I really like the video. It's simple and it's really just the guys playing on a street corner but I think that let's the song speak for itself. The quick part with Rob singing "live" is different (and good).

Caught the video on VH1 Top 20 Countdown this morning. I think it's just okay actually. The song is good, but the video reminded me sooooo much of the Little Wonders video. Just no excitement to make me want to vote it to the top.
Hey, do you guys think there will be a third single from this album? I saw them in concert the other night and "I'll Believe You When" was so much fun. It's so catchy and really different from anything on the radio right now. I think it could do well. I guess the sucess of THT would affect whether they release another single. And their label. But I'd love to see it.

This isn't my favorite of the new songs on the CD, but I'm glad that it's doing well so far. I'd like to see "I'll Believe You When" get released next, I think it could be a pretty big hit.

From Billboard:
These Hard Times MATCHBOX TWENTY Producer(s): Steve Lillywhite Label: Melisma/Atlantic
It would be easy enough to take Matchbox Twenty for granted at this point. For more than a decade now, it's delivered 17 hits to top 40 and adult top 40. Then, of course, there's Rob Thomas' equally robust solo output. But "These Hard Times," the second single from band retrospective "Exile on Mainstream," is wholly salient, with its gently chugging midtempo flush of guitars, Mr. Rob's melancholy vocal and a poignant lyrical portrait of reluctantly moving forward: "Say goodbye, these days are gone, and we can't keep holding on/When all we need is some relief, through these hard times." Master producer Steve Lillywhite helps pull in the instrumental reins for one of Matchbox's most understated, affecting performances to date. Considering the road the band has traveled, that's no small feat.—Chuck Taylor

It looks like this song is going to end up being a pretty good hit, it is really taking off on CHR and may even debut in the Top 40 this week. I think it sounds like a very "springtime" like song which could always help.

Saw the guys at Madison Square Garden last night (also Rob's b-day) and what a fantastic show! It was definitely my favorite concert of theirs. A good time was had by everyone and it was just a lot of fun. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Rob and after that, the band of matchsticks surprised him by playing Streetcorner Symphony! That was definitely one of the highlights for me. I was bummed that they took Soul off the setlist (seems like it's for good) and they didn't end up playing it last night.
Thanks to the guys for an amazing night!

I was surprised to see that the video for this jumped from #20 to #4 this week on the VH1 Countdown. I think it's a particularly boring video and am really disappointed in it. My Hot AC station doesn't seem to have added this song yet. I'll have to give them a call to request it. While it's probably my least favorite song on the new EP, I still like it and want it to do well for them.

Yeah really sick of Matchbox 20 videos shot on the streets of NYC (seems like every single one lol)...esp. since their music IMO doesn't really seem like "city music" - never really understood that BTW that VH1 Top 20 Countdown has songs goin from #19 to #3 then back to #15 then back up to #4 etc...it's pretty random I guess

MB20 are still stuck in that little box they can't seem to get out of, and for some reason, they don't like to experiment. The only music video they have made that I LOVE, is for Unwell, because it's *different*.

^IMO Rob Thomas/M20 have been able to think outside the box musically (i. e. string arrangements on Mad Season CD, banjo on Unwell, pop sound on Lonely No More, teen-punk sound kinda on How Far We've Come, etc.)...but it's his videos that seem to all look identical (basically cause they're all shot on the streets of NYC)
Coldplay actually seems to release songs that sound really similar to me, but their videos are by far much better IMO

How is this song doing? My Hot AC station hasn't even added it yet. Seems like it's not doing as well as they had hoped. Poor choice for a 2nd single? I guess I'm surprised I'm not hearing this on my radio.

This is a good song, but I think it's a little too samey for them and that's why it's not doing better. In my opinion, the huge success of HFWC was because it was A. Good, B. Very different for Matchbox Twenty. Nonetheless it is still knocking on the door of the top 20 at pop, and is solidly inside the top20 at HotAC. I expect this to continue to climb into the Top10 at Hot AC, probably will only peak at #8 or #7 though from what I see so far.

