In 1972, Timmy Thomas was recording material for his debut album. "Why Can't We Live Together" was a demo he recorded using only a Hammond organ and a simplistic, early drum machine. When it was presented to an executive at his record label, there were plans to record the studio version with a full band. The label ended up having second thoughts however and released the demo Timmy Thomas recorded as the version that would make the album. The song went on to top the Best Selling Soul Singles chart for 2 weeks starting in January 1973 and peaked at #3 on the Hot 100. Following the major success of this single, Timmy Thomas never made the Hot 100 again and only reached the Top 20 of the R&B chart once more.
I love this song. The simplicity is what makes it so special.

Great song. I completely forgot about this one. So appropriate then, so appropriate now. RIP Timmy Thomas.
