Billboard.biz: Linkin Park Tops Maroon 5, Scores Fifth No. 1 Album With 'Living Things' July 04, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield ( keith_caulfield), Los Angeles As projected last week, Linkin Park debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with its new album, "Living Things," ahead of the also-debuting "Overexposed" by Maroon 5 at No. 2. However, the race for No. 1 turned out to be much closer than initially expected. Linkin Park starts with 223,000 while Maroon 5 enters with 222,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. A little over 1,000 copies sold separates the two titles -- the smallest gap between Nos. 1 and 2 on the chart since the Dec. 11, 2011 tally. That week, the gap was less than 1,000 between the top two rungs. Nickelback's "Here and Now" debuted at No. 2 with just under 227,000, while Michael Buble's "Christmas" rose 2-1 with a little more than 227,000. Linkin Park's "Living Things" secures the band its fifth No. 1 on the chart. In the span of time since 2000 -- when Linkin Park debuted on the Billboard 200 -- no other band has had more No. 1 albums. Linkin Park's previous studio effort, "A Thousand Suns," was released in 2010 and also bowed at No. 1 -- with 241,000. Of the act's five studio releases, all but its first reached No. 1. That album, 2000's "Hybrid Theory," peaked at No. 2 for four nonconsecutive weeks in early 2002. Though it never hit No. 1, "Hybrid Theory" did finish 2001 as that year's top selling album. In addition to four No. 1 studio sets, Linkin Park also earned a No. 1 album with its Jay-Z collaboration effort "MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups Presents: Collision Course." In the runner-up slot on the Billboard 200 this week is Maroon 5, with its new album "Overexposed." It's the band's fourth studio album, and follows 2010's "Hands All Over." The latter set also bowed (and peaked) at No. 2, selling 142,000 in its first week. "Overexposed's" start marks Maroon 5's best sales week for an album since 2007's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" debuted at No. 1 with 429,000. That large sum was driven by the band's building success over the previous five years, thanks to the steady sales of its debut album "Songs About Jane." That album was released in June of 2002, though it didn't reach a Billboard chart until December of that year. "Overexposed" comes after a very buzzworthy year for Maroon 5. In April of 2011, the group's frontman Adam Levine debuted as a coach on NBC's breakout TV show "The Voice." Shortly thereafter, he notched a No. 4 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 as the featured guest on Gym Class Heroes' single "Stereo Hearts." Also last summer, Maroon 5 teamed with Levine's fellow "Voice" coach Christina Aguilera for the Hot 100 No. 1 "Moves Like Jagger." The group followed that up with its current hit, "Payphone," the lead single from "Overexposed." It has reached No. 2 on the Hot 100. Back on the Billboard 200, last week's No. 1 album, Justin Bieber's "Believe," falls to No. 3 with 115,000 (down 69%). At No. 4, the "Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made 2" compilation album starts with 98,000. The first "Self Made" set arrived almost a year ago, and bowed at No. 5 with 59,000. The new effort includes Wale's current top 20 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs hit "Bag of Money," featuring Maybach label chief Rick Ross, along with Meek Mill and T-Pain. Right behind the "Self Made 2" set at No. 5 is R. Kelly, who debuts his latest album, "Write Me Back," with 68,000. It's his 14th top 10 album and follows 2011's "Love Letter," which launched at No. 6 with 154,000. "Write Me Back" is R. Kelly's first studio album to bow with less than 100,000 since his first solo set, 1993's "12 Play," debuted with 44,000. As for the rest of the top 10 albums: Kenny Chesney's "Welcome to the Fishbowl" slips 2-6 (61,000; down 68%), Adele's "21" holds at No. 7 (42,000; down 12%) and One Direction's "Up All Night" is steady at No. 8 (39,000; down 6%). Usher's "Looking 4 Myself" slides 6-9 with 36,000 (down 26%) and the "Rock of Ages" soundtrack dips 5-10 with 28,000 (down 42%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is a non-mover at No. 1, selling 251,000 downloads (down 5%). In fact, the entire top five titles are stationary this week. Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" (207,000; down 6%), Maroon 5's "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa (186,000; down 15%), Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" featuring Kimbra (156,000; down 11%) and Ellie Goulding's "Lights" (152,000; up 2%) round out the rest of the Nos. 2-4 slots, respectively. At No. 6 is the Digital Songs chart's highest new entry, "Good Time" by Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen. It debuts with 140,000 downloads. David Guetta's "Titanium," featuring Sia, slips 6-7 with 125,000 (down 1%) and Flo Rida's "Whistle" flies 32-8 with 113,000 (up 115%). The song has been featured in recently TV commercials on The CW touting the network's summer lineup. Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" moves 7-9 (110,000; down 9%) and Usher's "Scream" rounds out the top 10, falling 8-10 with 102,000 (down 14%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 1) totaled 5.74 million units, down 3% compared with the sum last week (5.94 million) and down 9% compared with the comparable sales week of 2011 (6.34 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 150.46 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (155.46 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.17 million downloads, down 1% compared with last week (25.38 million) and down less than 1% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (25.29 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 672.73 million, up 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (635.35 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Beyonce's "4" held at No. 1 for a second week, selling 115,000 (down 63%). The highest debut came from Lloyd's "King of Hearts" at No. 10 with 26,000.

