I thought their last studio album was going to be their final one.

Their last studio album was their last on the Atlantic (?) label. They've started their own record label, I believe.

This is a far cry from the catchiness of the singles they released during their glory days.

I really like this single. I really think it has some of that "universal language" previous singles like "Hold My Hand" and "Time" had. It sounds to me like a more grown-up "Hold My Hand".
I wonder if Hootie & The Blowfish really think they can make some sort of comeback off this album, even if not 1/10 of the success of "Cracked Rear View".
The way the cover art of the album is detailed is somewhat familiar to that of "Cracked Rear View". Both covers feature the four bandmates standing small in the distance, and they also seem to stand and be arranged the same way as well.
Somehow I think they think they can mirror some degree of spirit that "Cracked Rear View" had that can fuel a small comeback.
I really would like to see this single do well. They have major odds running agsinst them as it is to ever blossom again, with a small label, low profile and a BK commerical that didn't help at all, but anything is possible I believe, even for the likes of them and Sinead O'Connor and Smash Mouth.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

This is a far cry from the catchiness of the singles they released during their glory days. It's not bad, but not as commercial sounding as their singles from the first few albums. I hope there is better stuff on the album.

Most added at Hot AC with 17 adds. Most added at AC with 18 adds.

Most added at Hot AC with 17 adds. Most added at AC with 18 adds. I'm surprised by those add numbers. They're stronger than first-week adds recorded for "Innocence". If this is any linear indication to "Innocence", this just might make the Top 20, even though I don't expect a full-fledged comeback. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I've never been a big fan, but there's no question this is their best single in a long time... Top 20 seems pretty likely to me.
Someone else already mentioned this, perhaps on another board, but its nice to see the re-emergence of 90s alternative artists on this format... I'd never have guessed a year or two ago we'd be hearing Collective Soul, Live, Green Day, Counting Crows, Better than Ezra, etc. doing decently again on Hot AC. Although Top 10 territory still seems to be off-limit for most of them. Hope the trend keeps up & Hootie has some luck with this song.

It's true that there has been quite a favorable view of this single here.
If that's any indication too, this single may actually charter some territory no single since "I Will Wait" could.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It's true that there has been quite a favorable view of this single here. LOL, no it isn't. Orange Clouds says it isn't catchy. Nick hopes there's better stuff on their album, and you and smadavid like it (and I guess prenatt1166 likes it if he's promoting the song on here). Seems pretty mixed to me.

No one seems to hate the single here though is the point. For a while when some had saw the name of the band alone, there was that immediate sense of nausea. Orange Clouds said it isn't real catchy, but it doesn't necessarily mean he dislikes it, he's just saying it isn't as radio-friendly as many of their previous releases. I happen to think there's a mature kind of catchiness to this track. It's true this isn't as immediate as "Hold My Hand" or "Only Wanna Be With You", then again, neither were recent singles like "Collide" and "Somewhere Only We Know" until they began growing on me, and they both got a promising amount of exposure. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It's not a bad song, but it doesn't live up to their past stuff. Probably will be a mid-charter on both formats. I don't see it doing anything on CHR.

I think some of you are going to be surprised how well this song ends up doing. Vanguard records although independent is putting at least double if not more promotion into this album and single than Atlantic Records put in combined for the last 3 records (SSC, HBF, Best of Hootie).
The sense i've gotten from different Program Directors and Music directors is this is their best single since "I Will Wait" and has the potential to reach the top 10. It will be very difficult but with 90's bands "Collective Soul" and "Better Than Ezra" knocking on the top 10 door it's certainly not impossible.
It was released a week ago today and has been surging up playlists. I think it will get into the top 20 at least, but where it goes from there will depend on one simple question. Will the audience reconnect with Hootie?
On a side note: A video for "One Love" will be impacting VH1 and CMT shortly. I believe the video will make or break the song.

I think it has a great shot at Top 10. One thing that always remains is a good song will always find it's way against the odds, and this is their best since "I Will wait" and before that the best since their first cd!!!

