republic Soundtrack Will Break Columbia’s #1 Streak at an Even Dozen
March 21, 2012
Columbia’s chart-topping run, which began in January with Adele, continued with Bruce Springsteen and culminated this week with U.K. boy band One Direction, will end at 12.
Universal Republic’s T Bone Burnett-produced Hunger Games soundtrack, which features the first track by Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars and includes tracks by Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, Miranda Lambert, Kid Cudi and Maroon 5, among others, will debut at #1 on the HITS album chart next Tuesday with an estimated 150-175k in sales. The highly anticipated movie version of the first of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of best-selling dystopian young adult novels opens this Friday.
The following week will be UMG’s as well, with the release of Madonna’s first Interscope album, MDNA.
Columbia will have the week’s other top debut in The Shins’ fine, critically kudo’ed Port of Morrow, slated for between 65-75k, which is substantially less than their last for indie Sub Pop, 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, but better than Broken Bells, leader James Mercer’s collaboration with Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, which sold 49k on its first week in March 2010.
Controversial L.A. rap collective Odd Future arrives with their much-ballyhooed Columbia/RED boe, the curiously titled The Odd Future Tape Vol. 2, which looks set to sell between 35-40k.
SRC/Universal Republic Canadian R&B singer Melanie Fiona returns with The MF Life, her sophomore follow-up to 2009’s The Bridge, with first-week estimates in the 23-27k range.
Concord Best New Grammy winner Esperanza Spaulding’s fourth album, and first since her award, Radio Music Society, should do between 20-23k.
Atlantic rapper Diggy, whose real name is Daniel Dwayne Simmons III, is the fourth child of Run DMC’s Joe “Rev Run” Simmons (brother of Russell) and starred in the MTV reality series, Run’s House. Unexpected Arrival, his major label debut after a series of independently released mixtapes, is also on target for 20-23k.
19/BNA recording artist Casey James, the hard-living singer-songwriter from Cool, TX, who finished third on the 2009 American Idol, is looking at 12-15k in first-week sales for his self-titled debut.

Nooooo Melanie!!! I was hoping for at least 40k. Damn! Me too, but that's not SO bad. If "4 AM" was doing "It Kills Me" type of waves on urban radio, 50K would have been no problem.

I just hope she gets herself out of the urban circle and branch out to sell this record. It is too good to go waste.

Good numbers for The Hunger Games. I bought it yesterday, and I like almost every song on it.

Will The Hunger Games end up wit ha bigger tally? HITS didn't indicate whether it was taking into account the movie opening on Friday and all.

^It did with the wider than normal estimate. It says 150-175k. Right now it looks more like 150k, but with a big opening, it could be 175k?

'Hunger Games' Soundtrack Set for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | o?ujak 21, 2012 6:30 EDT "The Hunger Games" soundtrack is set to debut at No. 1 next week's Billboard 200 chart, so say industry sources. The multi-artist album should sell at least 150,000 to 170,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 25 -- easily enough for a No. 1 entry. If it does arrive atop the list, it will be the first chart-topping theatrical film soundtrack since "Michael Jackson's This Is It" bowed at No. 1 on the tally dated Nov. 14, 2009. 'Hunger Games' Soundtrack: Track-By-Track Review "The Hunger Games" film opens in theaters worldwide on March 23, the first of four planned movies based on the popular series of books. Other albums heading for a high debut on the Billboard 200 include the Shins' "Port of Morrow" and Odd Future's "The OF Tape Vol. 2." Both could start in the top 10. Melanie Fiona's "The MF Life" and Esperanza Spalding's "Radio Music Society" are also looking towards a bow in the top 20 -- perhaps even top 15. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 28. Link

Had they gotten this released much closer to the others of season 9, his sales couldve been nicer. the season 10's already came out, his relevance was lost. They should had this out Early 2011. Then he couldve had closer numbers to Danny Gokey

