www.billboard.com/news#/news/adam-lambert-snags-first-no-1-album-on-billboard-1007130952.storyAdam Lambert Snags First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | May 23, 2012 For the first time, one "American Idol" replaces another at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as Adam Lambert's "Trespassing" debuts atop the list with 77,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. His arrival bumps last week's leader, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away," down to No. 3 (54,000; down 55%). It's Lambert's first No. 1 album and is his second major label studio set. It follows 2009's "For Your Entertainment," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 198,000 sold in its first week. It was blocked from No. 1 by Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" (a debut at No. 1 with 701,000) and Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" at No. 2 (218,000). "Trespassing's" 77,000 start is the smallest sum at No. 1 on the chart since the tally dated Aug. 20, 2011, when Adele's "21" sold 76,000 in its 12th nonconsecutive week atop the list. "Trespassing" has the smallest sales week for a No. 1 debut since Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" started in the penthouse with 40,000 on the Feb. 12, 2011 chart. Lambert is the seventh "American Idol" finalist to reach No. 1, following Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Underwood, Chris Daughtry (of Daughtry) and Scotty McCreery. Further, as an "Idol" finalist rules the chart for the third straight week, it's the longest that "Idol" has monopolized the No. 1 slot. We've had two-week runs atop the list, but always from a singular album -- like Underwood the past two weeks with "Blown Away." Right behind Lambert on the Billboard 200 this week is Adele's "21," which holds at No. 2 with 63,000 (down 38%). Norah Jones' "Little Broken Hearts" is up one rung to No. 4 with 45,000 (down 24%). Comedy rock duo Tenacious D (comprised of actors Jack Black and Kyle Glass) debuts at No. 5 with "Rize of the Fenix," selling 44,000. It's the act's highest charting album yet (44,000) after hitting No. 8 in 2006 with "The Pick of Destiny" soundtrack at No. 33 in 2001 with its self-titled debut. The "Now 42" album is down two slots to No. 6 with 42,000 (down 36%) while Beach House's "Bloom" starts at No. 7 with a career-high sales week of 41,000. It's also a new chart high for the act, which had never visited the top 40 with two earlier entries. At No. 8, the "Glee, the Music: Season Three - The Graduation Album" bows with 39,000. It's the 14th top 10 for the Fox TV ensemble, but it's the lowest sales debut (39,000) for a full-length "Glee" album (not including its live movie soundtrack). Rounding out the top 10 are Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" (3-9 with 39,000; down 45%) and One Direction's "Up All Night" (7-10 with 34,000; down 15%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, we have a new No. 1. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" jumps two spots to No. 1, selling 293,000 downloads (up 25%). Jepsen performed the track on Sunday night's (May 20) 2012 Billboard Music Awards, which may have aided the song's sales bump. It also rises 9-7 on the Pop Songs airplay chart. Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) slips 1-2 with 289,000 (down 10%) and Maroon 5's "Payphone" (featuring Wiz Khalifa) falls 2-3 with 282,000 (down 4%). Nicki Minaj's "Starships" flies 6-4 (174,000; up 15%) and fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) holds at No. 5 (162,000; down 2%). Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) is up one slot to No. 6 (152,000; up 1%) and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" is down 4-7 (144,000; down 13%). One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" is stationary at No. 8 (141,000; down 4%), Train's "Drive By" motors up 12-9 (109,000; up 19%) and Jennifer Lopez's "Dance Again" (featuring Pitbull) is down 9-10 (107,000; up 3%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending May 20) totaled 5.09 million units, down 9% compared to the sum last week (5.58 million) and down 6% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (5.41 million). Year to date album sales stand at 117.40 million, down 2% compared to the same total at this point last year (119.19 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.95 million downloads, down less than 1% compared to last week (24.96 million) and down 2% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.28 million). Year to date track sales are at 545.30 million, up 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (511.44 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" crashed in at No. 1 with 1.1 million copies sold in its first week

