Despite breaking numerous of records & achieving massive success w/this album, as a whole, it's just okay.

I find myself listening to this more than Thriller. Doesn't mean I think it's better.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as Thriller or Off The Wall.

Love all the singles (including video single "Liberian Girl"), but the non-singles were weak. Still a great pop album. As far as outtakes go, I like "Fly Away" and "I'm So Blue".

One thing I will say about this album is that it's dated horribly. It sounds every bit of 25 years old. Thriller sounds more fresh than this album.

This was a calculated attempt at going for a hits-based release, which Thriller kind of was, but it wasn't so much and he seemed to fit with the times on that one. Here he was kind of treading on other trends. It's not bad but doesn't hold up a lot with repeated listens. I actually like it the least of his 4 big Sony albums.

Probably my second favorite album by Michael, behind Dangerous.
Just Good Friends is my favorite track.

I have a love-hate relationship with this album, I think it sounds quite dated and has some annoying filler, on the other hand I like listening to it and some of the tracks like Man In The Mirror or Smooth Criminal are awesome.
One thing that does not help this album is that literally every MJ compilation is so Bad-heavy that you're better off listening to them since they contain the important tracks from it.

Do you guys consider JUST GOOD FRIENDS to be filler? : ( I think most people do but I love that song! It's so energetic and fun, the bridge and the last chorus are SO exciting.

I've always been surprised this album didn't sell better. Not that it sold poorly, but he was huge following Thriller, and the album produced hit after hit. It should at least have gone 10x platinum back then and be 15-20x platinum now.

Thriller really was an anomaly in his career if you look at his album sales before and after it:
Off The Wall - 8x Platinum
Thriller - 33x Platinum
Bad - 10x Platinum
Dangerous - 7x Platinum (I believe this is under-certified - should be closer to 8 or 9x Platinum)
His sales were fairly consistent between each album prior to the '93 scandal if you exclude Thriller. He also suffered some big backlash after Thriller in the media with stories of hyperbaric chambers and elephant man bones and just general popularity backlash. Plus, he had been in the public eye for 17 years by the time Bad dropped. A lot of uphill battles had to be won with Bad.

Just Good Friends is a throwaway, and Speed Demon is HORRENDOUS! Probably his worst track from his peak run pre-allegations. Worse than any of the sappy ballads.
The rest is solid. It has probably aged the most of his albums, but it is what it is.

Here's Billboard magazine for 1/14/1989: www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/80s/1989/BB-1989-01-14.pdfSmooth Criminal, the final single from Bad, had moved into its peak position of #7 on the Hot 100. On the Billboard 200, Bad was at #42. 69 weeks on the chart. Certified 6xP. Other big sellers on the BB200 that week: Guns "N Roses, Appetite for Destruction, 73 weeks, 6xP Def Leppard, Hysteria, 74 weeks, 8xP George Michael, Faith, 61 weeks, 6xP U2, The Joshua Tree, 94 weeks, 5xP Whitney Houston, Whitney, 82 weeks, 6xP I think Bad sold comparable to what other big albums sold at the time.

Good article, but MJ was crazy if he thought Bad was going to sell 30xP!! www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7948954/michael-jackson-bad-hot-100-five-number-one-hitsHow Michael Jackson's 'Bad' Became the First Album To Notch Five Billboard Hot 100 No. 1sIt's not Jackson's most famous album, but 'Bad' achieved something none of his -- or anyone else's -- albums had before. Thirty years ago today -- on Aug. 31, 1987 -- Michael Jackson debuted one of the most anticipated albums in the history of pop music: Bad, the follow-up to 1982's Thriller, which had already been certified 20-times platinum by the RIAA upon its successor's release, well on its way to becoming the best-selling album of all time...

This probably has the most dated production of any of his major albums. It's very much of it's time and sounds a little chintzy now in places. But overall, it's a solid set of tracks. I can't even imagine the pressure they were under after a behemoth like Thriller.
"The Way You Make Me Feel," "Another Part Of Me," "Dirty Diana," "Smooth Criminal" and "Leave Me Alone" are the highlights for me. "Liberian Girl" has such an awesome instrumental, love it mainly because of that. I've always been kind of borderline with "Bad." The song is undeniable, but much like "Thriller," it's kind of cheesy and so tied to the visual, that I don't revisit it too much on it's own. I really have to be in the mood for it. "Man In The Mirror" is iconic, I don't revisit it that often (that goes for most of his ballads). "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" is just okay, such a bizarre first single choice. "Speed Demon" and "Just Good Friends" are harmless filler.
