This scored Martika her only #1 hit back in 1989. I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
What's happened to her since?
She released her 2nd album "Martika's Kitchen" which spawned a minor hit. But when the 2nd single only peaked at #98 and the album peaked at #102, she was dropped from her label.
Since then, I have no idea.
Still, love this song though.

I didn't like this song until years after it fell off the charts. I'm OK with it now.

Chebingeo, let me guess: You got the idea to post about this song after Rick Dees played a drop piece of the song on his show, right? This was my favorite number one song of 1989. On my homemade version of R&R's charts, I was able to give it number one for the year. That's what was so good about the PPW era, the chart runs of the songs were pretty even and in some cases, songs close to number 40 on R&R's year end charts would be number one on mine. When you mentioned "Martika's Kitchen", I'm assuming that the "minor single" you were talking about was "Love...Thy Will Be Done", right? If so, I wouldn't exactly call it a minor hit, seeing that it peaked at #10 (unless it peaked lower on Billboard, but I'm not sure). And I remember the follow-up "Martika's Kitchen", which sounded rather mediochre, but I loved the line "I'll even let you break the dishes" - LOL!

She had a string of really good songs. This was great, she did a totally fun version of 'I fell the earth move' and 'Love.. They will be done' was an absolutely gorgeous and much underrated Gem of a song.
Then it all kinda went to shit...

Catchy song from 1989... this shouldn't have blocked Madonna's Express Yourself from #1 on the Hot 100 though

I remember when "Express Yourself" first came out, it was making monster moves on the R&R chart (32-21-11, etc.) and I felt sure this was going to follow in the footsteps of "Like A Prayer", but that was not to be, as it spent a month at number three and fell pretty fast.

Although I like the song, I've always had a grudge against songs that keep Madonna from #1.
"Miss You Much" did the same thing to "Cherish" in Billboard.

I don't like it. It's annoying. Hey... the last oh 6,7 posts I have read today about songs have had one from you saying "I don't like it."... and most all of them are songs I liked or still like. That's cool and all... as we must have very different tastes in music. I just rarely post anything on something I just "don't like"! I will check your chart to see what you DO like!

I heard this song for the first time on the weekend I graduated from high school. I loved it right away. My friends disliked the song however. My Mom overheard me playing this song and inquired about it. She liked it as well, which was a rarity, because she was beyond the age of liking pop music.

Ryan Seacrest played a drop of it. He said that the last "Soldier" hit to make the Top 40 prior to "Solider" by Destiny's Child was "Toy Soldiers." And he commented that he liked the song.

I still play it to this day quite a bit... one of the best songs to come out in 1989 for sure... was my personal favorite for about 3 months straight! "Love... Thy Will Be Done" is very underrated as is "More Than You Know"... both very catchy and memorable tunes as well... It's too bad more didn't come of Martika as I always thought she was very talented...

I actually heard this song on the radio for the first time Saturday night on WSNE, a local Hot AC station. Hit #1 on BB and R&R. I like the slow verses and the way the soft music sounds up until the chorus. Pretty good song IMO. I wonder if there's anyone who didn't even know Eminem sampled this?