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-may-20-2012-albums-back-back-153016791.htmlWeek Ending May 20, 2012. Albums: Back-To-Back Idols By Paul Grein | Chart Watch Adam Lambert's Trespassing enters The Billboard 200 at #1, displacing Carrie Underwood's Blown Away. This marks the first time that artists who rose to fame on American Idol have had back-to-back #1 albums. Lambert was the runner-up on Season 8. Underwood was the winner on Season 4. Lambert is the second Idol runner-up to land a #1 album, following Clay Aiken. One other Idol "loser" has topped the chart: Chris Daughtry, who finished fourth in Season 4. Lambert's 2009 debut album For Your Entertainment debuted and peaked at #3. But it sold more than twice as many copies in its first week (198K) as Trespassing did this week (77K). Two factors explain the disparity. For Your Entertainment was released in November, when the holiday sales season is heating up. Also, Lambert's Idol fame was more immediate then. The sales tally for Trespassing is the slimmest for a #1 album since Adele's 21 held the top spot with sales of just 76K in August. It's the most anemic for an album debuting at #1 since Amos Lee's Mission Bell opened with sales of just 40K in January 2011. Trespassing sold 29K digital copies (included in the overall tally), which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. "Whataya Want From Me," the biggest hit from For Your Entertainment, cracked the top 10 in May 2010 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. It has sold 1,905,000 copies to date. The title track from the new album enters Hot Digital Songs at #178. Blown Away drops to #3 after two weeks at #1. It jumps to #10 on Nielsen SoundScan's year-to-date album sales chart. It's the best-selling album so far this year by a "core" country artist. (Lionel Richie being a non-"core" country artist. See next item.) Lionel Richie's Tuskegee this week pulls ahead of Whitney Houston's Whitney: The Greatest Hits to become the second best-selling album so far in 2011. (Adele's 21 is way out front.) At the beginning of this year, no one would predicted that either Houston or Richie would have a best-seller. Richie got one via a music/TV crossover triumph that must be deeply gratifying. Houston got one via a tragedy that is still hard to comprehend. Tuskegee may well wind up in the top 10 on Billboard's year-end sales recap. It would mark Richie's first appearance in a year-end top 10 in 28 years. His solo debut album, Lionel Richie, was the #6 album of 1983. His sophomore release, Can't Slow Down, was #3 for 1984. Tuskegee drops from #3 to #9 this week. This is its eighth week in the top 10. That equals the mark set by Frank Sinatra's Duets in 1993. Only one "Duets" album has logged more weeks in the top 10 than these two albums. That's Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company, which spent 13 weeks in the top 10 in 2004-2005. Adele's 21 holds at #2. Adele didn't attend the Billboard Music Awards, even though she was a cinch to sweep the awards. I can appreciate that Adele is probably tired of picking up awards for this album. She has probably run out of clever things to say and is probably starting to worry about overexposure. But everybody has to do things sometimes that they don't want to do. When you're the hottest artist on the planet, showing up when Billboard (or the Grammys) wants to shower you with awards is something you just can't skip. Adele, I assure you the "problem" of all these awards shows wanting to fete you is a "problem" that will go away by itself soon enough. It always does. So next time, show up. Tenacious D's Rize Of The Fenix debuts at #5. This is the comedy/rock duo's second studio album to make the top 10., The Pick Of Destiny reached #8 in 2006. The duo consists of actor Jack Black and Kyle Gass. (Grand Funk Railroad and Dan Fogelberg each had a top 10 album titled Phoenix, but they both spelled it correctly. How old-school!) Glee: The Music: The Graduation Album debuts at #8. This is the 14th Glee album to reach the top 10. It enters Top Soundtracks at #1. All 14 of these Glee TV albums have topped the soundtrack chart. For those keeping track, and I think that would pretty much just be me, this equals the number of top 10 albums achieved by Mitch Miller & the Gang, a somewhat similar music-on-TV phenomenon from 50 years ago. (The Miller albums hit the top 10 from 1958 to 1962. The TV show ran from 1961 to 1964. So the show was on the air and selling tons of albums for just one year, 1961.) Nine Donna Summer songs enter Hot Digital Songs in the wake of her death last week. The Oscar-winning "Last Dance" leads the way (38K). Here are the others: "On The Radio" (19K), "Hot Stuff" (16K), "She Works Hard For The Money" (16K), "Bad Girls" (13K), "Love To Love You Baby" (12K), "MacArthur Park" (11K), "Dim All The Lights" (11K) and "Heaven Knows" (10K). There are some killer records in there. Four Summer compilations re-enter The Billboard 200, topped by On The Radio—Greatest Hits—Volumes I & II at #74. R.I.P, Donna. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" jumps from #3 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (293K), dethroning "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which dips to #2 (289K). What will happen on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums. The Top Five: Adam Lambert's Trespassing debuts at #1 (77K). It's his first #1 album; his second to make the top 10… Adele's 21 holds at #2 for the second week in its 65th week on the chart (63K). The former #1 album has been in the top 10 the entire time… Carrie Underwood's Blown Away drops to #3 in its third week after two weeks at #1 (54K). The album holds at #1 on Top Country Albums for the third week… Norah Jones' …Little Broken Hearts rebounds from #5 to #4 in its third week (45K)… Tenacious D's Rize Of The Fenix debuts at #5 (44K). This is the duo's second top 10 album. The Second Five: Now 42 drops from #3 to #6 in its second week (42K)…Beach House's fourth album Bloom debuts at #7 (41K). It's the duo's first top 10 album…Glee: The Music: The Graduation Album debuts at #8 (39K). This is the 14th Glee album to reach the top 10…Lionel Richie's Tuskegee drops from #3 to #9 in its eighth week (39K). The former #1 album has been in the top 10 the entire time… …One Direction's Up All Night drops from #7 to #10 in its 10th week (34K). The former #1 album has been in the top 10 the entire time. Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Silversun Pickups' Neck Of The Woods drops from #6 to #25, Jack White's Blunderbuss drops from #8 to #12, Tank's This Is How I Feel tanks (sorry) from #9 to #37 and Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines drops from #10 to #14. Two of the best-selling album acts in history return to the top 20 this week. Santana's Shape Shifter debuts at #16. Willie Nelson's Heroes bows at #18. This is Santana's 15th top 20 album (not counting a pair of albums that Carlos Santana recorded on his own with Buddy Miles (in 1972) and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin (in 1973). This is Nelson's fifth top 20 album (counting a pair of collabos with Waylon Jennings and Wynton Marsalis). (Remember that country was under-represented on the chart in the years before Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991). Santana first cracked the top 20 in October 1969 with the album Santana. Nelson first cracked the top 20 in March 1978 with Waylon & Willie, a collabo with Waylon Jennings. Garbage's Not Your Kind Of People debuts at #17, based entirely on digital sales. All five of the band's studio albums have cracked the top 20. Garbage received a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist of 1996…Godsmack's Live And Inspired debuts at #19. This is the band's sixth top 20 album. Adele's 2008 album 19 drops from #20 to #33 in its 135th week. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 39th week. (If Donna Summer fans had all settled on one compilation rather than dividing their sales among the four that re-enter this week's chart, it would have sold 18K copies this week and would have placed right around #18 on the chart, which would have made it the week's #1 catalog album.) Lisa Marie Presley's Storm & Grace debuts at #45, despite a performance last week on American Idol. This is a disappointing debut: Presley's first two albums both reached the top 10. Presley is 44, two years older than her father Elvis Presley was when he died. It can't be easy to be the daughter of the King of Rock and Roll (and the ex-wife of King of Pop). I give Presley credit for surviving the circus. Marvel's The Avengers was #1 at the box-office for the third straight weekend. The soundtrack drops from #28 to #51 in its third week. It has sold 50K copies, a pittance compared to the movie's grosses…The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond rebounds from #51 to #32 in its ninth week. It's the top-ranking soundtrack to a theatrically-released film for the sixth week. Pantera's 1992 album Vulgar Display Of Power re-enters the chart at #48. This nearly matches the album's original peak at #44. The album has sold 2,177,000 copies…The Broadway cast album from Newsies debuts at #73. The musical is based on 1992 movie starring Christian Bale. The soundtrack to that movie reached #149 on the chart. Adele's Live At The Royal Albert Hall holds at #1 on Top Music Videos for the 24th time in the past 25 weeks. The DVD sold 9K copies this week, which brings its total to 862K. Coming Attractions: John Mayer's Born And Raised is expected to debut at #1 next week. Also due: Sara Bareilles' EP Once Upon Another Time, MercyMe's The Hurt & The Healer, Slash's Apocalyptic Love, Kris Allen's Thank You Camellia, Kimbra's Vows, Haley Reinhart's Listen Up!, The Cult's Choice Of Weapon Jon McLaughlin's Promising Promises, and Paul McCartney's Ram deluxe edition.

