Actually, a lot of Alternative stations DO play "classic songs" by R. E. M. and the Police, especially (sorry to keep repeating this) if there is no major Hot AC in the market Several alternative stations (KROQ in LA and Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia come to mind) also spin Bob Marley, which always confuses me. Those are two good examples, I think b/c Phildelphia doesn't have a Hot AC, and L. A. has a poorly rated (or two poorly rated, can't remember) Hot AC's

Well, Bob Marley never gained a real mass pop appeal, so he would still be an alternative to the mainstream - even though his music is not alternative-rock sounding.
