I was reading on numerous sites that this was projected to be the second single off "Cradlesong" but I don't think that has been confirmed yet. Nonetheless, another great tune from the album. And, supposedly, a video has already been made. Certainly different from what we're used to seeing with Rob, but fits very well with the song. It cracked me up for the most part, but became a bit over the top from the bridge through to the end. Watch for an appeareance by Rob himself. vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=60097965

I love this song. Just rocks! Hope it is a single. But Rob has said that Someday is the next single. And some peeps have said their "cradlesong" CD's say something like "featuring the hit singles Her Diamonds and Someday". So it sounds like the deal is done. But not sure why they would release this viral video of Meltdown now. Unless it is just to promote the whole album.

I read that this single was featured during the NBA Playoffs on ABC, much in the same manner like how "This Is How A Heart Breaks" was used from Rob's first solo album "Something to Be".
I also dropped by Rob's official website and today's news release more or less confirms that this viral video is the actual video for this song.

I think this song should definitely get released next, the video was surprisingly really good. I wouldn't be shocked if they wait on Someday a bit, I 've grown to really like this song a lot.

"Someday" sounds strictly like third-single material. They need to release something more upbeat and with attitude for the second single.
"Give Me The Meltdown" clearly fits the description, as does "Real World '09" and "Still Ain't Over You".

I'm not sure that I really get that Meltdown video. I know it's just off the wall stuff but seems kind of forced. Then again. I'm probably too picky. It is quite different for Rob. That's always a good thing.

The video is much better after watching it a few times. The last two scenes are pretty good.

Her Diamonds is kind of a ballad and Someday has the same kind of tempo. He needs to rock it out! I think Give Me the Meltdown with the NBA Playoff exposure and now this viral video should be the next single. Though I LOVE Still Ain't Over You, I don't think that is in contention. It's kind of funny to read the official reviews of this album. They're all over the place regarding the description of songs. Some love Fire on the Mountain and others scoff at it and call it pretentious and U2ish. One called Gasoline a song with a country vibe ??? and others say it is definite single material. Some love Real World 09 and that's my least favorite song on the album. I really would like to hear the process that major magazines use to review new music. Sometimes it seems like they listen once and slap it together based on pre-existing opinions of the artist. Oh, and looks like I won't be able to see Rob this time around, unless they add some dates near Ohio. No Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, or Pittsburgh dates. Bummer. Am already trying to figure out the opening song and closer for the tour.

I agree with everyone. Radio really needs to start playing Meltdown. It's the perfect 2nd single and seems to be getting a good response. Someday, although good, is too close to Her Diamonds in feel... maybe for 3 or 4th single, but not now. Let Meltdown get a lot of play and then send in Someday in the fall. Personally, and this surprised me, I'm thinking Snowblind could be a huge, huge hit. I'm also one of people that really likes Real World 09. I can see that being a huge hit and can easily imagine the video for it. Either that or it needs to go in the next Shrek movie...
My guess - show opener = Meltdown / show closer = Fire on the Mountain.

Am already trying to figure out the opening song and closer for the tour. I suppose "Fire On The Mountain" just feels "phony" to some reviewers because Thomas has never been known for writing socially-conscious songs. But Thomas has said it was inspired by the book "What Is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng", so I don't doubt his sincerity that he felt strongly about what he got from the book thematically to even attempt writing something like that. "Gasoline" doesn't sound even remotely country. It sounds more like a cross between a 80's synth mid-tempo and a Gin Blossoms song to me. Even "Getting Late" doesn't sound all that country to me. It sounds more like what Tom Petty would write. One song that has gotten a positive mention in every review I've read, however, is "Mockingbird". Some have commended Thomas' efforts to sing in a higher register, while others commended primarily the texture of the track's sound. I, too, think it's one of the album's stronger tracks. I'd probably rank "Natural" as the album's best song and "Her Diamonds" as the album's worst (though it's still a respectable song). Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I'll repeat it again. I LOVE Mockingbird. Well, I love all the songs and really could make a case for most of the songs to be singles. LOL!

Metacritic - first time I've checked it out. Hard to believe LA Times gave it a pretty decent review. Like Rolling Stone, they have not given much love to MB20/Rob over the years. That's interesting that they posted a blog entry for EW. She gave it a C+. Printed version in the magazine was a B. I don't have my copy with me but I remember thinking it was a fairly good review. www.metacritic.com/music/artists/thomasrob/cradlesong?q=rob%20thomas