2k shy of 100 for MMG. Not bad.
If not mistaken, LP had a 1k difference w/Trey Songz back in '10.

MMG's numbers are astounding!
Kels underperformed a bit but he usually has some longevity (at least Love Letter had)
Brilliant sales in top 5 btw.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-july-2-2012-albums-keeping-adam-152652331.htmlWeek Ending July 1, 2012. Albums: Keeping Adam HumbleBy Paul Grein | Chart Watch – Wed. July 4, 2012 Everything's going Adam Levine's way, right? He has a hit TV show, and has sung lead on three giant hits in the past year, Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" and "Payphone" and Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts." (Combined sales: 11,812,000). Well, the Billboard charts are working to keep Levine humble. "Payphone" has so far been unable to rise above #2. And now Maroon 5's latest album Overexposed debuts at #2 behind the latest by fellow L.A. band Linkin Park. But it was close. Extremely close. If Maroon 5's album had sold just 2K more copies, it would have taken the #1 spot. This is the group's second album in a row to just miss debuting at #1. Hands All Over debuted at #2 in September 2010. If it had sold 12K more copies, it would have seized the crown from Zac Brown Band's You Get What You Give. Levine has been on such a roll lately that he can't get too upset at just missing out on two #1 albums. Even so, most artists don't like to come in second—especially when it's this close. But it's not like Maroon 5 has never had a #1 album. Its 2007 album It Won't Be Soon Before Long debuted in the top spot with sales of 429K. Overexposed starts with sales of 222K, which marks a healthy jump over Hands All Over, which opened with sales of 142K. Incidentally, Hands All Over has become a solid hit despite that so-so debut. It has sold 1,132,000 copies. It rebounds from #115 to #37 in its 89th week on the chart. Overexposed is #1 on Top Digital Albums. It sold 134K digital copies, compared to 122K digital copies for Linkin Park's Living Things. (They don't give a Grammy for Best Album Title, but if they did, Overexposed would be a leading candidate. It's a great example of self-deprecating wit. Another in this vein: Sugar Ray's 1999 album 14:59.) Linkin Park and Maroon 5 are on very similar release schedules. Their last two albums were released one week apart. This time around, the two bands went head-to-head. Living Things is Linkin Park's fifth #1 album. Only three other hard rock bands have landed five or more #1 albums. Led Zeppelin leads the pack with seven. Metallica and Van Halen have also had five. Linkin Park's previous #1 albums were Meteora, Collision Course (with Jay-Z), Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns. Living Things sold more copies in one week than any other rock album so far this year. Runners-up are Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball (196K), Van Halen's A Different Kind Of Truth (187K) and Jack White's Blunderbuss (138K). (The Fine Print: The Hunger Games soundtrack, which sold 175K in its first week, features a wide range of pop and rock acts.) Living Things also enters the Official U.K. chart at #1. It's the band's third album to reach #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. Only one hard rock band has had more "transatlantic #1" albums. That's Led Zeppelin with six. Metallica has also had three. R. Kelly's Write Me Back debuts at #5. It's the R&B star's 14th top 10 album (counting two collabos with Jay-Z). This puts R. Kelly in a tie with Prince for the most by a non-rap R&B male artist. (If you combine Michael Jackson's solo tally with the Jackson 5/Jacksons, he leads with 15.) Adele's 21 holds at #7 for the second week in its 71st week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. The album this week ties the top 10 longevity of the Dr. Zhivago soundtrack, which logged 71 weeks in the top 10 from June 1966 to January 1968. (The album is best known for "Lara's Theme," which became a top 10 hit for Ray Conniff as "Somewhere My Love.") Only five albums have logged more than 71 weeks in the top 10 since 1963, when Billboard combined its separate mono and stereo charts into one comprehensive listing. They are: The Sound Of Music soundtrack (109 weeks), Bruce Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A. (84 weeks), Michael Jackson's Thriller (78 weeks), Def Leppard's Hysteria (78 weeks) and Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill (72 weeks). Which means if 21 spends one more week in the top 10, it will tie Pill for the longest run in the top 10 by a female solo artist. Will Adele do it? Stay tuned. Shameless Plug: 21 sold 3,668,000 copies in the first half of 2012, which is more than any other album has sold in the first half of the year since 50 Cent's The Massacre blew through 4,022,000 copies in the first half of 2005. 21 sold more copies in the first half of this year than it did in the first half of 2011 (2,517,000), when it was a new release. It's the first album to finish as the top-seller of the first half of the year twice since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. Otherwise, the album sales news was grim. 21 was the only album that sold 1 million copies in the first half. Eleven albums sold 500K copies. This is down from past years. I'll have all the news in a Chart Watch Extra on album sales in the first half of the year that will be posted shortly. One Direction's Up All Night logs its 16th straight week in the top 10. In addition, the boy band's DVD, Up All Night: The Live Tour, is #1 for the fifth week on Top Music Videos. It sold 18,000 copies this week, bringing its five-week total to 178K. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" holds at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the seventh straight week. Only one other song has had seven weeks at #1 so far this year. That's "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae. Will "Call Me Maybe" also hold at #1 on the Hot 100? Probably, but you'll find out for sure later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Shameless Plug II: I'll also have a Chart Watch Extra on digital song sales in the first half of the year. It'll go up tomorrow morning. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums. The Top Five: Linkin Park's Living Things debuts at #1 (223K). It's the band's seventh top 10 album; its fifth #1…Maroon 5's Overexposed debuts at #2 (222K). It's the group's fourth top 10 album…Justin Bieber's Believe drops from #1 to #3 in its second week (115K)… Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made, Vol. 2 debuts at #4 (98K)… R. Kelly's Write Me Back debuts at #5 (68K). It's Kelly's 14th top 10 album. The Second Five: Kenny Chesney's Welcome To The Fishbowl drops from #2 to #6 in its second week (61K). It's #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week…Adele's 21 holds at #7 for the second week in its 71st week (42K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… One Direction's Up All Night holds at #8 for the second week in its 16th week (39K). The former #1 album has been in the top 10 the entire time…Usher's Looking 4 Myself drops from #6 to #9 in its third week (36K). It's the third week in the top 10 for the former #1 album…The Rock Of Ages soundtrack drops from #5 to #10 in its fourth week (28K). It's #1 on Top Soundtracks for the fourth week. Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel Is Wiser drops from #3 to #11...Smashing Pumpkins' Oceania drops from #4 to #19… Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines drops from #9 to #13…Rush's Clockwork Angels drops from #10 to #26. The Offspring's Days Go By debuts at #12. It's the band's seventh top 20 album (though it failed to follow the other six into the top 10)…The Pentatonix's PTX, Vol. 1 EP debuts at #14. The artist was the winner on NBC's The Sing Off…Memphis May Fire's Challenger bows at #16. Sleeping With Siren's If You Were A Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack bows at #17. This isn't the first non-soundtrack to have the word "soundtrack" in its title. 10cc had a top 15 album in 1975 titled The Original Soundtrack. Led Zeppelin's 2007 album Mothership vaults from #157 to #20 in its 130th week on the chart. It jumps to #1 on this week's Top Catalog Albums chart. Now get this: This marks the first time that Led Zeppelin has topped the catalog chart since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. That's surprising because the band is one of the best-selling acts in music history. Led Zep has sold 24,561,000 albums since 1991, mostly due to catalog sales. Mothership, a two-disk album, reached #7 in December 2007. Chris Cagle's Back In The Saddle debuts at #27. The title plays off Gene Autry's 1939 classic "Back In The Saddle Again," which the singing cowboy sang in the movie Rovin' Tumbleweeds. Autry's recording is in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Aerosmith had an original top 40 hit titled "Back In The Saddle" in 1977. Usher's 2004 album Confessions tops the 10 million mark in U.S. sales this week. It's only the 19th album to reach that milestone since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. Confessions is the best-selling R&B album in this period (excluding hip hop). Here's the rest of the top five among R&B albums: Boyz II Men's II (8,586,000), TLC's CrazySexyCool (7,342,000), Janet Jackson's janet. (7,035,000) and Boyz II Men's Cooleyhighharmony (6,971,000). (The Fine Print: I'm classifying Nelly's Country Grammar, 50 Cent's Get Rich Or Die Tryin', Dr. Dre's 2001 and Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill as hip-hop. I'm classifying Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack and Mariah Carey's Daydream and Music Box as pop.) Confessions was a Grammy finalist for Album of the Year for 2004. It lost to Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company. I think even some people at the Recording Academy would privately concede that Confessions should have won. No disrespect intended to the great Ray Charles, who should have won for his 1962 ground-breaker, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music. (It lost to Vaughn Meader's The First Family, an album few have played since 1963.) Ted was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. Coming Attractions: Chris Brown's Fortune is expected to be next week's top new entry. Also due: Flo Rida's Wild Ones and the straight-to-DVD release, Mac & Devin Go To High School. (That's the stoner movie that gave us "Young, Wild & Free" by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa featuring Bruno Mars.)

^Absolutely. Remember when she won the Grammy for Album of the Year? She said it was crazy, "this is hip-hop music." But, it's also R&B.

Quick somebody find the end-of-year numbers to add to Adele's total to see how close she is to 10 million.

Damn would have wished M5 got the top spot, didn't think it would be that close. "Hands All Over" surged back into the Top 50 I believe as well, I wonder if people thought that was the new album or just picked it up along with it.

No, I didn't, but it's not that important. Wonderful album at the end of the day. "21" stands a little under 9.5 (9,497).

Mandisa's sales are really good. Christian radio has been eating up Mandisa's singles. She's on the chart with a song feat. TobyMac right now. Her album also received a Grammy nom, which makes her 3 for 3 with nominations for her albums (not counting her Christmas CD).

I've always been impressed with Mandisa's sales... Definitely not a mega star, but her steady sales success has definitely gone severely unnoticed. She's sold over 500,000 albums, which to me is very impressive.