It's about to crack the Top 40 CHR, and it's def. doin well on Hot AC - It sounds really country I think, and I'm pretty sure that HACs in markets where country doesn't do so well wouldn't be on this one as quickly...I hear it all the time but that's cause I have a Cumulus CHR in town which plays it all the time lol If ur in the Pacific Northwest, that would def. explain it (country-souding songs take a huge hit up there). while Alternative-soundin songs like How Far We've Come do really well

I'm in Cleveland. My station seems to be playing Little Wonders more now all of a sudden. Not playing HFWC as much, but no These Hard Times for some reason. I do think it takes a bit to warm up to it. But I do like it. Just want it to do well for them. And am secretly hoping that a 3rd single will be released. I'm pulling for "I'll Believe You When". It's so catchy and really different from anything out there. But I do agree that These Hard Times can be kind of inter-changeable with Little Wonders and Ever the Same. It's kind of like some of the recent Goo Goo Dolls songs that all sound the same to me.

Wow really surprised that neither HAC station in Cleveland is playin it (it's pretty much an aboration lol)...Q104 is pretty current with their adds, yet they're playin "My Almost Lover" by Fine Frenzy (sorry whatever that song is called) but apparently haven't added These Hard Times...weird...maybe they're tryin to go in a slightly more Alternative direction But yeah nationwide, THT is doin really well (for a second M20 single this late into their career IMO)...it's #19 on the CHR/HAC combo chart

Yeah, Q104 is playing the hell out of Almost Lover. Great song. They had the singer in studio for an interview and said that their station had "broke" her. Not sure if that's the case. But she was a real sweetheart! Gonna check out her music. Regarding THT, its bullet seems to be losing steam. Only +75 tonight. And I guess since I never hear it on the radio I've gotten concerned about it.

Sorry not sure how to post links lol I've been postin the CHR/HAC Combo chart on the CHR thread...been tryin to post it on this thread too but I get lazy sometimes lol - I'll copy it over in a couple minutes (it's not an official chart, though, just an estimate based on station playlists of Mass Appeal CHRs and Modern Hot ACs)

Only a +28 bullet this morning on Mediabase. Looks like it's seriously losing steam. My station still hasn't added it unfortunately, but it is in their online music survey at least. I think this song is so appropos of the times right now so I guess I'm surprised it isn't doing better just because the lyrics are so spot on.

I think it will bounce back. Maroon5 seemed to have lost their bullet about two weeks ago but their now in the top 10 with +100. I think Matchbox, the most successful artist of all time on this chart, will be able to do the same in a week or so. Having said that, I don't think this will go too deep into the top 10 and peak at like #8. This song seems to have lost it on pop though but a top 40 peak is a good showing for them over there.
Regardless of where this peaks, Matchbox has proven that they can still make their music popular with the masses.

Up to +86 now. And, lo and behold, my station actually played it in the afternoon for the first time today. Yay! Finally. They had played it in evening song challenges and it always lost. The last time was last week and it lost to a local artist who has a lot of family in the area. So the vote was basically an unfair fight. But it must have done well enough that they put it in the rotation. :)

It's a good station. Been playing a ton of Rob's solo stuff lately - Little Wonders a lot, Lonely No More, Ever the Same. Seems like they made the decision to stay with Rob's tried and true songs rather than add These Hard Times. I requested it again today and they played it. So hopefully it will get some more exposure. Some songs just need to be heard a few times before people embrace them. And just have to comment on a review I read of their current tour. They got a good review from the LA Times for their recent show at the Staples Center, but some other newspaper out there called them the Huey Lewis and the News of our time. That's just soooooo off in my book.

Yeah lol More like the Genesis/Phil Collins of our time IMO (that's who Rob Thomas compares himself to anyway)...Huey Lewis and the News had so few lasting hits, and completely "crashed" at the end of the 80s...

Just got back from seven days in Florida and expected this song to be losing spins and on its way down the chart. But I was pleasantly surprised to see it with a +119 bullet tonight at #11 on the Hot AC chart. It's got some legs after all.

Up to #8 today with +102 bullet. I don't think this will hit the Top 5 though. But I guess I should learn never to count out an MB20 song. Just hope there is enough staying power to allow a 3rd single from the album.