Michael Jackson Robs Rob Thomas of a Number One Debut by Paul Cashmere - July 12 2009 photo by Ros O'Gorman Had Michael Jackson not died a fortnight ago, Rob Thomas would have the number one album in Australia this week. Team Thomas did a magnificent job of working up to the release of his sophomore solo album but who in the marketing department could have foreseen the events of this week three months ago. ‘Cradlesong’ sold 13,042 units in Australia last week. It would have been number one if not for Jackson’s death. Jackson held on to the top three spots with ‘The Essential Michael Jackson’ at number one clocking up an extra 24,035 sales last week, outselling ‘Cradlesong’ by almost two to one. Considering the price Michael paid for his number one album this week, I’m sure Rob is content with his position 4 debut. In fact his next promotional move will be something Michael will never get to do again. Rob is heading down to Australia in two weeks to talk to us about the new album. Other debuts this week on the Australia chart were Mark Vincent ‘My Dream – Mio Visione’ at 5, Hillsong ‘Faith + Hope + Love’ at 11, La Roux ‘La Roux’ at 22, Wilco ‘Wilco’ at 47, The Galvatrons ‘Laser Graffiti’ at 61 and Brad Paisley ‘American Saturday Night’ at 67. undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=8754_Michael_Jackson_Robs_Rob_Thomas_of_a_Number_One_Debutwww.ariacharts.com.au/pages/charts_display_album.asp?chart=1G50

Cradlesong came in at #11 in Canada. I don't think that's a big market for Rob/MB20 anymore outside Toronto and maybe Vancouver. jam.canoe.ca/Music/Charts/ALBUMS.htmlHopefully, the album will have longevity. They need to seriously rethink Someday as the second single though.

I remember ratethemusic.com doing a survey on Rob's music a while back, trying to figure out which songs people liked for singles. I can't recall what songs were in the mix though. Did anyone else take that survey and remember the songs?

Rob posted this today on his website. I voted for Meltdown!
hey guys. just wanted to say thanx for all the kindness you're sending tyler's way. he/we appreciate it. i go back to work next week. i'm off to canada to spread the cradlesong word. wanted to say that the video for meltdown was just a web viral we did and not REALLY the video, because it's not the next single. that said, i really want to hear from you guys what you think the next single should be. we were going to put out SOMEDAY, but i want your feed back, so it's either: SOMEDAY, REAL WORLD 09, GIVE ME THE MELTDOWN or MOCKINGBIRD. atlantic peeps and myself will be listening, so give me your feedback. also, for those who were wondering, my bass player, AL CARTY, WILL be coming back to join me, but i can't thank KONRAD ADDERLEY enough for filling in. he fit in great and is a stellar player! so, that's it. i'm off to australia for press next week, and doing REAL TIME on friday, on my way through, so watch me stick my foot in my mouth once again! cya. Glad to see Thomas is reconsidering Someday as a 2nd single. He definitely needs a change up in tempo and lyrical connection.
I know it doesn't seem like the most popular song on the CD, but Snowblind just stays in my head for days after I hear it. I also think it's has the most heartbreaking lyrics and I don't usually get into that kind of thing.

I really hope this is the next single. Just it. Love the "wide awake now, and your monkey's dead" line. Waiting for some animal rights group to protest it though. LOL.
I, too, love Snowblind. Love the lyrics and how Rob's vocals are soooo different than anything he's done before. I do remember him saying somewhere that he was working on his higher register. Just hope he can pull it off live night after night. I recall him really struggling with Hand Me Down in concert. The toll on his voice was really evident after a long tour. And Snowblind just raises the ante on that higher vocal range.

I actually would be thrilled if Thomas decides to release this next, even while I strongly believe it will do little commercially.
When I mentioned earlier in the thread that the second single needs to have a bit more edge and/or muscle to it, while "Give Me The Meltdown" clearly fits the description, I've also never thought of it as a single that will prove commercially successful. Too many listeners won't get the lyrics, especially that monkey line, and it will have too fleeting a feeling musically to really sink in and appreciate on a more emotional plane.
In honesty, I think "Real World '09" would probably make a slightly more effective commercial single than "Give Me The Meltdown" since, after all, it encapsulates the features of a conventional Monday-Friday, 9-to-5 work week malaise.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Noah, you have me scratching my head, again. I think most people get the concept of having "a monkey on your back". I think they'd get that as easily as they got "seven inches from the mid-day sun"! Other more muscular songs (pardon the pun) would include "Wonderful" and "Still Ain't Over You" and "Fire on the Mountain". But I like Real World 09, too, and hope he releases that eventually as well.

I don't know why, but I think Real World '09 might be one of his worst songs ever, I really like every other song on every album of his but that.

I'm not a big fan of the poppier type songs but Real World 09 is just a little bit of bouncy perfection to me. If someone like Fountains of Wayne released it every critic would be wetting their pants. But since it's Rob Thomas, who knows. But I think it's too short to be a single. It needs another verse or two.

From Rob today on twitter. I have to say that I think this may kill any momentum the album might have gained with a second single. Hope I'm wrong.
Rob from twitter today - looks like Someday is the next single.
shooting a video for SOMEDAY soon. getting treatments now.

Rob from twitter today - looks like Someday is the next single. shooting a video for SOMEDAY soon. getting treatments now. Bummer. It's the only song on the album that I skip more than I play. Just kind of boring to me. But maybe they're going for that soccer mom demographic and hoping two slow songs back to back will HELP sell records to them. I definitely would have preferred Give Me the Meltdown. Mockingbird and Snowblind are better than Someday, IMO.