HITS seems pretty confident about the two chart weeks after this one.
HITS:
Universal Republic's The Hunger Games soundtrack will be the first non-Columbia title in 12 weeks to top the chart as the album appears on track for an opening just shy of 200k. With the film opening tomorrow, a strong weekend box office could potentially help drive sales even higher. UMG will also score the #1 album in the following two weeks as Madonna and Nicki Minaj will both debut on top. Columbia will have five of the Top Six albums next week and although Adele's 21 is no longer #1, it has sold a whopping 2.4 million albums this year alone and will repeat as 2012's best selling album. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*The Hunger Games (Universal Republic) 180-200k Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 125-135k *The Shins (Columbia) 70-75k One Direction (Columbia) 55-60k *Odd Future (Columbia/RED) 40-45k Bruce Springsteen (Columbia) 35-40k Whitney Houston (RCA) 28-32k *Melanie Fiona (SRC/Universal Republic) 27-30k Now 41 (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k fun. (Fueled by Ramen/Atlantic) 21-24k Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 20-23k *Diggy (Atlantic) 20-23k *Esperanza Spaulding (Concord) 20-23k Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 18-21k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 17-20k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 17-20k Kelly Clarkson (19/RCA) 17-20k

Melanie's 2nd album is making an entry with a higher peak and bigger numbers than her debut. :)

Then he couldve had closer numbers to Danny Gokey It was Casey's idea to go about it slow because he wanted to really focus and make a really good album. I really, really like it. The lead single is nearing Top 20 on Hot Country Songs, and with the right follow-up songs released, I think he could establish himself within the country industry much better than Danny Gokey ever did (he got dropped by RCA). I agree that Casey's album would've sold better had it come out a year ago, but he's actually gotten airplay better than Lauren Alaina, and while Scotty has sold very well, his singles peaked at #15 and #17, while Casey is up to #22 and should be top 20 within 2 weeks.

If Brandy gets near or sell 100K, that would be great for her with no hit out now.

'Hunger Games,' Shins and Odd Future Are Top 10 Boundby Keith Caulfield, L.A. | March 23, 2012 7:38 EDT The just-released "The Hunger Games" soundtrack seems to be on a steady course for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week. Industry prognosticators suggest that the album will sell at least 175,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, March 25. Adele's "21" will likely be the runner-up on the tally for a third straight week, while the Shins' new "Port of Morrow" will be the second-highest debut. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 28. On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), "The Hunger Games" is at No. 1 while Adele is hanging out in the No. 2 slot. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. The Shins' last release, 2007's "Wincing the Night Away," debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 2 with 118,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The band's new album isn't going to sell quite as much, as it's on track to move around 70,000 to 80,000. On the Building Chart, it rests at No. 4. As for the rest of the top 10 on the Building chart, One Direction's "Up All Night" is No. 3, Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" is No. 5 and Odd Future's new "The OF Tape, Vol. 2" is No. 6. The "Now 41" compilation is No. 7, Melanie Fiona's new "The MF Life" is No. 8 and fun.'s "Some Nights" is No. 9. Rounding out the top 10 of the Building Chart is Gotye's "Making Mirrors." Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Soundtrack "The Hunger Games" 2 2 Adele "21" 3 1 One Direction "Up All Night" 4 NEW The Shins "Port of Morrow" 5 4 Bruce Springsteen "Wrecking Ball" 6 NEW Odd Future "The OF Tape, Vol. 2" 7 8 Various Artists "Now 41" 8 NEW Melanie Fiona "The MF Life" 9 10 fun. "Some Nights" 10 9 Gotye "Making Mirrors" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales. Link

I'm not familiar with that release schedule but are those release dates usually solid? Is so I'm kind of surprised Brandy isn't releasing in June like she said. But nonetheless I'm glad to see a solid release date.

But nonetheless I'm glad to see a solid release date. Brandy has a role in the Tyler Perry movie "The Marriage Counselor" which hits theaters on Friday, July 27. She will likely be able to secure better media exposure promoting both projects at the same time.

I know they still do okay at the box office, but I'm willing to assume that's just because he has a loyal fanbase, not because the public at large still cares about him.