Well, sorry to be the voice of dissent, but this is one 90s band that I hope stays out of the spotlight. :) Before hearing this single, I would have agreed with you 100% there... most of their popular hits, aside from being way overplayed, were not very good to begin with. I liked Let Her Cry pretty well but that's about it. This is now probably my favorite single of theirs. The melody especially on the verses is quite pretty and doesn't seem to grow old like most of their songs do. The guitar intro is very fresh-sounding, and the piano really complements it nicely. I love songs where piano and guitar come together so well. Also the harmonies are great. With the song being added at a pretty good rate... +180 or so plays on mediabase right now, it will certainly be given a chance... and I wouldn't be surprised at a top-10 finish.

Well, Radio seems to be loving it. Click on the link to see the 62 stations who have added "one love" in its first two weeks. www.hootie.com/read.asp?ID=105'One Love' is #1 Most Added at AC 2nd Week in a Row! Another great week for Hootie & the Blowfish's first single, "ONE LOVE" from their 5th studio release, Looking For Lucky, due in stores August 9th. ONE LOVE was # 1 MOST ADDED AT AC MAINSTREAM (2 WEEKS IN A ROW!) WITH 15 ADDS and # 3 MOST ADDED AT HOTAC WITH 10 ADDS

"One Love" is in excellent shape for a post-Fairweather Johnson Hootie single.
I really think this will at least make the Top 20 at both AC and Hot AC, primarily because even listeners who have regularly resented Hootie's flooding the airwaves before and grew to have a biased annoyance to them are having a much more positive view of this track.
That's the attitude that is destined to give this single exposure no single since "I Will Wait" could.
I'm not quite sure of this going Hot AC Top 10, but I do think this can be huge at AC, and if my prediction is correct there, it can generate a domino effect into Hot AC and possibly even a minimal cult effect at CHR/Pop (though don't expect any more CHR/Pop Top 10 hits from this band).
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

A #33 debut at Hot AC is a very strong sign for this single.
This will effortlessly soar into the Top 30, and I guess we'll just see where this goes from there.

HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH One Love Producer(s): Don Gehman Writer(s): various Publisher(s): Monica's Reluctance to Lob, ASCAP; Motochez, BMI Genre: POP Label/Catalog Number: Vanguard (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: August 07, 2005
Perhaps the superlative frat-party soundtrack band of the mid-1990s deserves a second, third . . . where are we, is it a fourth chance? Or not. Lead singer Darius Rucker still displays passion in his vocals on "One Love," but without a forceful hype machine behind the group (now signed to indie Vanguard), Hootie and company sound like a machine spitting out droll, dated, paint-by-numbers wallpaper music. Thanks for the memories, guys, but your place in history is sealed. Time to move on. —Chuck Taylor

Nice to see the Hootie bashing critics back out in full force. That's when you know they're doing something right.

Nice to see the Hootie bashing critics back out in full force. That's when you know they're doing something right. Those Hootie-bashing critics have a clear bias, in my opinion, in that no matter what Hootie releases, even if it were a departure from their traditional sound, they'd drop the ax on them. Hootie & The Blowfish have never been a groundbreaking band, but I believe you have to give them credit in that this band really works together as a community; they love to make music. Those critics have a right to critique them for being square or ordinary, but they've already discredited themselves when they just go bashing them album after album without even being willing to talk about the individual tracks, and, beyond that, I happen to believe a lot of these critics are just jealous that they've never had a fraction of their fame and hate them for it. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Well, I plan on buying their album. I think this single is good, definitely not their best work though.
I am hoping the album has much stronger tracks.

Fans are overwhelmingly agreeing on the official Hootie message board that this is either their best album since "Cracked Rear View" or "Fairweather Johnson". They also unanimously believe "Autumn Jones", "State Your Peace" and "The Killing Stone" are among their best work ever. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

This is bland and sounds too much like everything else they've ever put out. I've literally heard this song about 100 times in the last two weeks and I can't even remember how the chorus goes now.

"One Love" will be #29 on the Hot AC chart this week And "One Love" has also leaped into the AC Top 20 this week, something Hootie & The Blowfish have not been able to do in years. Two weeks on the chart and at #29 is very strong for a Hootie single. Sincerely, Noah Eaton
