I'm not sure, but it seems non-demand streaming is a separate part: digitalmusic.org/blog/on-demand-songs-chart/"The Hot 100 formula, in addition to tracking terrestrial radio and digital track sales, will now account for the streaming data that makes up the On-Demand Songs chart, as well as non-demand radio streams from Rhapsody and Slacker. The chart rankings will also measure plays on video request service Akoo and audio on-demand streams from MySpace and Guvera. Yahoo! radio streams and Yahoo! on-demand video plays, which were previously part of the Hot 100 formula, will continue to contribute to the chart’s ranking. The streaming data is provided to and processed by Nielsen BDS, which provides music research and monitoring services for the entertainment industry." www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat/ask-billboard-what-are-the-billboard-200-1006510352.story"As far as online radio, the Hot 100 does include radio streams from Slacker (which includes AOL Radio, as AOL programs that service, as well), Rhapsody and Yahoo!. Because these streams are considered passive and not active (or, on-demand), they are assigned a lesser weight than on-demand streams." The "old" streaming was usually a very small part of the points. I'm also keeping track of all the info Billboard is posting and I'm waiting for more data. Maybe in the future we'll be able to estimate more accurate weights for Sales/Radio/On-Demand.

If non-demand streaming is a component of the Hot 100, why do we always find out sales, airplay, and on-demand numbers, but we never find out non-demand streaming? It seems to me that it would be in Billboard's interest to make the formula as transparent as possible.

With "Maybe" up by 7% in overall Hot 100 points and "Somebody" down by 4%, Jepsen continues to narrow the gap between the chart's top two titles, likely setting up a closer battle for next week's No. 1 song. Could we figure out the formula from this? I've been doing some math based on this information, and it seems like the weighting could be... Sales - 1 (per thousand sales) Airplay - 3.24 (per million impressions) Streaming - 1.29 (per ten thousand streams) Using these numbers does make those percentage increases and decreases work, but we may need numbers for other songs before we could verify. This does seem to work better than mine when it comes to rough figures for "Home" and "Where Have You Been" (thank you cesarams for that idea). Great work. :)

Interesting. Based on your formula, 324k sales = 100 million Audience. In the past, 100k sales = 100 million Audience. That's a significant change in the formula (without even considering streaming yet). :o I'm pissed that Billboard is counting airplay so much in the new formula. Simple rule of thumb to estimate the new Hot 100: - multiple airplay by ~3 - divide streaming by ~10 Has Pulse finally cracked the secret Hot 100 formula??

Actually (and sadly, for us wanting to crack the new Hot100 formula), no: You see, going by what you posted (that you multiply airplay by 3 and divide streaming by 10) , the chart for the date 4/21/12 gives us this: #1 WAY: 390 sales + 360 radio + 110 streaming = 860 #2 STIUTK: 311 + 183 + 100 = 594 #3 GYC: 209 + 318 + 66 = 593 #4 WMYB: 294 + 126 + 61 = 481 So far so good, by here is the part were it all comes undone: # 5 Boyfriend: 295 + 162 + 29 = 486 So, no.

Perhaps passive streaming made up the difference?

I think is more
- multiply Airplay by 2 - divide streaming by 10
Going by that, it fits:
The Chart of 4/21/12:
#1 WAY: 390 sales + 240 radio + 110 streaming = 740 #2 STIUTK: 311 + 122 + 100 = 533 #3 GYC: 209 + 212 + 66 = 487 #4 WMYB: 294 + 84 + 61 = 439 # 5 Boyfriend: 295 + 108 + 29 = 432
And:
This week
#1 STIUTK: 264 + 276 + 110 = 650 #2 CMM: 301 + 172 + 100 = 573
Last week:
#1 STIUTK: 289 + 274 + 120 = 683 #2 CMM: 293 + 148 + 98.9 = 539.9
4% of 683 is 27.32 7% of 539.9 is 37.793
683 - 27.32 = 655.68 539.9 + 37.793 = 577.693
As one can see 655.68 > 650 and, 577.693 > 573, so it doesn't quite fit.....
BUT, as we all know, Billboard doesn't give the exact numbers and rounds them to their nearest decimal.
So the 120 streaming of STIUTK of last week, could be any number in between 116-124 or so. And the 100 of this week could be 106-114.
For CMM last week's numbers are pretty accurate (they gave streaming as 989,000 = 98.9. But this week's could be any number in between 96-104/5.
Playing with all the possible combinations, then it fits the up by 7% and down by 4%.
2c.

Plus, I'll sleep better knowing that Billboard only doubled instead of tripled the Airplay points.... lol!!!!

Why should Billboard make the formula known? We've seen weeks where the points were so close, and labels pulled out all the stops to get their track to No. 1 (or whatever the case may be). Now, you don't really know- and that's great. :)
The On-Demand component is worth a lot more than the streaming points were/are, looking at how the chart has been playing out recently.

Based on the limited data we have so far, all the rankings work out well with this proposed formula. We'll need more data in future weeks to further test this, but I think we've got this secret formula about 90% cracked.
