I thought maybe we all post all the charts Casey Kasem spotlight during his retro shows that air every week on some oldies or AC station across America.
If you are wondering the show's titles are called
American Top 40: The 70's which spotlights only the show on At40 that were 3 hours long which aired between July 1970 to Sept 1978 when the show extended to four hours probably due to the songs on the chart were getting longer.
and....
American Top 40: The 80's which is just like AT40 Flashback but with the show aired in its entirety instead of airing just the final 3 hours of the series. Also the shows that are spotlighted are the episodes that aired between Jan. 1980 to August 1988 when Casey left the show for the first and was replaced by Shadow Stevens.
Too bad we won't be hearing the chart between Sept 1978-Dec 1979 and Aug 1988-Dec 1989 because of the reasons mentioned above.

So the shows from the late 1970s won't be played just because they were an hour longer? Why can't they just hack off the first hour like they did on AT40 Flashback?

I have no idea my guess is that a lot of people would complain.
Also another reason why I'm posting this thread is that an oldies station in Boston airs AT40 the 70's and airs it at Saturday 11pm but only plays the final two hours of the show.

What is the difference between these AT40 shows and the ones on XM radio? Are there any exclusive shows that are only available on regular radio? That would probably be the only reason why I would start listening.

Probaly that Ed Mcmanhon is introducing the flashback episodes and is playing extras for radio station to play if there is time on their schedule to do it also there are new commericals for the show but no old commericals for the original broadcast except for a promo for a K-Tel type album they were promoting back around 1971.

Ed McMann does liners for the show, 2. there ARE commercials, & 3. the shows you'll hear are NOT shows that XM has.

Sadly, Jimmy Buffet only made it out of the 30's on the Hot 100 twice in his career. Once with Margrarittaville in 1977 and the other was with Alan Jackson on "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere" in 2003.

I just checked the Sunny 101.5 website and it says that the 80s version of this show airs on Saturday nights at 8:00 (which would be 7:00 where I am). You know I'm tuning in this coming Saturday!!

Darn! I just missed a 1981 show. Oh well, hopefully, they won't nix the early years like AT40 Flashback did.

This weekend's 80s show was the August 6, 1988 AT40 which, of course, was Casey's final show. I guess they'll be airing many of the landmark shows during the first year of the show. I wonder if that means they'll be running the Dead Dog show the weekend of September 15?
Sort of strange that they ran the show this weekend, seeing as it was closer to last weekend. Perhaps to make up for AT40 Flashback running it a week too early? (They played the show on July 28, 2001).
I sure hope whatever they do next week, they use a show never before heard on Flashback (although it was great to hear the first hour. Some nice, lost hits on that, including "It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man" by Rick Astley, "Sayin' Sorry (Don't Make It Right)" by Denise Lopez, "Here With Me" by REO Speedwagon, and "Missed Opportunity" by Hall & Oates. (Although it was sort of hard, listening to the love songs, as my gf and I had yet another tiff yesterday, but that's another story...)
My prediction for next week - 1984.

And AT40 70's and AT40 80's won't air episodes with AT40 Casey/Shadoe guest hosts (Where's Charlie Van Dyke when you need him?)
How many AT40 70's/80's episodes aired in Flashback/non-Flashback does XM own?
And about Casey's last AT40 from August 6, 1988: 1) Daryl Hall and John Oates, the guest hosts of the previous week of AT40, entered the AT40 chart with "Missed Oppotunities" that week; 2) "Sayin' Sorry Don't Make it Right" by Denise Lopez was the song on the last Casey Kasem hosted old AT40 that got snubbed from making the R&R CHR/Pop charts.

This week's show was Awesome! The Summer of 1987.. It was the year between 5th and 6th grade for me.. I loved hearing some of the lost favorites like Robbie Nevil's "Wot's It To Ya" (Is Fats Domino in that Video?), Mr. LL COOL J's "I Need Love", and Jellybean (with Elisa Fiorillo who had a solo hit a couple of years later with "On the Way up") doing "Who Found Who".. Starship's "It's Not Over till it's Over", odd how that song never gets played on JACK type stations, a good lost classic and a great follow up to "Nothing's Gonna Stop us Now"and George Michael's controversial "I Want Your Sex".. I remember some radio stations played a version called "I Want Your Love" which featured half of the side A version (on the 45) with the "I Want Your Love" line repeated over and over in place of the "I Want Your Sex" line, and the first part of side B of the 45 where George sings briefly "I Want Your Sex", which I found to be odd.. It's funny too how that song was so controversial back in 1987 and now there are rap songs being played on CHR radio that are FAR FAR more edgy lyrically..
And.. Madonna's other song from her other FLOP movie topping the chart.. I preferred the follow up, "Causing a Commotion" to "Who's that Girl?".. Maybe we'll be hearing another 1987 show in the next couple of months? Great show!

Fats Domino was in Robbie's video for "Wot's It To Ya". I remember an old guy in the clip playing the harmonica solo on the record but was that person really Fats Domino?

XM '70's show was better because it featured the debut of Ernie"s "Rubber Duckie". ;)
