Who knows?
From the reaction I've seen on the internet I believe he would've easily sold a few thousand at the very least but that positioning says otherwise. Ofcourse the chart position is based on official numbers, so perhaps some sales have occured by did not meet the chart rules etc.
He barely did any visable promo so I dont know what he expected (to pull a Beyonce? lol). Also as far as I'm aware, it's still not available internationally (I'm still waiting), so there is still potential for international sales if he plans to do so.
Surely it's better to be on a major/inde label and take less % per sale but make more money due to higer sales, than to take 100% of low sales? I guess he's hoping to make his money by touring and you can only tour off the same 2 albums for so long before people stop coming. I guess he was just frustrated with the politics of the 2 label situations he was in and decided not to go down that route again and this way he can release music without being blocked (like he was previously).
The positive I can take from this current situation is that after a long 5 year wait, I can finally listen to new J. holiday music. If he was still trying with a label, I may not be able to say this.
Those that have actually heard this have given this positive reviews (4* & 4.5* reviews) or really like it so its not a problem of terrible music, just promotion. I geuss he's always had that problem, under-promoted. I don't know what his team was thinking, releasing an album TOTALLY INDEPENDENT and having no obvious promotion. He didn't even appear on 106&Park, the bare minimum! Why are they not going to radio stations and promoting him like a brand new artist?

The album sounds like he hasn't missed a beat. It just has NO visibility for people who don't follow him on Twitter or Instagram to know it even exists.

The thing that is most disheartening about this to me is that pretty much nobody cares about J. Holiday. Like you said outside of his Twitter/Instagram/Facebook fans nobody knows about his new stuff, but I don't think most care.
From what I get when I look on the internet or speak to people most don't really listen to his music much, they might know Bed, Suffocate and possibly It's Yours but that is it. If your lucky you'll find some the will vaguely remember Back Of My Lac and even less that know Round 2. Ultimately that goes back to being under-promoted during those eras, but how can you go from a massive song like Bed to nobody caring 3 years later even when you've given 2 very solid albums?
I know R&B has declined, but if you compare him to his contemporaries (e.g. Trey Songz) there is no good reason why there should be such a difference. Imo. if we are talking about music only, J. Holiday is a better R&B artist than Trey. Trey however does thing outside of pressing the play button to make you think he is better (appearance, branding etc.). I know people who will listen to a pretty average Trey (or even Chris) album/song and consider it great and won't even give J. Holiday the time of day because they consider him irrelevant (even if it is better). THAT'S CRAZY TO ME! BTW I don't consider everything J. Holiday does as great, I just believe he is more consistent than most other male R&B artists.
Anyway, I guess I've known this for some time, but I've always refused to acknowledge it.

A day after the above post J Holiday tweeted and facebook'd this:
lol @ the #relevant bit, after yesterday I said other people don't consider him relevant.
As far as I'm aware, this is like the first televised appearance he's made since the album dropped.
Anyone know if the Arsenio Hall Show is a big look these days? Ratings etc.

OK so did anybody even bother to check this out? What do y'all think?
I haven't listened to this enough to say for definite how I would rank it (against his other albums) but there are easily a good 5 or 6 songs I like and I would also mention that I don't think there are any bad/terrible songs which turn me off.
I also love the fact that the whole album tells a story (without even needing interludes to connect it together), it's not something you see/hear everyday. Having said that, now that J. has done that on this album, I would like the next album to just be a collection of great songs. I love storytelling in R&B and J. Holiday has always done this.
Out of the new songs (not on the sampler) my favorite has to be "Dumb"!
My faves (so far, in order of album appearance): Incredible After We F Guilty Conscience Dumb Come Back Home Heaven

This album has some really solid R&B songs on it that could gain traction at radio if he had proper support. He really should've tried to align with an established indie imprint instead of doing everything himself.

Bought this album a month ago after saw the video for "Where Are You Now" and WOW! Such a great album! Every song is so delicate. "Ms. Get Around" and "Cloud 9" are my current favorite.

This album was criminally slept on. One of the best R&B albums of 2014 period!

All three of his previous albums were good but the production/mix/master on this is leaving a lot to be desired. Apparently it’s just a mixtape and his next album, Time, is coming 2021.