Well that's a bit disrespectful. She is British, she doesn't HAVE TO fly to Las Vegas to attend an event where a magazine hands her some trophies. The problem with Billboard Awards is that they're nothing more than just trophies. The acts getting those awards are already proven to be successful and the award show has nothing to do with the quality of your music or industry's respect (compared to BRITs and Grammys). The winners have already proved that they're popular, they don't NEED those awards to show it.

I feel like the Billboards are pretty much like the Nickelodeon awards based on ratings and credibility. Adele has always shown up for the awards shows that matter.

The Billboard Awards always have had lower ratings than other awards shows. It is odd that Adele didn't even bother to attend, though.
MTV.com on Donna Summer's albums:
In the days after her death, disco diva Donna Summer
was back on the charts, with 1979's greatest hits double-disc On the Radio running up to #74 (6,000), followed by three other singles compilations at #90 (5,000), #95 (5,000) and #194 (2,000).

Why does Billboard think it's a good look to mouth off to Adele? Do they think people have loyalty to Billboard over Adele? I thought that was obnoxious. I would've liked an Adele performance on Sunday but she probably made the right choice by not attending. This kinda confirms that the fact that the BMA's didn't say a word about Adele was a bitter move.

Why does Billboard think it's a good look to mouth off to Adele? Paul Grein is Yahoo, not Billboard.

Why does Billboard think it's a good look to mouth off to Adele? Paul Grein is Yahoo, not Billboard. Well then haha.... Didn't he used to be at Billboard? Either way...anyone who wants to take on Adele in this era, be my guest. She'll likely win. She gave the finger to The Brits (?) and they apologized.

Billboard.com:
Donna Summer's Album Sales Skyrocket 3,277% Following Death
May 23, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield
The late Donna Summer impacts Billboard's music charts this week, following her death from cancer on May 17.
As Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week ended on May 20, Billboard's new sales charts reflect only four days since Summer's passing. (SoundScan provides data to Billboard for its music chart rankings.)
On the Billboard 200 albums chart, Summer hits the tally with four albums. She re-enters the list with her former No. 1, "On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II" at No. 73. It sold 6,000 copies last week -- a gain of 10,761% over the previous seven days.
She also debuts on the list with "Endless Summer: Donna Summer's Greatest Hits" (No. 90 with 5,000; up 43,045%), re-enters with "The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer" (No. 95 with 5,000; up 3,819%) and bows "Greatest Hits" (No. 194 with 2,000; up 3,842%).
Summer's catalog of albums sold 26,000 last week -- up 3,277% from 1,000 the week previous.

The overall sales volume isn't far off the SoundScan-era low. Next week's numbers should b e healthier.

What makes Florence + the Machine sell so well? she is still a relatively new indie artist and she doesn't have big radio crossover hit, does she? she's selling more like those indie veterans Black Keys and Jack White.

"Dog Days" obviously helped Lungs become a massive hit, and it was just such a good album that she built a real devoted fanbase with it. Ceremonials is getting continued fabulous word-of-mouth, so all it takes is a little bit of airplay on their key formats to keep the album selling.

How much did she sell? I can't find her anywhere. She sold 1,911 copies, in addition to the 24 street date violations last week. That's god enough for #23 on rap albums, and no debut on the Billboard 200.
